Couch Information
Couch Available: Maybe Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 1
Shared Sleeping Surface: No Shared Room: YesJust a studio apartment with a recliner chair, loveseat, or floor to share. EDIT - I'm moving to Spain in December 2008 and rented my house (below). In the mean time, I have a little studio apartment. It's not a big place, but if you really need a place, my love-seat and/or recliner might be able to accommodate you. I live in Maplewood; an easy walk to shops, grocery store, bars, etc. And public transit couldn't be easier from where I live (major bus stop in front of my house, Metrolink nearby.)
I'm trying to sell my house, so if you stay here, we may all have to go out and hide somewhere while someone comes to look at the house. But if you're ok with that, so am I. I've got two spare bedrooms, but only one has furniture. If you're just a couple travelers or less, then you can have the master bedroom. If you're a traveling Jazz band or several (you know who you are), then my floors are your floors.
I live in the Shaw neighborhood, a block and a half north of Tower Grove Park. A bus runs right in front of my house and one of the cool business districts in STL is just a walk across the park. (It's the South Grand area; lots of international food!) Downtown is 3 miles away as the crow flies and Forest Park is 2.
My schedule is very flexible. I'm self-employed and will probably have time to show you around and/or go out for food or drinks if you're up for it. I've learned a LOT about this city in the last 4 years I've lived here and if you want to know about or see what makes STL such an underestimated and surprisingly cool city, I'd be happy to show you. Personal DescriptionI'm easy going, yet driven. I'm really not offended by much of anything. I want to get a lot out of life. I believe in living your dreams. If you'd love to do something, then get off the couch and figure out how to make it happen. At the core, I'm a thinker; so I love an interesting conversation. But I also love getting out and having fun with cool people. From what I've learned about Couch Surfing so far, chances are pretty good that you're one of the cool people. How I Participate in CS2Once upon a time, I traveled for many months surfing the couches of kind hosts along the west coast of the US. These days, I'm back home in STL and have a big house that wants to lodge itinerant travelers coming my way.CouchSurfing Experience"Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity. They seem more afraid of life than death."
- James F. Byrnes
I found this site just before I began my long travels. In the four months I spent surfing the couches of others and many many months of hosting I've done since, I have only met incredible people! This community really has renewed my faith in humanity. I had no idea that there were so many great people out there--and so many of them generous enough to share their home. I'm honored to give back. My thanks to everyone on this site who helps make it great!InterestsTravel, obviously. I love music: playing, listening, talking. Technology. Literature. Writing. Thinking. Philosophy. How things work. History. And pretty much everything else.PhilosophyI think everyone should learn as much as possible. It gives us much needed perspective. I think you can do anything you put your mind to. If you have a dream, then stop sitting around and do it. And I hope you're dreaming big!Music, Movies, BooksBands: Damien Rice, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Rogue Wave, Death Cab, Nada Surf, and plenty more.
Books: "Till We Have Faces" by C.S. Lewis (all-time favorite). I would post what I'm currently reading, but I don't want to update my profile hourly.
Types of People I enjoyInteresting people. There's nothing more fun than an interesting conversation. It can be about pretty much anything. But what's your perspective on things? Believe it or not, I love when people disagree with me. It gives me a chance to see the world in a new way. There's no reason we can't be friends just because we have a different opinion on something. In fact, I think it's the different opinion that makes the friendship more interesting. My friends know me as the guy who smiles while he disagrees with you.Teach, Learn, ShareI'm interested in almost everything. So tell me what you think about. I'm pretty well versed in philosophy and that sort of thing (I have a BA in Philosophy). Also, I'm very experienced with computers, so if you need help, I'm glad to lend a hand. And I'm pretty good at fixing most other things. Let me help you out.One Amazing Thing I've Seen or Done"Every increased possession loads us with new weariness."
- John Ruskin
One thing I did to get ready to travel was to sell most everything I own. This really made me realize how little I actually need. I took the bare minimum with me while I lived with a friend for a few months and found that I didn't even use 80% of the stuff I brought there. Now, I think everything I really need will fit in my backpack... but it is a good sized backpack.
Opinion on the CouchSurfing.com ProjectThis site is great. It relies on the kindness of strangers, which I think is a fantastic thing to bring out in people. Let's show that the world is full of good people!Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Slovakia, United States LIVED: Slovakia, United States References
From April Menegazzo Milwaukee, United States Dec 1 Positive Ryan has amazing energy! I enjoyed every moment of our conversation. He is so passionate, vibrant, and easy to be around. His knowledge of St Louis is profound, he could easily host his own travel show or write for a site promoting the city. He is definitely one of those people who make the difference; to experience something through his words and perspective is to open your eyes to the beauty in details so often missed.
