Groups I Belong ToCouch Information
No couch currently available for surfing. Hey there, I am currently living in Portland Oregon and would love to get to know this city with you. I just got here and need to get out and see this town so if you stay we could do a lot of hanging out (you don't need to feel obliged to hang with me though). I am actually crashing with some friends but they are great people and probably wouldn't mind having you over.
The couch is set to yes but please understand that I need to approve any surfers with all my house mates before you show up so please give a few days advance notice if you want to stay.
Um, let's see, there are 5 guys living in the house, friends from college who moved out here together. We are friendly and accepting people with varied interests and lots of free time to show you around.
We are centrally located, less than a mile from downtown in the NE part of Portland. We have public transportation within a couple of blocks but walking downtown is perfectly doable. We are 2 blocks from the MAX, less than a block from a bus stop, and we live right on a major bike path.
Two of us smoke outside on the porch. It works for us so if you smoke it can work for you too. We are 420 friendly as well.
As for anything else, it will most likely just be a case by case kinda thing so email me and we'll work it out. Look forward to meeting you! Friends (168)

Personal DescriptionBrokenHow I Participate in CS2I started my participation in the groups. Then I started hosting people and chatting. I became an ambassador and began answering contact us questions and greeting new members. Then I started surfing couches and spreading the word of CS. When the opportunity arose, I attended the European Collective in Eisenstadt and discussed CS with lots of memebers. From there, I found my way to Montreal as the Collective there was coming to a close. I knew I wanted to really get involved so I left for New Zealand to be a part of the Collective happening there. Now I participate by rocking out with fellow surfers and hosts while spreading the word wherever I find myself. I love Couch Surfing!CouchSurfing ExperienceMy Couchsurfing experience began in December 2004 when I was surfing the web for info on how to aquire my German passport during my trip to Germany in 2006. Yeah, I was planning ahead. Anyway, I ran across a link to Couchsurfing in a travel forum and the rest is history until 2006 when i began Couchsurfing as a lifestyle. I have now surfed Couches in the US, Canada, England, France, Italy, Serbia, Bosnia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and New Zealand. I am not done and will have surfed a couch near you before I am finished.InterestsOne of my biggest interests is nature. It inspires me, helps me find my inner peace, and helps me get in touch with my spiritual side. I enjoy all types of outdoor activities: beach dwelling, flower smelling, photography, hiking, camping, canoes, animal watching (especially ants), fires on the river, barbeque's, star gazing (and the northern lights), sitting in my hammock, sailing, and well you get the idea. Some things I do on a regular basis include collecting trinkets I find, petting people's dogs, smoking cigarettes (any ideas on how to help me quit?), going to pubs, walking around, talking to people about my life's passions, traveling, reading (recently started again after a long break, recommendations readily accepted), and eating food. I am interested in meeting people of all kinds and having great conversations about life, Couchsurfing, environmental conservation, self help, thoughts, feelings, emotions, anything that people find important. PhilosophyIf it's free, take it; learn to find value in the worthless. Sandwiches are like a happy family, try to have one wherever you go.
All my life, I have heard that there is a fine line between fantasy and reality. People have always seen me as living on the fantasy side, never quite grounded in reality. I live to destroy that line, and I am starting by making my personal fantasies a reality. I continue to work at it every day. One day people will grow up hearing "Whatever you can imagine is your reality to create."
