Personal DescriptionSee my website ( www.fliptophead.com ) for the whole nine yards.
Since March '04 I've been on the go, be it on my motorcycle, truck, of with my thumb, with the goal of sleeping on at least one couch of a stranger in every state in the USA... yet somehow I ended up in Montreal for three months, New Zealand for four months, Holland for a while, and then blissfully (and quite loosely) based in the SF Bay area. Hmm...
Anyway, I also bring along my own couch! I'm dragging Lucy, the wee inflatable Red Couch, all over the country, er, the world to get photographs of her in every state (and then some).
I'm almost always on the go. I like new places and new things. It's a big world and I'd like to live in a little bit of all of it, even if just for a while in most of it. I absolutely love traveling and plan to keep on going for a long, long time. More than seeing new places I love meeting new people and experiencing a new perspective at least every day when possible.CouchSurfing ExperienceOver these last 4+ years I've been on someone else's couch almost every night. I've gotten to know so many amazing people from Hawaii to Prague to New Zealand to Amsterdam. I've shot skeet in the backwoods of Georgia and attended a royal wedding of a prince in Denmark - all because of the people I met through this site. Some of my best friendships and connections have sprung up as a result of CouchSurfing. Really, I'm just getting started...InterestsI'm seeing the world while meeting as many new people as possible. I also bike (motorcycle and mountain bike), bang on my drums, scuba, and hitchhike in foreign countries. Also: worldwide travel, finding the apex of life's moments, new connections, a fine whiskey or scotch and tequila-tonics, reconnects with old friends, greener pastures, what's around that corner?, oceans, photography, people that are smarter than me, delicious beer, driving fast, old motorcycles that reek of gasoline (mine is a '81 Silverwing), cross-country hitchhiking, strong independent women who also like being taken care of now and then, great wine coupled with tantalizing conversation, finding the full beauty of "right now", discovering more of what i don't know or understand, erotica, surrealism, sensuality, fresh perspectives, inflatable couches, couch lovers, small towns, strong communities, New Zealand, non-traditional relationships, open roads, one-on-one, group dynamics, siestas and fiestas, great storytellers, people waving their freak flags, the great unknown, vagabonds, seekers, intimacy, nostalgia, hope, open minds, celebration, intoxication, inspiration, motivation, and, of course, adventure!Philosophy"If we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One's destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things." -Henry Miller
"You only live once, and the way I live, once is enough." -Frank Sinatra
Here's another: "Make every day your masterpiece." I find little reason to live wholly for tomorrow when today is right here. If today can't count to the fullest then what's the point with worrying about the next one? I'm a big fan of living in the moment and learning more about how to "be here now."
The 9-5 "American dream" just isn't for me. I like to enjoy my life as much as I can and make my own path. I love just seeing as much of the world as possible while meeting the good people who inhabit it. Also by Miller, "I have no money, no resources, no hopes. I am the happiest man alive."Music, Movies, BooksI usually buy way more books than I finish. A Chinese proverb says "it's better to travel 1,000 miles than read 1,000 books." That being said I read a lot of travel-related books (Tim Cahill, Bill Bryson) and dig Alex Garland and Tom Robbins among others. I buy books MUCH faster than I read them. Most of them have a bookmark somewhere near the halfway point and I'm usually reading four or five at a time. Current favorite book: Jitterbug Perfume. I read that book at JUST the right time (thanks to N. in Kentucky). I love maps and planning new adventures, even if only in my head. Whenever I can I bang on my drums or any other set that's handy I'm a happy boy. I love discovering new music and trading mix CDs with strangers and friends. I've been in a few bands and would love to get involved in another one day, hopefully much sooner than later. Pearl Jam, Pulp Fiction, Six Feet Under, Deadwood - all brilliant.Types of People I enjoyI'm a student in the School of Life and the people of the world are my teachers. I enjoy how all types of people continue to teach and inspire me.Teach, Learn, ShareI want people to understand that there IS an alternative to the consumer-driven lifestyle most of us (Americans, particularly) are conditioned and expected to settle into and be smothered by. Most people don't realize how easy and FREEING it is to take off and blaze your own trail. My "job" now is to teach and inspire others how to step over that line and find your way, all along while i'm finding my own. I'm on the hunt for a method of the self-sustainable perpetual road trip, or at the very least a lifestyle that affords the same sense of extraordinary adventure and intrigue that i've quickly grown accustomed to and know I don't have to settle for anything less. I'm getting better and better at it as I keep on truckin' and I love to share the tips I've picked up along the way. You can learn probably a lot already on my website but many more juicy tidbits are on the way. Keep checking back - this is only the beginning. One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneI've been invited to (and attended) a 50th anniversary party in Denmark with people I just met, spent Christmas with new friends from all around the globe in the Australian outback, hitchhiked thousands of miles on 3 continents, and filled in as a last minute sound board engineer at a concert in France (also for someone i had just met). Every day is truly an adventure.Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Holy See (Vatican City), Italy, Jamaica, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States LIVED: Canada, United States WANTS TO GO: Antarctica, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Bodies of water, Brazil, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, El Salvador, Fiji, Gaza Strip, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, The Bahamas, Uruguay, Venezuela References
From Nick Racz Las Vegas, United States Aug 26 Positive Jim has an infectious passion for life. He is a warm and caring guy that exudes calm and creates a peaceful vibe. From T.J. Kelly Kamloops, Canada Aug 16 Positive Had a blast with Jim at the Alaska Collective. Very much appreciated the tour of Homer on the first night. From Damon Burden Buffalo, United States Aug 8 Positive Me and Jim had an experience on a boat unlike no other while fishing out of Homer Alaska, I could try to explain accept you'd think I was crazy.

