After a yearlong stay in California I moved back into my parent's house in 2000 expecting them to move out pretty soon after that with my sister's family moving into the lower floors of the house and leaving the loft with a newly built extra entrance for me. I'd been waiting for 5 years (…) before I had to move into a 30 sq.m. room in our cellar to make space for my sister family (including my little nephew Peter) when they moved into MY loft. That had been meant to be an interim solution but then had lasted for 1 year before our parents eventually moved out in September 2006. Since then my sister and her husband have been moving from the loft to the 1st floor while renovating the house bit by bit. In the meantime I've come to like my little basement room (especially for the very low rent ;-D) – even though apart from a sink there's no bathroom down there.
So I always have to enter my sister's family realm on the first floor to take a shower –
and so will you... Which means that we'll have to observe a few things. Like my sister's family privacy: my sister is, for example, not too keen on having complete strangers coming up with no advance warning and then perhaps peeping in their (usually open) sleeping room on their way to the shower while she's breastfeeding the little one on the bed there - even though none of us is really prudish ;-) And – of course - my nephew's sleeping hours!!!
Well, at least I have my own entrance door now, but unfortunately getting there is temporarily a bit of an adventure for one has to go around there house thru that garden corridor that we use as our own little rubbish dump while the (probably very, very long lasting) refurbishments are still going on :-D
I guess I have enough space for up to 4 people – we just put a few mattresses in the middle of the room and there's space for one more person on the bed-settee that I sleep on... But if you're used to (mixed) dorms in hostels you should be fine with that!
We have ("real" and air) mattresses for up to 4 people, plenty of blankets and duvets or eiderdowns and bed clothing and towels and everything.
We live in southern Cologne's "suburbia" - but it's only about 20 min. away from DOM/HBF=Hauptbahnhof (the cathedral / main station) by tram/underground.
Public transport is excellent; the nearest KVB (the Colognean Bus & tram/underground company) tram stop is "RODENKRICHEN" (line # 16 from Cologne Dom/HBF to Neumarkt, Sürth & Wesseling) at a walking distance of only 5 min. from my place.
If you don't stay too long I' will usually be able to take some time off to show you around - and will gladly do so...
Contact Method
VIA CouchSurfing!!!
or ICQ or MSN or Yahoo-Messenger
Calling (or texting) me needs some more advice ;-) :
You can call me AT ANY TIME! I'm one of the apparently very few people who know how to switch off the cell phone's ring-tone - and I actually do it all the time! So you can NEVER bother me - no matter what time you call!!!
When it is switched on then I almost always have my headset earphones in so that I can hardly miss a call ;-) Yet sometimes I might be somewhere where it's just too noisy to talk on the phone (party, Carnival, swinger club, Oktoberfest...) but then on such occasions I usually switch off my voicemail beforehand - so that you can let it ring for quite some time. Do that to make sure I realize somebody is trying to call me!!! And then - when it's indeed too noisy to speak - we simply hang up and I'll wait for your text message to then continue to communicate this way!
Otherwise I usually have my voicemail switched on (except for when I'm abroad where roaming fees can kill you!) - so you can use that, too.
However: when my voicemail answers your call immediately then I'm either temporarily not getting a signal or you called my ''Home Zone'' number when I'm actually not in my ''Home Zone'':
I don't have a landline any more but only a mobile phone! Plus what my provider calls the ''HomeZone Option''. With that I can call at landline rates when I'm in my ''HomeZone'' (up to 2km around my home address!) and receive calls on a landline number, too, which FOR YOU IS MUCH CHEAPER TO CALL than my mobile number!
SO ALWAYS CALL MY LANDLINE NUMBER FIRST:
+ 49 - 221 - 9995628 (same when you're in Germany!). Then if my voicemail answers immediately you hang up at once and only then try my mobile number:
+ 49 - 179 - 1091238 (same within Germany!): If it's the voicemail again then either use that or text me on that same mobile number (no SMS to the landline number possible!).
DO NOT send me an Email since it happens very often that emails - especially from people whose email address I don't now (yet) - get stuck in my spam filter!
COUCHSURFING - mails ALWAYS get through, though!

Opinion on the CouchSurfing.com ProjectAfter all my always very good experiences so far I'm now totally convinced that this thing cannot be misused by assholes - thanks to all these ingenious features like the verification thing, the references and the interconnection between everybody through the friends list and the "How Do I Know..."-feature and so on!!! I truly believe that a thing like this will mainly or perhaps almost only be used by really interesting and cool people who are always up for meeting people. I hope to have enough time and opportunity to host people at my place as often as possible and can use CouchSurfing for my own trips sometimes, too.Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Austria, Bahamas, Mexico LIVED: United States References
From Sebastian Weidemann Nettetal, Germany Dec 1 Positive Ulf is always mood for partying. It´s characteristic for cologne. But we don´t enought time for talk more about your person and some things CS. But thr next meeting is coming...