My newest philosophy involves breaking down all these imaginary walls we have created. It feels like most of us are going through life, scraping the surfaces of each other but never getting deep. We are all ignoring everyone around us, never really knowing anything about each other. Why? I believe we are all afraid. The only thing I know I can do to ease your fear is to trust you, to communicate with you and try my best to be real with you. Don't worry, soon you won't be able to respond with fear. I can't wait to meet you.Music, Movies, BooksMovies and Music are huge for me. I love them. I like books too. Books: Ishmael by Daniel Quinn changed my life, The Giver, I like Amis' work, and social affairs books, I also loved the Great Gatsby. New additions: On the Road, Into the Wild, and The Alchemist. Movies: Ghostbusters, Adam Sandler movies, The Big Lebowski, Boondock Saints, Fight Club, Snatch, The Beach, The Matrix(1 only), Indiana Jones, Say Anything Music: The Presidents of the United States of America, Velvet Revolver, Ben Folds, Audioslave, Cake, Led Zepplin, CCR, CSNY, Simon and Garfunkel, David Bowie, Queen, Sycamore Smith, Alice in Chains, Boston, Bluegrass, Classic Rock, Jazz, the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack(I used to listen to every night before bed, wierd I know)
I am always up for learning about new movies, music, and books so please feel free to share your favorites with me.Types of People I enjoyYOU I like to meet people with similar interests as myself, as well as meeting people who can expose me to new things. YOU I love spending time with imports because their views of the world, America, and americans is unique and interesting. YOU Pretty much anyone that wants to have a good time with me is worth meeting. YOU I would also like to meet people who would be interested in forming a beach community. I would love to get e-mails from anyone interested in experimenting with community. YOU I also enjoy the company of children. Their wonder is inspirational, their eagerness to learn is something I try to emulate constantly. Their lack of jade is a perspective we should all try to get into from time to time. Plus little kids are so fun and care free and when I spend time with them, I get to share that bliss. Did I remember to say YOU!!! I also enjoy meeting people who are willing to try and break down barriers and really get to know each other. Cut the bullshit and get to know the real people they are meeting. It is hard, but if we all keep trying, we can get there eventually. I also enjoy people who like to have long, meaningful discussions about the things they find important in life. I have a hard time talking about the weather (unless you know a lot about the weather) and other pleasantry exchanges. Let's get real.Teach, Learn, SharePassion: the sharing of knowledge and inspiration within the Couchsurfing community and outreach to our local geographic communities and to the world.
I believe that this is one of the most important aspects of CouchSurfing. To come together and share our experiences, teach each other what we know, increase collective consciousness and understanding, I mean what better way to spend our time.
Teach: I can teach you all sorts of things if you don't know much. I have a theory about teaching though, that isn't about providing people with information as much as it is about helping people ask the right questions. For example, I could tell you that a chameleon moves slowly and strangely in its unique chameleon style to look like it isn't actually alive. It is trying to resemble a branch or leaf moving in the wind. You know a useless fact you will probably forget. Instead, I would encourage someone to think it out and draw there own conclusion. After all, it isn't about the knowledge you gain as much as it is about how you gain it. I would rather know that Kiwis love to go tramping by tramping with some Kiwis, than having someone tell me or reading it in a book. I guess it is all just experiential learning.
Learn: I would really like to learn anything and everything. At the moment I am interested in learning some technical skills such as organic farming, auto repair, carpentry, welding, woodworking, blacksmithing, bone and wood carving, painting, pretty much anything I can do with my hands. I am especially interested in jewelry making and farming as I want to live by these trades at some point in my life. I would also love to learn to sail really well, fly fish, make a website, write a book, shit, anything you know, whatever you do, I would probably like to learn it. So, if you want to teach me, send me a message and I will surf with you and learn your trade or hobby. I also want to learn more about the way people interact, communicate, and generally get along with each other. I am fascinated with trust and with people opening up and letting people get close.
