Groups I Belong ToCouch Information Couch Available: Coffee or a drink Preferred Gender: Any Ok...Heya everyone!! I just got married in June and am still adjusting to domestic bliss :p however currently I am living both in Mumbai(my parents) and in Pune(my husband). I am still planning our crazy Indian wedding later this year with festivities etc and so m time is occupied with that and other stuff. I never thought planning a wedding is SO much work.Anyways, I am open to hosting people when I am free or meeting up for a cup of coffee. Here's a description of the couches when they are available :)
If you want to surf with me, please tell me why..I really am not looking for freeloaders..I believe highly in cs, being pretty active on the site myself. Please take the trouble to fill in your profile and tell me a little bit about yourself.
Lets start with a couple of days and see how it goes...If we get along, well it could be a couple of weeks :)
-----------------------------------------------------------
In the meanwhile,
When I am in Mumbai, I live in South Mumbai..Its easy to get around from here and very easy to access public transportation..Provided I am not busy or traveling, I can definitely show you around, guide you or meet up for coffee or drink...
If I am hosting you, i am inviting you to my home...there are not too many rules, I want you to be comfortable, and want to hang out and learn more about you. Please note however, I will be living with my folks initially, who are super chilled out and easy to be around and hang out with and are a wealth in terms of Indian culture...the history of India, hinduism, music, arts etc. They've lived for over 10 years in the US and traveled extensively, and are always excited to meet my friends and couchsurfers and its always been great times. Dad makes some incredible margharitas :) and Mom spoils everyone with gujarati food.........
the couch:
Two enormously comfortable couches in the living room. Towels, linens and blankets are available.
the ground rules:
-You can go out on your own, but please be back by about midnight. You dont have to be up at the crack of dawn, but need to be a relatively early riser around 7:30 and have breakfast with us.
-There is no lockout but please don't expect to be sitting at home when everyone is out. I do expect you are independent and able to go out on your own to explore the city.
- You are welcome to join in for home cooked vegetarian meals. It would be wonderful if you decide to cook something from where you come should you feel the urge:)
-Please be tidy and mindful that this is my parents' house.
-There is a washing machine if you need to wash your clothes:) and have them ironed
-there is no smoking in the apartment though you can go to the stairwell if you must, and certainly no drugs.
-Internet, local phone calls etc can be made from home
-I would definitely love to give you a tour of south Mumbai, if I'm free
-----------------------------------------------------------
When I am in PUNE with my husband, I may be able to offer couch in your own bedroom with a separate bathroom. Once again, the basic houserules above still apply...I want you to have a great time, though I really can't be the best guide as I am still discovering the city myself, so would be happy to explore with you.
the couch:
Your own bedroom with a queensized bed. Towels, linens and blankets are available if needed.

Personal DescriptionHAHA...how can you sum that up out here?
Anyways, a bit about me...I am fun-loving, crazy, intense, curious, laid back , talkative to a fault, ...I like the arts, music, and learning about other cultures, people, thoughts, ideas and stories....I'm passionate about creating my clothing line, my work.

TRAVEL
Travel is what i find inspires, thrills and motivates me, expanding my view of the world, people, understanding myself better and an exponential growth that deepens your perspective on the world and o n how to address it...I believe that meeting people and experiences help you understand yourself better....
I love stories, and knights, and castles and swords and magic , and I am curious to see people´s political views and their ideas about society and religion....
I went to Burning Man in '04....if you can survive that week there, you can pretty much take anything into stride:-)....Oh and I survived rush hour in Mumbai on a train, do THAT and you CAN SURVIVE ANYTHING
======================================================
WHAT I DO
In 2006 I launched my clothing line in New York, and have realized working for yourself is much more work than working for someone else, but is also immensely more satisfying and fun! I am working with craftsmen in India in order to create textiles for my line and its been an incredible experience. Its the sale part that presents the real challenge...
Taking a break from that I embarked on a year long global trip that was to and did change my perception of a lot of things and made me more sure of certain ways I live life: much more in the moment, without stress and to focus on the very thing you are doing 100%. I also realised that discipline is one of the hardest things to muster and made me realise that I want to spend more time meditating, doing yoga and developing this very elusive quality :)
Having just relocated to India is an interesting challenge. Reintegrating myself into this country after spending almost 8 years in the west is currently what I am doing.
AT THE MOMENT
I just finished working with a well known Non Profit Org that works with slum children as a Creative manager. I loved it..