From Irena Tovarloza Sesvetski Kraljevec, Croatia Nov 26 Positive What word do I have for Ulf??!
I know that he doesn't write references back, but never mind that! I had so much fun with him...just when you mention one subject he can make fun out of it! And I couldn't figure out on what he doesn't reply? :)
If you are open for having eccentric and 'not to think what others think' fun..stay with him...your belly muscles will develop from laughter because of him!
From Thomas Harringer Salzburg, Austria Nov 25 Positive met him at caspars place in berlin! great guy who always seems to have some sausages and mustard in his pocket! it was absolutely funny to be with him! he's the kind of person that i could listen to for hours!
From Kristin Schuster Montreal, Canada Nov 20 Positive Ulf is a character to say the very least. A lot of people don't get his sense of hunour, but I think he is absolutely hilarious. He is also incredibly helpful and really made my travels easier. I also had the pleasure of seeing him naked, although I think I'm joining the ranks of a few hundred people
From Romain Bach Geneva, Switzerland Nov 15 Positive Great CS experience, will never forget Aqualand and the hot pouring! Nice Mongolian BBQ too^^.
From Hannah Young Portchester, United Kingdom Nov 14 Although we didnt actually manage to stay with Ulf (due to Centurion ;))it was great meeting up and seeing Cologne with him.He is a great host and would definatly love to see him again next time we're in Cologne!
From Edyta Niemyjska Legnica, Poland Nov 14 Positive Very spontaneous meeting. Very positive.
Ulf came to my place with some people he hosted and we had a little WOK party.
He is really really nice person, you can't be bored with him, he has too much energy and you have this feeling of trust that he wont set your room in fire!
Ulf, thanks for great evening!
From Joca Faria Leiria, Portugal Oct 21 Positive Opinionated, self confident, strong minded, assertive... and a lot of other adjectives that makes him a person to be loved or hated in the first 10 min.
I've loved him!!
Thanks for a great experience.
From Paweł Nosal Vienna, Austria Oct 20 Positive Ulf my master from Germany. He likes (taking) scandalous pictures (=sp), loves long discussions (about sp) enjoys provoking and shocking others (with sp) but beside all that: he is one of the coolest couchsurfers ever! Drink in his presence and 'enjoy' his presence ;-)
From Aislinn McCarry Vienna, Austria Oct 20 Positive Ulf's a great guy. Always up for a good time and definitely always ready to party. He's super open minded and really interesting to chat with. Above all, he has great taste in musicals =)
I always enjoy taking part in shenanigans with him while he's visiting Vienna. Specifically, excursions involving the neu Donau and his ability to set up a great picture. Hope to see him back in Vienna soon!
From Dietmar Eisenhammer Wiesbaden, Germany Oct 19 Positive To get in touch with Ulf is a big experience. He is the King of CS in the world. I still can learn so many things from him. Therefore I am happy I met you. The next time I am in your "Sauna Meeting". I am sure. Get the best.
From Gerald Binder Linz, Austria Oct 13 Positive Very experienced CouchSurfer with heaps of good recommendations and tips regarding couchsurfing. Very helpful!
From Vincent Cournoyer Whitehorse, Canada Oct 1 Positive Ulf is one of the most special person i met haha...He suprised me every minute of this trip, after passing a week with him there is no way you can be shy or that you will not change a bit. From Nathan Selikoff Orlando, United States Jul 16 Positive We had a fantastic time with Ulf and other Koln CS friends... he made us feel very welcome. We hope to see him again sometime.
From Elisa Partti Mikkeli, Finland Jul 14 Positive All I can say is that I truly appreciate people with a strong and witty sense of humour. Ulf is one of those people. Hope to meet him again some day :)
From Rafael Nussbaum Bern, Switzerland Jul 11 Positive His saunas, jokes, strong likes for dessert,...
legendary
*up-date*
He's really refreshing, as seen in Vienna, but blame me or him, he stays a mystery for me. Peraps here agian, would need a long undisturbed talk to REALLY get to know each other, but I think that's in both our genes.
As it concerns hosting, I think he will be an excellent host/guest, strong and sometimes hard to get sense of humour, but great anyway.
I know you'll hate me for not only putting negative things here, but you'll have to live with it :-D
From Wicher Visser Zurich, Switzerland Jul 10 Positive *** complete ref will follow soon ***
Extremely outgoing guy, full of life and fun, shares many interesting stories and full of facts of life, make sure you have energy to survive him ;)
From Sanni Suominen Vaasa, Finland Jul 10 Positive ulf surfed my couch, literally, with two of his friends and i do have to admit that i enjoy his company. ulf is opinionated and have plenty of stories to tell, especially those below the waist ones, spiced up with ulf's humour. it is guaranteed that you won't have a dull moment with him! oh, and i promise to practise my table soccer skills!