From Lynsey Schwab Chicago, United States Sep 25 Positive Ryan is a great person, and a wonderful guest. I had a great time with him during his weekend in Chicago, and would definitely recommend his company. He's got plenty to talk about, plus an convenient computer at all times to help with directions. ;)
Best of luck with everything you've got going, Ryan. Hope to see you again! Maybe in St. Louis... eating hummus?
From Jennifer Gorman Albuquerque, United States Sep 16 Positive Ryan is a great host. He knows St. Louis like the back of his hand and provided me a mini-tour suitable for the amount of time I was staying there. Even though I didn't get to see the City Museum on the inside, I still was mesmerized by its exterior and most definitely will go there should I ever return to St. Louis.
From Ana Cristina Goes Sao Paulo, Brazil Aug 28 Positive Ryan was a very pleasant company in Saint Louis. He was very kind on hosting me in his beautiful house and sharing a little bit of his expertise in IT with me. He is a real expert! Thanks a lot for setting up the router in my laptop! Also enjoyed a lot watching the new Woody Allen movie. It hasn´t been released in Brazil yet..To sum up, loved my CS experience in US. Ryan is a very kind and intelligent guy. Hope to see him again in Europe. Good luck in Madrid!
From ALISSA886 West Hartford, United States Aug 28 Positive The Term couch surfing tour guide does not describe Ryan enough. Ryan is an incredibly energetic wonderful fun guy. He treats you more as friend then as a guest and he is full of great facts and useful knowledge. Ryan truly encompasses what couch surfing is about. I really enjoyed my stay with him in St. Louis. I hope to one day meet up with him again! Ryan is amazing...its just that simple!
From Amanda Delcore Aurora, United States Aug 27 Positive We stayed with Ryan for a little under 1 night. Unfortunately had to jet before our time was up, but not due to anything related to our host. It was a good introductory experience to couchsurfing. Enjoyed talking with Ryan, and he gave us a great tip about where to go in St. Louis.
From Luis Osuna Whittier, United States Aug 25 Positive Great guy! Too busy for his own sake though. He had great recommendations for me (thanks for the City Museum bro). Highly recommended.
From Markus Sproll Irvine, United States Aug 21 Positive Ryan has a great place and is an experienced host. He is also very well informed about his city's history and current issues. Even though he was busy with work he went out of his way to give me sightseeing tips and take me out on several gastronomic adventures.
From Cedric Kennel San Francisco, United States Aug 12 Positive Ryan is a professional CSs' host ! He hosted me for 2 nights and took me out on a nigth tour in Saint-Louis. He's a very generous and interesting guy. Enjoy Madrid and Europe !
From Javier Bejerano Colmenarejo, Spain Aug 11 Positive Ryan is probably one of the most generous person Ive ever met, he took for a ride and he showed me the best of his city. I had an awesome time with him, if you surf his couch you wont regret it. THANKS RYAN!!!!
From GUIDODG Padova, Italy Aug 11 Positive Ryan was a great host. He spent time with us, was really flexible. We had interesting conversations and he gave me a free IT consultation!!! I really hope to see you again. Be cool in Spain
From ADAMH Chicago, United States Aug 11 Positive GUIDODG and I surfed at Ryan's place for a weekend in St. Louis. His house is comfortable and accessible to the main drags in STL. We came down with a plan, and though we certainly didn't stick to it, Ryan was flexible with our schedule, and joined in with us when he could. Ryan is a great host, and I wish him all the best in Spain! Nos vemos, amigo.
From CHELSE.RHEA Saint Louis, United States Aug 11 Positive A kind host for the evening!
From Mike Hartman San Luis Obispo, United States Aug 1 Positive Ryan was a great host! Very friendly and extraordinarily knowledgeable of the St. Louis area, he was very quick to show us around town. Additionally, a fun conversationalist; my buddy and I spent several hours chatting it up with him.
From Ajay Sharma Atlanta, United States Jul 30 Positive Ryan was an amazing host! My stay with him was my very first experience with CS and it couldn't have been any better. I was in St. Louis trying to secure housing for law school this fall and he went out of his way to give me good ideas and tips on where to search and what to look for. He's incredibly knowledgeable about the city and is unbelievably accommodating (he had me stay in the master bedroom in his house!). His house, by the way, is amazing! Definitely a great member and representative of the CS community!
