Couch Information

No couch currently available for surfing.

Couch picture

4 kind boys in a sunny Bucktown apartment. And yet there is still room for couchsurfers! Sleep on couches, floors, an extra matress, a futon, an inflatable mattress.

Andrew likes music and computers.
Sethward likes art and computers.
Bretzel likes tea and computer music.
Nichols likes biking and physics.

(More accurately, we all like all of these things. Probably.)

The Western blue line L (subway) stop is about 4 blocks from here, and then its only a quick 15 minute ride to downtown Chicago. One of us might be able to show visitors around, but it all depends on the timing. We usually go to bed pretty late here. A good 2 or 3 days is probably our max for visitors.

Personal Description

I grew up in a small town in Virginia, and did not board my first passenger jet until my senior year of university. Once I finally did, the travel bug bit me, and I was off. I lived and worked in Chicago for 2 years, and now I'm traveling the world and volunteering for CouchSurfing.com.

How I Participate in CS2

I'm a member of the CouchSurfing tech team. I do a small bit of web development, but am more focused on keeping the servers alive and healthy.

CouchSurfing Experience

I first heard of CouchSurfing from a friend in January 2006. I spent the next year and a half hosting people from all over the world in my Chicago apartment. Now, I'm traveling, and can't wait to CouchSurf with all of you!

Interests

Music, classical guitar, chess, biking, photography, contra dancing, modern physics, computers, electronics, adventures.

Philosophy

I value learning and self improvement. Traveling is one of the best and most enjoyable ways to do both. I have no expectations about the world, and am constantly surprised and amazed by it.

Music, Movies, Books

Music: The Books, Sufjan Stevens, The Mars Volta, Javanese Gamelan, bluegrass, JS Bach, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Joanna Newsom, The Women's Choir of Sofia, Kitka, Andres Segovia, Christopher Parkening, Django Reinhardt...

See also: last.fm

Movies: Baraka, The Jerk, Down By Law.

Types of People I enjoy

open minds

Teach, Learn, Share

I love to teach. I can teach a bit of guitar, I love to rant about the mind boggling weirdness of modern physics, and I enjoy explaining computers in non-computer jargon.

Opinion on the CouchSurfing.com Project

CouchSurfing broadcasts kindness and understanding from the depths of the interwebs.

Andrew is a very smart guy. Our uncrowned sysadmin-king, he is always busy keeping our wonderful community in the air (of course with the help of his great fellow henchmen-sysadmins :) ). I enjoyed living and working with him, and even though he tends to bring too much shit to hiking-trips, he is a great guy to hang out with :)

Andrew is an endless collection of blissful moments packed in a boredom-proof container (100% recycled materials). Be prepared to laugh with him the way you used to laugh as an 8-year-old. Because if someone can bring you back that spotless thrill of your childhood, that naive curiosity for the world around you, that's, undoubtedly, Mr. Otto.

We were so lucky to have Andrew as our first visitor! He is a lovely person and a considerate guest.

So, when he was in Bangkok again, I was really happy to host him for a few more days. Now we had the chance to hang out together more and had good fun. Do get to know Andrew if you have the chance! Among other skills, he is really good at helping you buy a computer and fantastic at washing the dishes :-)

I felt instantly cozy with Andrew in Chicago. He is a wonderfully interesting, funny, and playful guy who left me in the hands of his great roomates for the majority of my trip. I felt right at home with Bret and Seth; late night bike rides through Chicago, frisbee in the park, stimulating sounds, love for art and technology, and general silliness from morning till morning. I didn't really want to leave...
Also, if you surf Andrew's pad, bring your game face, because chess in this apartment is not taken lightly.

Thanks Andrew. We were stuck in Chicago because our flight was cancelled. Little cash. He got back to us quickly. Good place to stay. Great roommates and friends. Best wishes for the future.

A welcoming, open-minded, trusting, inquisitive, kind-hearted man who surrounds himself with fascinating like-hearted people. The measure by which all future hosts shall be judged.

I surfed Andrew's couch during the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. I didn't really see him at all, but from the beginning he was very welcoming and trusting and his roommates were very friendly too! Thanks a lot!

We didn't have much time to talk to Andy while attending his extraplesant dinner party but we hope to make it up in the future when we come through Chicago again. He was a great party host and if you can judge a man by his friends, a great person. Also, I can attest, this man makes the best vegetarian chili I've ever had!

Andrew is wonnnnnnderful. So sweet, so generous, so smart, and he plays a mean rendition of Mario Brothers on the guitar. Ryan and I felt like honored guests in his apartment. And now we're trying to find a good excuse to come back.

Great guy! Get to know him if you can. You won't meet many people as genuine as Andrew.

Andrew has a face that inspires trust. He's a extremely likeable, friendly, and engaging guy who enjoys such activities as baking everything cookies, square dancing, and rocking out to old Nintendo theme songs. There's nothing to dislike.

Andrew is vibrant and very positive. He and Kate stayed with me for 2 nights while they explored Vancouver and I could tell he was trustworthy and honest from the first moment we met. He's very kind & he and Kate were great guests! Either of them is welcome back anytime! Thanks for the cake! It was delicious!!

Andy and his friend Kate stayed with us for a night. They were great fun, great conversationalists, and we shared lots of fun chats as well as some really yummy chocolates and a good hookah! Would reccomend hosting any time!