From Bill Campbell Anchorage, United States Jun 8 Positive Jim is a thoughtful fellow who is easy to spend time with.
From John Lubotsky Berkeley, United States May 25 Positive The tremendous warmth of Jim's heart is matched by tempered and conscious intention, even amidst the debauchery. I'm lucky to call him a friend.
From Brian Hild Anchorage, United States May 21 Positive Great guy we had tons of fun when crashed at my place. great guy to know.
From ASHTANGAYOSSI New York, United States May 11 Positive Mr. Stone: THE global nomad of CouchSurfing. This man surfs perpetually and professionally. Always on the move, gathering more experiences, giving him a seasoned perspective and more stories than you can shake a stick at... plus the man can do a mean Elvis impression with so much sincerity it's as close to the real deal as possible.
From Diana Neuman Sacramento, United States May 9 Positive Leaves me wanting to hang out with him more!
From Katrina Light Portland, United States Apr 24 Positive Jim is fucking awesome. He will double you on a bike, drink on any rooftop, and make you think long and hard right before he makes you squeal with laughter. J. Stone is an all around super hero.
From KNULP Genova, Italy Apr 23 Positive We shared some gorgeous days at collective in Pai
From Katrin Mager Dresden, Germany Apr 22 Positive I'm happy you had some time for me! Pity that we didn't really got to know each other. But it definetly was a very good first meeting. See you again somewhere!
From DIAMONDINLONDON Harrow, United Kingdom Apr 20 Positive Jim was my very first point of contact with the Thai collective. After chatting to him on the phone before going to Thailand I knew he'd be an awesome person to hang with and once I got there was more then proven right. A definite modern day gentleman who was always looking out for the well being of others.
From LAURA GAMSE Arlington, United States Apr 17 Positive Jim saved my life from the evil flying monkeys who tried to plant drugs on me and throw me off the cliffs of Thailand. And that ain't no small endeavor. It is an utter travesty that the scale here stops at Extremely Positive. If it went a few notches higher, I would choose the flashing and blinking one that has Mr. T jump out of the screen, grab you by the collar and say "I pity the fool who don't know Jim Stone!" If you don't, get ON it.
From May Sanguannuan Bangkok, Thailand Apr 17 Positive Despite the fact that I didnt see Jim when he was in BKK, to meet him in one of my fav town, SF, is one of the memorable things for me for my B-day trip:)Jim is so hugable and really, i mean, really kind!!I'm so glad I finally met the guy and yet, cook for him and our friends before I left SF!!Eventhough I didnt see the famous Pooh costume, his hugs are still warm and make me feel like i am hugging the Pooh Bear:)
Jim,Dear..U r gonna have to come back here and do the street food exploring with me one day!!BKK, awaits for ya:)
From Susan Livingston Abingdon, United States Apr 15 Positive Here is a guy like me - co-creating the world of the future in the present. It is a comfort to this tribal elder that such people in the next generation are ready to take up the torch and spread the light.
I'm grateful to Jim for vouching for me. I continue to be amazed and delighted by the central place he occupies in my CS network!
From Gabriel Stempinski San Francisco, United States Apr 12 Positive Jim is a party looking for a place to happen.