From Jeanine Dargis Northampton, United States Jul 17 Positive Ryan was an awesome host.. we're sorry we couldn't have stayed another night!
From Lizzy Tabor Northampton, United States Jul 14 Positive Staying with Ryan was awesome! His house is beautiful and he has a beautiful guest room for us to stay in. Ryan was a great host and he enjoyed showing us around. Ryan rocks!
From ELJUICE Kansas City, United States Jul 9 Positive Two friends and I where in St. Louis for the weekend and we stayed at his amazing house. The sad part of it was that he was not there to greet us. He left a key for us to be able to use his place but we didn't meet him until the next morning. He seems like a great host, I think we just caught him at the wrong time and we had a short time ourselves to spend in St. Louis. I recommend staying with him.
From Arthur Ryan Saint Louis, United States Jul 8 Positive Ryan was my bridge into the couch surfing community. When I wrote him an e-mail, timidly asking him if it was alright for me to attend a CS gathering at his house, he responded immediately by welcoming me to the Couch Surfing community and inviting me to his get-together. I had a wonderful time at his house, and met many of the other Saint Louis surfers who I've gotten to know. Ryan made sure that I felt welcome at that first meeting, and his intelligence, witt, and life philosophy gave me a good impression of couch surfing that has been confirmed again and again. I'll always be thankful that he welcomed me to the CS community and think that he represents much of what is great about this community.
From Kate M. Natalie M. and Julia Chandler Salt Lake City, United States Jul 3 Positive Ryan was an awesome host! He was welcoming and friendly. I enjoyed the St. Louis architectural tour, and his vast knowledge of gadgets. The next time I buy a computer, it will be a Mac laptop. Thanks, Ryan!
From Rachel Murphy Kansas City, United States Jul 2 Positive Ryan was a very gracious and enthusiastic host. He convinced us to stay longer and gave us a walking tour of the cool bars and shops of St. Louis. His home is beautiful and he couldn't have made us feel more welcome.
From Oscar Escamez Almansa, Spain Jul 2 Positive Considering that I was going to get my first CS experience with Ryan, this couldn't have been any better and it encouraged me to continue with this CS adventure with other people. Ryan was the perfect host. He showed me around the city (god, he knew so many things about it!) and explained many interesting things to me. His house is just incredible. I'd surely consider buying it if I were to live in St. Louis.
From Ryan Grass Overland Park, United States Jul 1 Positive I had my first couch surfing experience at Ryan's and I couldn't of asked for a better host. He is a true couch surfer and a great guy to talk to.
Thanks for setting my friends and me up for the night and I hope your plans to go to school in Spain work out.
From Jackie Milne Aspelt, Luxembourg Jun 23 Positive Ryan was the perfect host. He met at Union Station ,gave a tour of the city and then took me to a lovely Vietnamese place for dinner. He knows a lot about St Louis and his crossword skills are mind-blowing ;o)
From Devin Powell San Francisco, United States Jun 21 Positive Ryan is the crowned prince of St. Louis couchsurfing, and the mob of surfers that crowds his home every night is his court. He has an incredibly positive outlook on life and loves the couchsurfing philosophy.
From Simon, Ange, David Love Wellington, New Zealand Jun 16 Positive Thank you for answering our Louis prayers, Ryan.
He was a wonderful host and a great time was spent, although it was shorter than we would have liked!
I can see my house from here...
From Arielle Paiement Montreal, Canada Jun 15 Positive Like an angel, Ryan appeared to my 2 friends and I in a Greyhound station a night we expected to spend in a drain and brought us back to his paradise :-D, and we slept late that night, singing and playing music! Ryan knows where to go to enjoy St.Louis, and his couchsurfer's party was really great!
Good luck with your abroad studies, and thanks again for that great couchsurfing experience :-)
From Evan St. Andrew Petaluma, United States Jun 13 Positive Ryan hosted me in his super green ultra pad for a night with 3 crazy Canadians and lots of musical instruments. I'm not sure if we will ever get over singing "a whole new world" in duet, but all weirdness is forgiven by THE FACT THIS MAN PILLAGED HIS IPOD TO SAVE MINE! Needless to say, as a freelance assassin I am happy to provide him with a free hit anytime.