I recently got married..yikes..to the man who stole my heart! and this was just as crazy as it was unexpected...we're still planning our crazy indian wedding on the original dates later this year...and thus I am pretty busy these days :p I will restart my clothing line in a few months
======================================================
WHAT I WOULD LOVE TO DO SOMEDAY
Ideally I'd love to sail around the world and hopefully live on a boat or a promontary, or on a beautiful house on the cliffs by the sea..I love cities but I can't live without the sea ...I love the sea..How I Participate in CS2i think after CS went down, I decided that i really wanted to be able to make a difference with CS2...to actively participate to help others understand its value and about making it a stronger community. I think that hosting/ hosted aside...which is btw absolutely incredible, i think just spreading the word is just helping spread the project...
The CouchSurfing Collective in Nelson New Zealand changed my perception of CS forever and I am more deeply comitted to it than ever before...these are the people I have wanted to meet all my life...
and i think the wonder of CS is really the fact that you can then get a renewed faith in humanity, especially when the world feels like it needs it.
As of now though I am hosting sporadically, meeting people on and off and also working on the CS design team as an advisor to finally get the logo going :)
I now have a self imposed travel ban so that I can pursuit my life projects with more commitment and regularity...and am in the process of getting less nomadic and more settled ...at least for a while
Still I would be happy to talk about CS with a member should they have difficulties or questions, though
I would rather talk about you and get to learn more about your life and your experiences.
CouchSurfing ExperienceWell I've couchsurfed in the past with various friends and acquaintances all over the world..Its always been fun and a good chance to get a brief glimpse about a person and his/her life in an informal, happy way; with a chance to share and learn something new, with respect to different cultures, lifestyles, languages, everything thereby making it so much more a unique experience.... to generally have fun and hopefully make a new friend...many times really meaningful friendships from chance encounters which have compounded with CS :-)

Interests I love meeting people from different cultures and countries, travelling, photography, reading , movies, music, languages, poetry, cooking.I enjoy philosophy, politics on a global stage), understanding and discussing socio-cultural and economic changes and events that are shaping the world, as well as film and the arts.
Philosophy I personally think travelling is important for everyone....it helps you grow, and also broaden your world perspective...it allows one to take each day as it comes and enjoy every experience that you have, long or short...if you meet people along the way, it only enhances it :-)
Be happy no matter what you do..life is too short to be judgemental and bitter...and fear is a figment of our own imagination... it is better to take chances than none at all :-)
Music, Movies, BooksMOVIES. ..so many...definitely more independent... stuff by David Lynch,Fellini,Krystoff Kieslowski,Akiro Kurosawa,Polanski Lars von Trier, Paul Thomas Anderson,Almadovar, Satyajit ray,Anderson,Terrence Mallick ,hitchcock....stuff like Hero, Happy together , Dog Days, and Requiem for a Dream, memento, pulp fiction, godfather series, the life of julien po, citizen kane, mystic river, garden state, a history of violence, fight club, magnolia, amelie, seven samurai, ran, hero, rashoman, the double life of veronique,Run Lola Run, thank you for smoking(brilliant parts to it really) the three colors:red/white/blue etc, the sea inside, the motorcycle diaries, the March of hte Penguins, Blood diamond...
MUSIC..depends a lot on the mood...pretty diverse. I love music..especially discovering different genres of music while traveling...currently faling in love with fado and flamenco :) Music...depends a lot on the mood...Like Miles Davis,Ella Fitzgerald,U2, mingus, pavarotti, James Blunt, coldplay, fountains of wayne, Oasis, the beatles, rolling Stones,g'n'r, Zero seven,Shivaree, Jack Johnson, Prince, Queen, Gin blossoms,Nina Simone, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Louis Armstrong, Elvis, Johnnie Cash, Beck, Blur, Dave Matthews, aimee mann, Smashin pumpkins, Garbage,Pink floyd,Jeff Buckley, Gomez, Pearl Jam, Amalia Rodriguez, Mariza, Ana Marou, Enrique Morente amongst others...