From RUDA^ Katowice, Poland Jul 10 Positive We met at Paella Party 2008. Ulf was my first tent-host. He let me sleep in one of his great and comfy tents!
Thank you one again. You saved me from the rain!
From Zeng Annie Shenzhen, China Jul 7 I am Annie from China and want to be a friends of you.
From SERGIOLX Düsseldorf, Germany Jul 6 Positive I still have to update this refference!
We had already met in some euromeetings, but still I have to find better words to describe him!
From Igor Bilik Bratislava, Slovakia Jul 5 Positive First of all I have to say that CS is not a dating site and Ulf doesn't look like German, second this reference is not for him but for you guys for other members :) and I'd like to tell you that to do not meet Ulf, if you have a chance, is something like to go to Paris and skip Eiffel Tower, his sence of humour is from time to time kind of dangerous but I really like his straight and promt way how he is joking. He was the first global ambassador who I met (in addition with super c... how he introduces himself) and I'm glad for a fun he brought to our great meeting in Finland.
From Anna-Mari Almila Rovaniemi, Finland Jun 30 Positive It's very likely you'll hear something about Ulf before you'll meet him, that's what happened (also) in my case. I wouldn't actually have recognised him by the description so I just forgot what other people said. :D Here's what I say: Wonderfully (or overly) caretaking, with sometimes dangerous (!) sense of humour (which I enjoy enormously!), impatient, restless at times, straightforward, honest, tactless, very funny, clever and whatever. And now you can just forget this list, go and meet him and make your own opinion. You can rest assured that Ulf will have opinions and he'll make them plain and open though with lengthy explanations! If you are in hurry, don't ask him anything, he's totally unable to answer a question shortly, he'll talk for around half an hour and in the end print you some additional information! And triple-check if you actually understood everything he said. Oh, and if you spend more time with him than, say, 3 days and tell it to someone, they'll think you're crazy
From Yury Kudravzev Hannover, Germany Jun 30 Positive I met MrUlf by city walking trip with Markku in Tampere. It was very interesting to see German speaking in Finland and walking above 15 km. through city squares, parks, bridges, mountains and likes. We had a nice visit of the famous 100-years old sauna.
From PUPPAX Bangalore, India Jun 26 Positive Ulf is definitely one of the most enterprising guys I met during my EuroTrip. He had meticulously planned the X-mas markt crawl at Koln which I joined in the evening which became my inaugural CS experience and boy! was it great! After what was an eventful and tiring day, we ended up pumping an air-bed(which he pulled out of his magic box) for nearly an hour which wud become my bed for the night. Thanks mate for all the advice and help in planning my trip. cheers!
From Tulio Mateo Kigali, Rwanda Jun 25 Positive I met Ulf at the CS meeting in Helsinki and I won't forget his magic performance bringing out wrustels from who-knows-where.
He also tried to turn me into a finnish TV star but I humbly refused.
** Cologne?? where is that? :-) **
From Ryan Phelps Klingenberg am Main, Germany Jun 16 Positive I only stayed a short time, but in that time he introduced me to his local Couch surfing crowd and gave me a nice comfy matress to sleep on.
He has been everywhere and I am jealous.
From Ella Che Dongguan, China Jun 16 Positive This is first time i met ULF from CS. I don't really know him .
From Vinny Ialenti Johnson City, United States Jun 8 Positive this man not only has a comfortable mattress, but also knows more about american politics than most all americans. he showed us around, brought us to a barbecue in bonn, and showed us kolsch drinking etiquette. good time!
From Reza Kahlaee Mashhad, Iran May 27 Positive Cs should be very proud to have such members in it, in the BBC 2008, I saw that Ulf really cares for every detail of the camp and cares for every one, he is really responsible and helps you as much as he could,I am also happy that I met him and happy having such friends.
wish you the best
cheers
Reza (Hark)
From Fabian Dreher Basel, Switzerland May 20 Positive Well, Ulf is a very outgoing and open-minded person which i enjoyed a lot talking to and laughing with! Yes, he's sometimes a little bit offensive but never means it and don't take him too seriously...hope to meet again soon!
From LEOPOLDR Bamberg, Germany May 19 Positive We met at the Berlin Beach Camp 2008. Ulf is great, but the question remains - your Sauna there or my Sauna here? :)
From Til V. Aachen, Germany May 18 Positive very cool host! couchsurfing-expert =)
From Frank Verhart Maastricht, Netherlands May 13 Positive Ulf is a great organisor, and a CS-personality in Cologne, where his roots are as well. I would especially like to mention the days and evenings he organises in the Arche, a perfect location to let CS-people meet eachother, to talk or play some games, and for hosting. The Arche is especially a great input to CS in my view. So far the most open CS-man in Cologne!!! Cheers! Stayed in The Arche Carnaval 2008, somewhere in Spring 2008 and stayed at his place in August 2008, as an emergency couch!!