Share: Undoubtedly the most important of the three. Sharing what you learn is vital, the continuous spreading of knowledge. One day I would like to have a farm/school where people can come to learn just about anything in exchange for passing the knowledge along. I am also an advocate of shared learning, people learning by doing things together and sharing their experiences with each other. An example is getting a group of people together who want to paint and don't know how. They all try painting and one person might notice that a certain brush stroke creates a desired effect. They share this information with the group and now everyone knows it. As you learn, you teach...sharing.One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneIn New Orleans I watched a middle aged rock god jump on the bar, rip off his shirt and do the most amazingly perfect choreographed dance to Highway to Hell by ACDC. I was in such awe I didn't even think to take a picture. I just stood there with my jaw on the floor. It was great. I also saw a pig give birth at the state fair once. Aren't the little baby pink pigs the cutest things you've ever seen? I saw water leave a bottle and re-enter it with zero spillage. Pretty amazing Chloe. The northern lights are pretty amazing. Am I really supposed to just put one? I guess I should have something amazing that I have done. I laughed while eating Spaghettios once and they came out of my nose...you thought it hurt when it happened with Coke?Opinion on the CouchSurfing.com ProjectWith each new Couchsurfing experience my opinion only becomes more and more positive. When I first joined, I remember thinking how this opened doors for me to travel because money was a bit of an issue for me. I quickly grew up from that thinking however and began to see how I could use this website to meet real people in real cultures all over the world. Soon my perception of travel began to change. As I continue to grow in mindset and have more and more experiences with Couchsurfing, I get a little more inspired. Attending the Collectives in Austria and Montreal has increased my scope. We have such an amazing opportunity with this community, to grab the world and show it all the great things people are capable of. Couch Surfing has this amazing potential to affect the global community. People with kind hearts not only opening their homes and hearts, but leading by example the way to a more peaceful and beautiful planet full of understanding.Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Montenegro, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City LIVED: Germany, New Zealand, United States WANTS TO GO: Antarctica, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Egypt, Fiji, France, Germany, Greece, Haiti, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Madagascar, Malta, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, The Bahamas, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City References
From Sarah Dzieweczynski Taos, United States Sep 28 Positive Steve-o is great! Happy he's living in Taos.
From Daniel Klenicki Taos, United States Sep 27 Positive Steve, what can I say. You came to Taos with a job ahead of time. Clearly you are a man of intelligence and fortitude. It was great having you keep the couch company. Come by any time.
From Ulf Kleinings Cologne, Germany Jul 15 Positive The witty Viking
Steve's not at all as animal as the impression you might get from his pics. Ok – he likes booze. But he doesn't get wild from drinking and not even that sleepy ;-) He stayed up for 44 hours at the EU CSC!!! Apart from that he's a great guy to talk to. That's what he actually does when drinking (!) and with a great positive attitude, too. No wonder that for the whole 5 days I stayed at the Eisenstadt Collective I constantly saw him in one corner of the school building or surroundings or another talking to one or some - or listening to what they had to say. Mostly in the company of a bottle of wine and yet never failing to appear focused and genuinely interested in what the other(s) had to say. And he himself always gives you the impression that he means what he says - no matter if that's some silly nonsense just for the fun of the chat or some deeper thoughts which he keeps for the somewhat even more interesting talks you can have with him. AND he's one of the few guys who can always correct you without ever being a wise ass! That alone was a great help when he came with Sonja and me to prepare the scavenger hunt for the EU CSC and in addition to this his joyful and happy personality plus his often very cool sense of humor added very much to the fun I had doing that organizing hike for almost a whole day! I had hoped to see him again soon but so far it didn't work out. I have no doubt we'll meet again some time somewhere - and you should consider yourself lucky if you can do likewise!
From Jaco Roesch Malaga, Spain Apr 4 Positive I met Steve while we were sleeping in the same house. Steve is such an easy guy to get along with and is able to build rapport so quickly that I didnt even realize he was a couchsurfer for the first day or two I knew him- I thought he was just a friend of our host! We went bowling, drank beer, and talked about how to build fires in the woods when its raining among other topics. It was all thoroughly enjoyable, and I would reccomend Steve's company to anyone. He also has a really sweet beard. Have fun in Idaho, Steve!
From Nate Roter Lille, France Apr 3 Positive Steve surfed my couch in Eugene for a few early Spring days. He was awesome, independent, and a great addition to our house. Have fun man!
From Akeel Qureshi Eugene, United States Apr 2 Positive dude was awesome, I really enjoyed having him at our house. He hung out with my friends and was extremely insightful and intelligent. He's more than welcome to surf our couch again ! ! ! !
From Pete Kass Eugene, United States Apr 1 Positive Steve was a great guest to have. He was very respectful and easy-going. He was down for whatever was going on and had no problem entertaining himself when we were off doing other things. I really appreciated his insight and positive attitude, and he's welcome back on our couch any time. Have fun on the trails, Steve!