-nuff said ;)
From AMYPRIS San Francisco, United States Apr 10 Positive Jim caught a ride up to Chico with me and got to cram into the back seat. This man has a mind blowing collection of nail polish. Me likey.
From Ryan Boyle Bangkok, Thailand Apr 8 Positive Mr. Stone the dude with the cool pants randomly showed up to a party I hosted in San Fran. The dude can party all night, yet keeps chilled cool calm vibe with him throughout the night. Champagne and Vodka in Alaska sometime this year my friend (Well just Vodka for me!)
From MANDIE M Canowindra, Australia Apr 7 Positive I’m not sure there is much more I can add here that can further convince you that Jim is most definitely someone you want to meet in your lifetime, but I’ll give it a good try! This guy is fun personified – he is someone who will make the effort to connect with those around him and he spreads the CS spirit around the globe with ease. My time at the Thai Collective wouldn’t have been the same without him – he inspired me to work harder, challenged me to party harder and just generally brightened up each day with his antics and stories. Love ya Jim!
From LITERARYGYPSY Seoul, South Korea Apr 4 Positive Who wouldn't want to be a friend of the Red Couch Guy?--who's looking pretty Thai these days....I'd first had interaction with Jim when I asked to be considered for a leadership position and to join the Thai Collective, and he invited me to a related working group. As my own work ultimately precluded my becoming a team coordinator or attending the Collective, I was thrilled to find that Jim would be passing through Seoul as he Collective-hopped (from Thailand to Alaska--now, that's a switch!), and that I'd have another chance to meet him. Over lunch we had fabulous conversation about both CS and Korea, and I was pleasantly surprised to meet Tech Jeff as well! Jim, I hope our paths cross again before long, and that we get to know one another much better. Best of everything to you!
From Margaret Zachry Pine Mountain, United States Apr 2 Positive Made me want another surfer soon! It was great having Jim around, so easy and fun. Oddly, when Jim was around I talked a little more and stayed up a little later. Surfing is about the people as much as the places. He is so personable if he comes this way again, my friends have alrady invited him to stay with them...over my dead body.
From Gaye Gunay Bodrum, Turkey Apr 1 Positive Full of energy and joy!!! we spend one night all together. it was one of the best party and dance since i m in Thailand
From Virginia Burg Neusiedl am See, Austria Mar 25 Jimis a very concentrated person with a lot of clear energies.
From Andrew Otto Homer, United States Mar 22 Positive Jim is smiley and loves the Jameson. He has introduced me to the wonders of meat on a stick, and has been gracious enough to share his ant covered cookies.
From Charish Badzinski La Crosse, United States Mar 5 Positive Jim is dependable, hard-working, and tremendous fun to spend time with! I can't imagine what the Thai Collective would have been like without him--he is such an integral part of the richness of that experience for me, it's nearly impossible to separate. I trust Jim whole-heartedly, and I anxiously await the day he sleeps on my couch in Wisconsin!
From Liv Allermand Århus, Denmark Mar 1 Positive I was very impressed with Jim's languege skills. He actually helped me with my danish. Thank you Jim!
From Benjamin Ranta Ishpeming, United States Feb 28 Positive I met Jim by happenstance when he drove past me looking for another CouchSurfer at the bus stop in Pai, Thailand. This guy has a great outlook on life and I ardently subscribe to his belief in long, open-ended travel. He is an ideal guest, travel companion, friend, you-name-it. I'd vouch for Jim ten times over. Thanks again for the lift Jim!
From Johnny Colden Nordland, United States Feb 22 Positive From what I know of Jim, I like of Jim. At the same time, I admit what I know of Jim isn’t much. One thing I can say is he looks dead sexy to me in his sombrero picture on the CS Thailand collective wall. Another thing I can say is I never heard him complain, even during the most deadly of Thailand-Tummy sickness. I hope we meet again Jim ;)
From Nilufar and Mathew Smith San Francisco, United States Feb 19 Positive Jim was a great person to meet. Even though he was a bit ill at the time we met, he always had a smile on his face and was very positive! - That says a lot! :D
Thank you Jim for your great hospitality. You are always welcome on our couch!
From ROKKEN247 Austin, United States Feb 3 Positive I am 99.9% sure that I wrote Jim a reference back when he stayed with me in 2005, so perhaps it disappeared in the crash of CS version 1. Anyhoo, while he may not need any more references as far as quantity goes, I want to write another now, as this guy was my first couch surfer. His visit was such great fun, and he was such a friendly and interesting person, that I thank him for setting the tone for all of my future CS encounters.