From Martin Junkermann Berlin, Germany May 13 Positive We meet us by many meets in Cologne Karneval openenig meet 2007 and 2008 and Karneval 2008 Christmas meeting 2007 Berlin Beach Camp 2008 and Couchsurfing Paella 2008 ..... , were are sleeping by the Berlin Beach camp in the same street:-)))
HE IS VERY NICE
See You
From Christine Rasmussen Herning, Denmark May 13 Positive Ulf is a great organiser and really knows how to welcome a new person in the group!
From ASHLEY SF Baltimore, United States May 12 Positive I had heard a lot about Ulf from Anick and Caspar and I had really high expectations for how awesome he would be. He definitely was just as I thought he would be and he is a real cool guy. He is extremely into couchsurfing and has a great attitude about it. He seems like a total free spirit and I really admire that. I even forgive him for telling me I look like a guy! See you at the Paella!
From Greg Kemerer Park Ridge, United States May 12 Positive Ulf, already overbooked for spaces in his tents for the BBC2008 - gave me a place to sleep at night. Of course it wasn't just ANY place, but the COOLEST place at the BBC! Ulf even ordered flags from the places where each "tent surfer" was from to hang above the tents. We didn't hang out too much, but from what I saw Ulf is a great member of the Couch Surfing community and definitely brought great energy to the camp. Thanks again Ulf!
From Denis Mysenko Mumbai, India Apr 8 Positive Wonderful CS experience! Ulf has not only provided me with a warm hospitality at his house, but also took me to a great sauna! He is very intelligent and hence very interesting to talk to - just choose any topic. Ulf is very dedicated to CS! Danke!
From Leighton Smith Salisbury, United States Apr 1 Positive I got to meet Ulf at Las Fallas in Valencia, Spain. Great guy to pass time with. He loves snacks as much as I do.
And when we went to the beach, he was the only guy who went swimming. It was like 8:00 at night and very, very cold. So that's impressive.
I hope we meet again.
From Zubin Thomas Easton, United States Mar 31 Positive My friend Sam and I stayed with Ulf for a few nights and had a great time. He is very knowledgable, and gave us a wonderful tour of the cathedral. He also really helped us out by letting us stay with him on short notice, and finding us our next host. I hope our paths cross again.
From Rosy Chacon Cologne, Germany Mar 25 Positive Ulf, till now Ive noticed I ve never left a comment on you.
What can I say about Ulf that nobody else has said before?
He is the MOST resourceful guy ever.
Really! he will be there in case you're stranded somewhere in cologne.
and he can def. party! =D
From Sam Bodkin Newton, United States Mar 12 Positive My best friend Zubin and I were lucky enough to get in touch with Ulf and stay for a couple of nights with him at extremely short notice. He really came through for us when we needed him. And he is a fantastic host. He is incredibly hospitable, and you couldn't find someone who knew their city better. If you are willing to climb the one million stairs to the top of the cathedral in Cologne with him, he can tell you about every building you see. I hope to stay with him again some day.
From NIGHTFELL Melbourne, Australia Mar 4 Positive My time in Cologne was greatly enhanced thanks to Ulf, who I saw 3 days out of 3, as I enjoyed his biting humour, witticisms, great knowledge of Cologne and buffee resteraunts. He took time to show me and some other CSs around the cathedral, organised a fantastic brunch and met up with me on my last night to take a whole group of us to a bar. conversing with Ulf was both enlightning and entertaining, and I hope at some point we will run into each other again.
From SKYEHIKER Webster Groves, United States Feb 20 Positive Ulf was an AWESOME host on my recent visit to Bonn & Cologne. While I didn't surf at his place, he was a great host in that he always led us to GREAT places to drink, GREAT places to eat, and just great places to hang out & enjoy really good conversations. He also throws in really cool "tour guide" stuff about his town as well. He did a lot to make contact & to keep in touch throughout our visit, so we'd always know what's on. If you're in Bonn and/or Cologne, and if he's there too, you'd be amiss to miss a beer with him.
From Cuyx Sende Tongeren, Belgium Feb 15 Positive what can possibly be added to ulfs résumé..
From Carlos Oliveira Campinas, Brazil Feb 14 Positive Ulf is a great Guy. He just thought about everything.
He let more than 40 people stayed in Archer. And It was the best first experience that I could have with couchsurfing.
From Tuula Närkki Kylmakoski, Finland Feb 13 Positive I admire Ulf's energy! He's got this positive curiosity and interest to everything. It can be a workshop with children, the werbs for scratching in different languages... just anything! You can always count on him to make conversation. And if you ever participate in a competition (like CS Olympics), make sure Ulf is in your team! :)