From REFRESHINGLYBLUE San Luis Obispo, United States Mar 25 Positive Steve was gracious enough to host us at the last minute in Portland. He and his roommates fed us the best pizza ever and brought us to a hip club for drinks and some interesting dancing. He was nothing but classy and cool and I really hope to see him again!
From LPJUNKIE San Luis Obispo, United States Mar 24 Positive Steve was more than welcoming to me and my friend for our one night in Portland. He was extremely hostpitable and friendly. His roommates were awesome; we all went out as a group to a bar the night we were in town. He's a great host, I genuinely hope to see him again.
From Hillary Murray Menlo Park, United States Feb 4 Positive I've lived with Hungry on two continents. In both situations I found that my respect and admiration for him grew daily. It's no overstatement in my mind to say: HS is one of the best humans I know. He's so playful (like a kid) so wise (like a grandfather) so Sweet (like Coffee Haagan daz ice cream) And so very awesome in all other ways that I've decided we should have kids together one day!!! But you know, in the right way. No red headed babies!! I adore this guy. And I miss his ciggie smokin' whisky drinkin' badassness daily.
From Miss. Moneypenny Phoenix, United States Nov 12, 2007 Positive It was so fabulous to finally meet Steve and a real honor to get to help celebrate his birthday. He is funny, low key, accepting, and kind. In my opinion, how much better can it get? He's also helpful to have around if you want to know what an "A line" dress style is - he's a man of many tallents, if you will. He is also willing to act as a coat, should you be cold and stuck in the rain. Who could ask for more?? I really look forward to our next visit my friend.
From miriam s*ometimes Vienna, Austria Oct 19, 2007 Positive steve, you are fantastically pathetic. who else could mention whiskey, sex, cigarettes and meatballs within one sentence?!
we spent nevertheless enough time w/ each other in the last months to create a friendship: who else, again, would run down a hill to provide girls & beers for me in the middle of the night / cut up his beard to share "male energy" and walk into the woods for hours to find a camping place with a turtle?!
...just don't sleep so much, there needs to be more of you!
From Maggie Rudick Sellersville, United States Sep 28, 2007 Positive STEVE IS WONDERFUL! Thank you for introducing me to couchsurfing- hopefully people will come visit me :)
Thank you, Steve!
From John Lubotsky Berkeley, United States Sep 19, 2007 Positive Steve is a gentle, generous, respectful guest, and someone I want in my house again and again. :)
From Princess Rachelina San Francisco, United States Sep 15, 2007 Positive although i have never seen steve hungry, this guy is growing on me. i hope his broken arm heals well:) HA! it's been a pleasure....surf my couch anytime, it'd be my pleasure! Steve carries such a peace about him...it makes you comfortable right away. i can see why he has so many fans around the globe:)
From Joshua Adair Austin, United States Sep 14, 2007 Positive More Savoury than sweet, HungrySteve will leave a salty taste of goodness in your mouth. Hes got a big big brain above that bright red goatee, and Im fully confident he will take over for St Francis and Dionysis as the Saint of Nature and Wine. Id definitely worship him. See you on Padre when we get the beach community going!
From SUPERYAMI Chelles, France Sep 1, 2007 Positive I really enjoyed couple of talks we had especially the one on how we should implement methods that would fit gifted young kid. i guess you definitely have already a good experience in this matter. hope to see you sometime in the future. the quicker the better!!
thanks for the dedication you showed and see you when you ll be back from the woods !!
From Serena Lepori Florence, Italy Jul 22, 2007 Positive I am sure, this sounds redundant, but I have to say it anyway. Steve is just a great person, very easy to talk to, warm, funny and kind-hearted. He's the kind that can make you feel like you've known him forever after a couple of minutes conversation. I hope nothing will change his spirit..
From Casey Fenton Homer, United States Jun 16, 2007 Positive Steve is one of my best new friends! He is so gentle. You can't help but feel really, really good when you spend quiet moments with him, mulling over important life events... or the world in general. He great at dropping some bomber insight... stuff that makes you ponder. Now if only I can show him how great being vegetarian is... lol... big hug Steve!