From Lisa Sampson Edinburgh, United Kingdom Jan 24 Positive Great energy, great to talk to. You will be delighted if you come across Jim in your travels.
From Elena Peters Cologne, Germany Jan 23 Positive Jim rocks my world! That guy has a heart as big as a mountain and sex appeal enough to make any camera lense crack :o)
He's one of a kind, a true original.
From Paul Wouters Rotterdam, Netherlands Jan 20 Positive Jim is part of the tech team. We had some nice conversations. I'm sure I'll see him again.
From Matt whatley San Francisco, United States Jan 20 Positive Jim is a quality individual.
From Sierra Stults Durham, United States Dec 28, 2007 Positive Lunch with Jim included good company and good food... an all-around successful get-together.
From SOLSTICEBABY Chico, United States Dec 27, 2007 Positive Jim's become someone I'm fond of seeing appear and reappear in and around my life. A fun, easygoing, surprising person, he's also a big help in Cs V.V. stuff as well.
From Pamela Pressley Dallas, United States Dec 27, 2007 Positive Jim's a great guy...interesting conversation, a great listener and fun to be around...and he is the Dallas moderator!!!
From Camren Davis Boulder, United States Dec 24, 2007 Positive Jim is the best. you know he is. you know it.
From Iain Lundberg Brisbane, Australia Dec 22, 2007 Positive Jim stayed at my place for one night..
From Rob Archangel Brooklyn, United States Dec 17, 2007 Positive Jim was great company when we met in Roanoke. After being encouraged to contact him, a fellow passer-through of Roanoke, he called me and we hung out for the night, along with other folks. After everyone else had taken off, he shuttled me around to show me the town, and though he had an early morning obligation, hung out with me till midnight until I caught my departing bus. Great guy!
From Diederik en Esther de Vries Rotterdam, Netherlands Dec 12, 2007 Positive Jim is an very easygoing guy. We had a lot of laughter at Walters place, while running the CSC.
Needless to say: Jim is one of the top-active persons in CS, which is highly appreciated. You're always welcome in Rotterdam!
From Eric Forsman Saint Louis, United States Dec 12, 2007 Positive The way Jim carries himself makes an impression on everyone he comes near. I enjoyed all the times I speant with him, telling stories, sharing meals, and loving life. Jim lives his life and loves every seccond of it. Oh, and he is the conundrum master.
From Ivan Phillips London, United Kingdom Dec 6, 2007 Positive Although Jim didnt stay with my in Vegas (I didnt read my email in time to say yes to him) - I invited him out to moon nightclub that night, to experience the full on ' vegas experience'.
Jim is a VERY cool guy - I guess im not the first person to say this though. He was the one who told me about burning man. Although i had heard of it, i had never really thought of going to it - however jim convinced me that i should go, and i went - and i LOVED it. I would NOT have gone if I hadnt of met Jim, so I am very thankful that i met him.
From Walter Heck Homer, United States Dec 4, 2007 Positive Jim Stone, he surfed my apartment during the RCSC there. We had some good nights out and soem nice talks. Jim is a solid guy with a heart of gold! I admire people who try to pick up skills (programming in particular here) and give their best to get good at it! Without him CS wouldn't be what it is today!
From TeDeVan Kurzweil New York, United States Dec 4, 2007 Positive We had an old fashion pow wow. He is one of the OG's of couchsurfing. There are a few people on this site everyone knows as speaks well of and Jim Stone is truly one of couchsurfing's glitterati.
From CHOCOLATE ECLAIR Edinburgh, United Kingdom Dec 3, 2007 Positive Jim rocks. Such a funny guy. First met at Burning Man and got to hang out again in SF. You will definitely have fun if you get to party with him!
From Miss. Moneypenny Phoenix, United States Nov 12, 2007 Positive The time has come for me to write a reference for my favorite couch-toting guy. Jim is a wonderful person. He is sometimes quiet and introspective, and other times silly and outgoing. He has a tendency to talk with his hands (or more specifically his fingers) and it makes me laugh. He is generous with his hugs. I admire what he does for CS a great deal, but there is so much more to him. I hope to know him for a very long time. If you get the chance to meet Jim, make sure you grab it. Safe travels my friend, and I'll see you soon. :-)
From Weston Hankins Homer, United States Oct 31, 2007 Positive Ever since I met him, never seen him dim
So good at nim, never rolling on the rim
True vim, that's Jim!
In his art a touchstone, when he's reached a milestone
Always carrying acetone, never ever monotone
Don't intone, it's Mr. Stone!