BOOKS... some of Joseph Campbell, Salman Rushdie,Kerouac amongst others, Milan Kundera, Tolstoy,..some such as The Power Of Myth, The Hero With A Thousand Faces, The inferno, the upanishads, The Gita, The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, the Prophet, the Unbearable Lightness of Being, Hitchiker's guide to the Galaxy, Angela's Ashes.. .i guess theres too many to list...i wind up reading a lot of non fiction...autobiographies included....love political non fiction and history too.Currently reading Shantaram, the Secret and a Man's search for Meaning..Love poetry tooo...esp, Byron, Keats, Whitman, Kipling, Shelley and Dante. Types of People I enjoyI'm a people person...I enjoy swapping stories and hanging out......for the most part I get along well with people who have an easygoing nature, are calm, open and friendly and hopefully have their own perspective on life who have a zest for life and keen on finding solutions, not creating problems.
I like people who have a definite point of view, even if I dont agree with it...Love talking politics,a d about societal norms, organised religion and your views on it ...How you participate in making a difference and what drives you..and motivates youTeach, Learn, ShareFirst and foremost i'd love to discuss the CS project and its relevance and how we can all participate in it more actively and make it a better place!
I have worked on CS Communications actively during the NZ collective in the past and currently help with CS Design, so should anyone have a question, want to volunteer etc, please email me. :-) thanks
amongst other things i guess i can teach Hindi, help people plan their trips to India, help out someone who'd like to explore Indian textiles, someone who wants to discuss fashion and fashion business
Currently I am very interested in rural self sustenance and working on environmentally conscious stuff, which would mean a better world and a happier economy. am also looking into starting work incorporating these two so that I work towards conscientious global design. One Amazing Thing I've Seen or Done I went to Austria to work with a fashion/textile designer who lived and worked out of a 17th century castle, and spending the summer travelling around to Prague/Vienna etc....i took a year off from school to go there and it turned out be an incredible experience and she is an amazing teacher and had the greatest stories to tell of all her unbelievable crazy artist life. But moving to New york...that was incredible...the city has a vibe that just can't let you be down for long.
Spending a year 2007...traveling, learning ...living and understanding life from a completely different perspective.....the quintessential gipsy...or nomad...or turtle considering i had everything I owned in my backpack..I believe I am a better person for that. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity and blessed to have found CS and meet an incredible bevy of people whose diversity, experiences, depth, generosity touched my heart and impacted my mind in ways that I hope that I carry some of the learning with me. I KNOW this system works having been a recipient, participant and traveler.
Finding the clarity to pursue my dreams finally, and falling in love with travel...the greatest teacher of them all :)
And surely there will be more to update...:-) Opinion on the CouchSurfing.com Project I think this is an awesome idea....i joined it over two and a half years ago, and its just gotten better over time :)..thanks Casey for the introduction!
Its been my way of life before, when i stayed with friends, but CS has been an incredible experience of understanding different people and cultures up close, and really being a local wherever you go, not rely on guidebooks and to really experience living in a place rather than just visit it.Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican LIVED: Australia, Austria, Czech Republic, India, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom, United States WANTS TO GO: Afghanistan, Antarctica, Australia, Cambodia, China, Ireland (Republic of), Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Sri Lanka, Turkey IS GOING TO: Italy References
From Kerstin Meister Vienna, Austria Aug 24 Positive i had a really great time with shai in bombay. she and her family were really great with us and we had a lot of fun in mumbai harbour with our lightsabers...
From Destiny Fussa, Japan Aug 17 Positive Shai, Shai, Shai!!! There ain't no word to describe how fabulous this girl is. She is everything a girl can be, pretty, smart, brave, witty, loving, and soooo much more. One of the things I looked forward the most for coming to India was meeting her. She has given me the full attention and special treatment way beyond I thought I deserved while I was surfing at her place. She's got so much love pouring out of her! When she's got that cutiest smile on her face, it'd be impossible for anyone to find her not loverable. We had so much fun together, spending all night with chitter-chatter, had me covered up with jewelery, and she enabled me for riding camels in Rajasthan by arranging everything (and when I say everything I meant EVERYTHING) with comfortable night train ride with bed, hooking me up with the most wonderful guest house, all during the busiest holiday! I can't wait to see her again and travel together in the future!

From Shilp Verma Delft, Netherlands Dec 22, 2007 Positive Chaiiiiiiiiiiiii!! After missing meeting her in Europe due to her lousy planning skills, I finally caught up with her in Ahmedabad. Great fun to hang out with, especially if you are the listening type (even if you aren't, she'll make sure you become one!!) ;-)
Don't miss any opportunity to host or surf / travel with ShAi*, you will fondly remember the time (if you can survive!). Let me assure all of you, this is the best free advice you'll ever be able to extract out of me!