From QUICHE POIREAU Brighton, United Kingdom Jun 3, 2007 Positive He is the guy you will always find holding some meat when drinking a beer... or if he isn't it means he is planing to.
He is always surounded by people who have a blast and happy to be here (around him).
Why?
Not because of his pink nails, not because of the way he shapes his facial fur, not because of his WILD look.... nah just because being around him is an experience by itself!
ps: and if he is in your area, just contact him for some tips about where to find good food for the cheapest price... he would have good plans.
From VIAJEN London, United Kingdom May 27, 2007 Positive Being around Hungry Steve makes me happy! He has a gentle soul and a genuine talent for enjoying life to its fullest. Steve also knows how to have a rockin' good time - which is a great reason to let him crash on your couch - and I can't wait to share rum and hugs with him again!
From Hannah Vogel Dunedin, New Zealand May 17, 2007 Positive one of the greatest people on the planet! he has such a huge presence wherever he goes. i was lucky enough to have him in my life for the last few months during which he taught me so much about myself and living life. he also taught me the way of the pie...an unforgetable experience!
From EMMAWELLIE Bristol, United Kingdom May 17, 2007 Positive it was so much fun meeting hungry steve in his final days of travelling and i look forward to meeting again for a bit of burning man action!!!!!! hungry steve your great!!!! it was a pleasure meeting you and stuffing your giant vegetable ....... keep up the cornish pastie health regime you know its goodness!!!!!!!

From Tyson Edwards Auckland, New Zealand Apr 20, 2007 Positive It's like he says in his profile, you just can't sum him up in a couple of sentences. He's stayed with me twice now and was the first couch surfer I met. Wow. Talk about great first impressions, he's just SO HUNGRY.
From Christopher Ayling Edmonton, Canada Apr 16, 2007 Positive Steve is one surprise after another. He's beyond enjoyable to talk to and filled to the brim with incredebly usefull and interesting information. Everyone needs to meet this man!!!!!

From Jaycob Brown Nelson, New Zealand Apr 10, 2007 Positive Hungry Steve is one of those magical people whose gentle, giving nature make him very easy to have in your life, he is very funny and has a cool take on everything. Sharing even a day with him is amazing.
From Heather O'Brien San Francisco, United States Apr 1, 2007 Positive Wow, I just love Steve. He just has a good heart you can see beaming from a mile away. He's such a positive person, you can't help but grin when he's around. Honestly, he raises the smile factor in any room. Plus, I have to admit, I love a good adjective for a first name! I love the philosophy behind it too!
From Andrew Lai Grande Prairie, Canada Mar 29, 2007 Positive Oh Steve! It was too short this time round! I'll catch you later. This man lives up to his name, which is hungry Steve. He's not always hungry for food, but for life itself. Its is contagious and I'm loving it. See in the great white north.
From RoadStars Wellington, New Zealand Mar 29, 2007 Positive Hungry reminds us of who Lord Byron might have aspired to become were he utterly kind-hearted or- perhaps- Hunter Thompson were he a socialist/humanitarian.
Given to mad bouts of excess and alleged depravities only whispered about by people in dark alleys, he is the essense of kindness, consideration and compassion and welcome in our lives anytime and anywhere.
Steve was voted by his graduating class both as "Best Guy to be Shipwrecked with" and "Guy most likely to Eat Human Flesh".
From Bruno Boulandet Paris, France Mar 28, 2007 Positive I spent with this guy some very great moments, shared deep conversations, funniest moments, and a fantastic night staying awake just talking, laughing, drinking and waiving the sun. We share some ideals, some dreams, and I really enjoyed discover the soul behind the crazy face you first see ! Steeve is a mystery and an explanation, a deep and simple man, a mystical but accessible person. The more I know him, the more I realize there is more to know :)
From KEITHWANDERS Atlanta, United States Mar 5, 2007 Positive Here's my theory on Hungry: there was a celestial mixup and both Fonzi and Budda were reincarnated in the same body. No other way to explain it. Super cool and wise. Every time he gets that twinkle in his eye, I know something sweet is going to happen next. Awesome.