Love you bro!
From FG99 Ballarat, Australia Oct 16, 2007 Positive Jim is a fun, friendly, easy-going guy!
From Katrina Mohr Yosemite Village, United States Oct 12, 2007 Positive Jim is a truly adventurous soul. I really enjoyed listening to tales of his travels and what outfits he wore during these times. (I would love to have seen a Pooh Bear running around Curry Village). I may have beat him in the first Scrabble game, but he killed me in the second so a tie breaker is in order. Thank you for coming at the last minute and sharing my last weekend in Yosemite with me. I had a wonderful time.
From Marc Watley Oakland, United States Oct 9, 2007 Positive Funny how Couchsurfing leads to so many friendships with grounded, generous, kind people. Jim is no exception...clearly working to make CS a more fun and useful experience for all. Look forward to helping out Jim and hanging out at more CS gatherings! Kudos!
From CRASH ANOVA San Francisco, United States Sep 19, 2007 Positive I was in a serious bind at the end of Burning Man. I needed to transport all my gear from our camp to our ride home's camp on the other side of Black Rock City. Jim came through in a pinch and lent me his pickup, no questions asked. Very cool! And it helped me out a ton. Later, we got to ride out to the trash fence together on an art car. Jim's a really nice guy.
From Princess Rachelina San Francisco, United States Sep 18, 2007 Positive this guy is a riot. very amusing:) the more i see jim, the more he grows on me. I hope he sticks around sf. jim feels like long lost family:)
From Camtastic San Francisco, United States Sep 12, 2007 Positive Jim's a rockstar who is also on fire. I met this dude at his birthday and was totally blown away by his energy. Long live JIM STONE!
From Kasper Souren Amsterdam, Netherlands Sep 12, 2007 I first met Jim in Montreal, then again in California and New Zealand.
I don't agree with many things Jim writes (while on CouchSurfing's paycheck), but I have respect for the fact that he's writing them openly.
I am sorry for the trouble I caused him (and that I might be causing in the future) and the negativity that I fired at him, but I sincerely hope we can be friends again, some day.
From ANU* Helsinki, Finland Sep 12, 2007 + We had some good times working and hanging out together in (way too many ;) CS collectives in the past year, and I felt very welcome on my stays at the house up the hill. I totally appreciate all the work Jim has done and is doing for CS, and see him as a great volunteer & employee for this organization.
- However, I do not enjoy him doubting my integrity in public without sound reasoning, or observing the (also recent) treatment towards other past volunteers who both of us worked with for months on end. For this reason, spending time on his couch would at this time be somewhat challenging for me.
= Nevertheless, I wish you the best of luck with the new job, and hope it works out for you and CS. I still hope to consider you as a friend, and meet again one day with less bitter feelings (from both sides)
From Peggy Fok Santa Cruz, United States Sep 11, 2007 Positive He's so cool, eccentric and mad!
From TWINKLETOES Townsville, Australia Sep 6, 2007 Positive We love Jim. Whenever he showed up with his little bunny ears or Elvis outfit smiles appeared on our faces. He's a great guy to be around and burning man wouldn't have been the same for us without him.
We really hope to meet up with him again on our travels and will totally go out of our way to see him again!
From VEGASJAMIE Las Vegas, United States Aug 31, 2007 Positive I like his purple toes and finger nail! He was a very gracious guest and was a perfect gentleman the whole time. I would host him again any time.
From PINKFISH San Francisco, United States Aug 22, 2007 Positive Wanna rock with this Pooh bear in SanFran at Halloween!
Wanna see him play drums in his (former) band!
Wanna help him out with the Volunteer Coordination of CS!
Wanna see him choose and go his next direction with whole his heart.
With other words --> I choose to be his friend, which means that I consider him as highly trustworthy :-)
From Noemie Cliche Trudeau Montreal, Canada Jul 24, 2007 Positive I met Jim while washing the dishes in the Montreal collective and we finaly got to know more each other little by little with the milion of rides he gave me in his Texas truck =) and when he surfed my couch. And then more when we met again in SF and on our impromptu road trip to Mexico. Jim has a really special something that makes him an extraordinary person. Maybe it's the fact he chose a life that has nothing to do with the commun pattern or maybe it's because he is so involved in everything he does... but he is unforgettable .
You definitly have to meet this professionnal vagabond and ask him for a ride in his truck. Can't wait to see you again =)
From JMGORMAN Memphis, United States Jul 18, 2007 Positive Don't miss your chance to meet Jim! You won't forget it!