Statutory Health Warning: Her company is, on the one hand, good for your health since she'll give you numerous opportunities to laugh at her HOWEVER...ever since I returned from Ahmedabad, my ears are hurting, due to excessive over-use... my eyes are hurting from all the three-flash-a-second picture sessions... and I have this terrible cold that refuses to go away!! HELPPPPPPPP!! :faint: :faint: :D
From desaparecida Vienna, Austria Dec 20, 2007 Positive we met when shai was in vienna and it was really cool to finally get to know her in person after having read so much from and about her on cs. we went out for dinner and hours passed like minutes - we talked and talked and talked, then marcus joined and we talked even more. shai is a clever girl, very curious and simply a cool person to hang out with. i'm still annoyed that i was too sick to host her, but who knows - maybe next time?
From Mitesh Dave Junagadh, India Dec 16, 2007 Positive Shai is a wonderful person. Speaks a lot & u just want to keep listening. She is full of life, carefree & realistic.
We went to visit some heritage places together & its fun being with her.
From -COSTA- Costantini Florence, Italy Dec 11, 2007 Positive She's the most talented bubble explorer that walks on the planet earth!
From Rahul Sanghvi Ahmadabad, India Dec 10, 2007 Positive Oh what do I say about Shai? She is the best person I've ever met on CS. Full of life, down to Earth, very knowledgeable. She has a big travel bug in her. If you get a chance to meet her, do not miss an opportunity.

From Dharmesh Thakker Mumbai, India Nov 25, 2007 Positive shai.. ! lol i am short of words for her.. a wonderful human being.. i had wonderful time with her at pushkar.. and i can say that she will be one great friend i ever met, i really have no words to write much about her.. haha
From Ram Niwas Khati Kekri, India Nov 25, 2007 Positive I wanted to meet her long ago because I was eager to know how a person looks like who is so dedicated towards CS. I am much impressed by her simplicity and way of involving in CS. Though officially Ciro and I was organizer of the Pushkar CS meeting- 2007 but it is Shai who organized the meeting everyday during the fair and I was a mere participant in it. Had the Shai had not there the CS meet would not have took place (as it was).
I learnt many things from her and it was great to meet her. I can say that she is CS assets. I invited to visit her at my town but due to unavoidable circumstances she could not, but I am sure that she will visit me next time.
From Ian and Magda Webster Brooklyn, United States Nov 10, 2007 Positive Shai was not able to give us a couch this time, but gave us her friendship and invaluable advice about Mumbai and India. Great conversation over much needed coffee and Diwali sweets!
From Bridget Amy Singapore, Singapore Nov 7, 2007 Positive Shai is so incredible!! She arrived in Wellington at 23:30 and we stayed up chatting until 6:30 before deciding we both needed to sleep rather badly. I love chatting to her, she has amazing stories, and even better advice. I promise not to leave her on the train today.... (I will try, but I am forgetful you know??)!!
My big sister who is ROCKIN'!!
From Tridivesh Hitkar New Delhi, India Nov 5, 2007 Positive Leaving a reference for Shai is like drop in the ocean. It was a wonderful experience to host her in Delhi. The best part of her is that she does not take even a second to make even a kid feel comfortable as she always takes the initiatve to start the conversation. Can't recommend her enough......
From Jiten Gajaria Mumbai, India Nov 2, 2007 Positive Writing references for Shai would be like adding some drops to an ocean. But then can't resist the temptation to write a reference for her after just 1 meeting. Long talks on CS, culture, travel, world politics, books and we realised how similar we are. One thing is for sure, Shai is what I call the quintessential nomad and lives upto it. I surely look forward to the planned trips with her.
From AMIT SABHARWAL Gurgaon, India Nov 1, 2007 Positive she is very down to earth girl and one thing i liked about her being in usa for a very long time she never forgotten the indian culture :)jai hind

From Maarten van der Glas Utrecht, Netherlands Oct 29, 2007 Positive With Shai be ready to get into all sorts of interesting situations and get her personal indepth outlook of her on all kinds of subjects. Shai is a very kind person, with her hart on the right place she is always ready to speak her mind.
From Seth Wright New York, United States Oct 28, 2007 Positive Shai is such a wonderful host, I had fun for hours at her apartment with wonderful food, good wine, and even better companionship.