From Kristen W Auckland, New Zealand Mar 3, 2007 Positive steve is a wonderful person. he is warm and lots of fun. a big heart , full of stories, a great listener also, relaxed and a very accomplished partier. we wrestled on Xmas day - he won the first round.
From ANU* Helsinki, Finland Mar 3, 2007 Positive Steve is great to have around to find stuff. And fix stuff. And for breakfasts for champions. And doing collective things . Steviebear really has heart of gold and is awesome surfer & friend - I'm SO happy he's around the collectives, to make stuff happen that should happen. Can't wait to spend some more quality hangout time before the Kiwi collective ends.
From ShAi* Mumbai, India Mar 1, 2007 Positive Hungry Steve is quite like no one else I have met.....free, happy and absolutely adorable, I have found that he is an honest guy who will address and talk about things that others don't, has a fantastic ability to help folks out and taught me to use the grill!!:)He ALWAYS has a smile on his face and loves puppies(yay!) and has the ability to integrate himself into the local scene wherever he goes. He's an incredible guy, don't miss out on him.
From Phillip & Co Nicholas Dunedin, New Zealand Mar 1, 2007 Positive We had the utmost pleasure of housing Hungry and his merry band during orientation week. Great guy with a equally great beard, what more can I say?
From Jamie Small Dunedin, New Zealand Feb 28, 2007 Positive Hungry Steve is an awesome dude. He parties hard. I met him the first time when he stayed with my mates in 2006, and met him again in 2007 when he stayed with my mates again. He chained a freshman to a keg. Good times!

He has such a calm & relaxed way about him, & he has more to say in the silences in between words than most people I've met. I hope that Hungry is always in my life, because he's wonderful. We've got 2 hemispheres under our belt, & I hope we keep meeting up in the world. I know there's more HungrySteve to follow, & that couldn't make me happier. He's a true friend, & a gorgeous soul.

From Amylin Loglisci Avignon, France Dec 27, 2006 Positive Hungry Steve kicks ass... even though he's such a huge advocate of eating meat-- I'll let it slide, since he also likes a lot of my vegan food. Steve is a complex person, with a big heart, a good speaking voice, and a desire to see and learn new things. Very positive!
From Kris Wilson Picton, New Zealand Dec 23, 2006 Positive HungrySteve is like a perfectly cooked steak on a BBQ. Slightly burnt but with a real rich taste, that goes well with a cold beer. However he is tender on the inside with a soul that will melt your heart. (did I mention juicy) Seriously Steve, Whisky drinking, poker playing, cigarette smoking buddies forever!

From KAOXONI Cologne, Germany Nov 25, 2006 Positive Ode To Steve Vol 2.1 (beta). STEVE ROCKS!! Go meet that well-grounded dreamer and be inspired. He's larger than life! Steve is a full time appreciator of people, music, art, and so-called weird thoughts. He's good for air-conditioned museums as well as for any weather, including being fully soaken and half-blown off the bridge in a thunderstorm. ...did I say he's FUN whatever you do together? When he comes to you, show him an open door, and if you can, a river and a campfire. ________Hard facts: I hosted Steve in June 2006 for two nights, and at the days we had so much fun together that we just couldn't help meeting again for another three good times in June and July, then again at the CS Collective in Eisenstadt. Even though he's left Europe now, there's no doubt we'll stay in close contact, for Steve is a faithful soul of a rare calibre.
From Alastair Dunne Wellington, New Zealand Oct 16, 2006 Positive This guy's awesome. We had this random chat about random stuff -some really interesting stories. I wish he had stayed longer. He even drank the can of Tasman Bitter I found under the couch. If you know this beer, you'll understand that's impressive.
From Kate Gavin Nelson, New Zealand Oct 15, 2006 Positive Hungry Steve is a great guy. Two things that impress me about him are his easy-going happy nature and his fabulous orange beard which is currently going through a sort of Eyptian, King Tutt kind of phase.