Update 2007:
Shai lived with us as a true roommate/friend, and it was awesome. She is first and foremost a true friend that I'm certain I'll know for years to come :-) There aren't enough words to even adequately describe Shai, just meet her, get to know her, and if you're smart enough you'll understand :-)
I'm looking forward to visiting in India :-)

From PINGODINGO Matraville, Australia Oct 24, 2007 Positive Shai is wicked awesome. We spent two days in the Blue Mountains walking and slipping and sliding and looking at birds hanging upside down in the rain. My recommendation to you is:
Step one: meet Shai. Step two: Bathe in the warmth radiating from her Inner Spirit. Step three: Walk away smiling like a bastid. :-D
From Barry Layden Glasgow, United Kingdom Oct 21, 2007 Positive i think the only person who cared what I said about Scotland :D I tend to talk ma wee country up a lot and Shai seemed to love it which is GRAND!! Shai's a nice lass and makes a gOOd VEGGY :( Curry. you still owe me a japati!
From Nela Rimmerova Prague, Czech Republic Oct 11, 2007 Positive i met shai in bombay 1 of my favorite cities on CS meeting and i dare to say we liked each other from that moment... her enthusiasm and broad knowledge of many things make her very interesting and fun to hang out with. shai can enjoy active as well as non active time..she came to surf my couch for few days and then returnetd to prague to stay with 1 of my friends. since i had been hosting another friend of mine. i had the oportunity and pleasure of her company while she was in prague on many occassions and i am looking forward to meeting with her and surf her couch in bombay on my next india trip...

From ENGELEN Prague, Czech Republic Oct 7, 2007 Positive Three words. Love, Warmth and Intelligence. All in the same package that makes up this woman. Kind of like an Kinderegg. Shai is a wonderful person who is always close to a laugh and curious about stuff. We went and saw titties together and laughed at the other spectators! :)
From SPYRO Kathmandu, Nepal Oct 7, 2007 Positive Soooo Shai* what can I say that hasn't been said? Not much I guess. Shai* stood me up on many many occassions and came to visit recently. We have had some amazing conversations online and now off. She is a Couchsurfer to the core. She can talk a lot but is afraid to swim in the cold Attersee. She is a friend and good guest, simple as that.
From Aida Tavares Aveiro, Portugal Oct 2, 2007 Positive We had a very nice beer at Mercado Negro. God! She's talkative.
From Christine Hinterlang Vienna, Austria Sep 29, 2007 Positive We met at the NZ Collective where she was working hard (and hosting us) along with the other volunteers. There I met a wonderful girl with lots of potato caiprinha experience. We have since blazed the party trail in Salzburg ("I think you should leave now...":) and got to hang out in cellars of dodgy pubs, coffee bars and flex in Vienna. Shai* rocks.
From Marcus Eder Vienna, Austria Sep 25, 2007 Positive ShAi and I spent hours talking and discussing CS and working on the new logo (gave some feedback*gg*) and than talked long and also on the next day....
Look forward to meet her again and she is always welcome back.
From Virginia Salas Salzburg, Austria Sep 23, 2007 Positive I love Shai!!! She's an amazing and beautiful woman (inside and out). From the first time you meet her you can feel the positive aura just streaming out of her. She is glad to express this with an awestrucking smile. She is fun and great to talk to. And apparently with both have simiular clepto tendencies which will result to us slipping a plastic banana or a pear into our bags. I hope to see you soon biatch :) .
It has been an honor.
Police quote " uhh... I think it's better you leave now."
All my love,
Virginia
From Chris Burley Brattleboro, United States Sep 16, 2007 Positive A bollywood star with a golden heart ... an uncanny ability to hold a decent conversation with tree bark, and never fails to put a smile on others faces!
From SALZBURGMICHI Finsing, Germany Sep 14, 2007 Positive met shai* in vienna. she is a person who has much to say and has a pretty impressing humor, can talk and laugh with her about neraly every toppic. i'm sure she' ll give me some advice for my trip to india in november. cu soon michael
From Maia Gellert Warsaw, Poland Sep 13, 2007 Positive Wonderful sense of humour, great conversationalist and that type of person u wanna have by your side while traveling. Or while she's traveling. Or actually it doesn't matter - u just don't want her to be too far away :) she's just soooo much fun to be around. And keep in mind that Shai is (what should be taken as a compliment) badly addicted and totally dedicated to CS. Which in fact is the way it should be - CS is or at least should be all about and for people like her. Hope to c u again and with more time this time girl!