From Denise Thomas New Athens, United States Jun 13 Positive Good times in his sweet house, He's a very cool chill guy, who is very bright.
From Margaret Guthrie Little Rock, United States Jun 3 Positive Great first experience at having a couch surfer stay at my place! This guy is multi-talented and a superb conversationalist. I look forward to visiting him in St. Louis
From Rory and Marisol Doyle Phoenix, United States May 26 Positive BUY THIS GUY'S HOUSE!!!
Seriously, Ryan has the best house for sale in St. Louis, and even though it's for sale, he let us surf there. What a nice place! He took us to a great Vietnamese restaurant in town...make sure you ask about it.
Thanks for everything Ryan. Somebody buy his house so he can go to grad school in Spain! Good luck.
From Caroline and James Davis Chicago, United States May 22 Positive Ryan put up our whole 5 piece jazz band in his place! It turned out to be a good experience staying with him. Thanks for the great hospitality, Ryan! Sorry we didn't have a lot of time to hang out...
From Danny Drachsler San Francisco, United States May 19 Positive Ryan is a considerate host and a friendly guy. Thanks for taking me out to chill at the jazzy coffee shop, and for the good conversation. Good luck making it to Spain!
From Lukas Buehler Zollikon, Switzerland May 17 Positive Good conversations and knows his town. We all looked back on our stay with Ryan with super positive memory. Hope to see you again one day in life.
From Adi Nevo and Colleen McNally-Murphy Berkeley, United States Apr 25 Positive We stayed with Ryan in St. Louis, and had a great time. He took excellent care of us -- even gave us a tour of the 1904 World's Fair and took us to get amazing frozen custard! We highly recommend trying to get in touch with Ryan while in St. Louis, at least to grab a drink with if not to stay for a while.
From Jens-Peter Johannsen Berlin, Germany Apr 17 Positive The man who introduced me to couchsurfing...may you have changed my life...if I only had known when I once up in the Northwest...thank you very much...
From Jean-Marc Knoll London, United Kingdom Apr 11 Positive Fact: Ryan is the consummate host. My first CS experience went like a dream. Not only did Ryan go to extreme lengths to make sure we were comfortable, happy and relaxed but he drove us places, entertained us and made St. Louis an altogether unforgettable place. Cheers mate!!!
From Hannie Blair San Antonio, United States Apr 1 Positive I stayed at Ryan's for 5 nights. He gave me a rockin master bedroom and we had very little fleeing to do from prospective buyers. Ryan is a really interesting guy who always has something to talk about. Great times!
From Georgiana Phua Chicago, United States Mar 24 Positive Ryan was a great host! Though he was busy trying to sell his house, he let us (myself, my sister and a friend) stay at his place for 2 nights and brought us on a quick car tour around Forest Park. We had a hilarious time fleeing his house before potential buyers came on our last morning in STL. Always welcome on my couch in Chicago/ wherever.
From Eric Wilson Durham, United States Mar 23 Positive Ryan was very welcoming even though he was trying to get his house ready to show the next morning. He was a great host for a first-time couch surfer. Unfortunately we didn't get to stick around as long as we would have liked.
From AMTREKKER Clovis, United States Feb 28 Positive Ryan is an incredible host and a great guy to spend some free time with. If you ever find yourself thinking, "I wish I knew everything there is to know about the history of St. Louis." then you owe it to yourself to surf with this guy. He can converse with the best of them and wont let you down if you're looking for an interesting time.
From Melissa Knowles Bellingham, United States Feb 27 Positive Ryan was awesome. Real easy going, great with over the phone directions, can play any song on the guitar, and will stay up extra late just to watch lost so youre not watching it alone.
I genuinely enjoyed the time spent couchsurfing with Ryan and would reference him to anyone.
From Elizabeth Zirk San Francisco, United States Jan 6 Positive This philosophy guy loves to converse. As do I! He is infinitely open to new things and eager to learn about the world. A great surfer, and he became a friend during his stay... I'm only sorry I've got a bigger vocabulary! Ryan is good people...
From Brooks Becker Saint Louis, United States Jan 3 Positive Ryan and I met at the last minute Irish Pub CS'ers meeting. I had a great time chatting over a pint and I am looking forward to hanging out again!!!
From SKYEHIKER Webster Groves, United States Jan 2 Positive Ryan has a fantastic disdain for conversations that stall out at the daily news: rightly preferring to seize the connection such opportunities bring, to not just swap stories, but swap "life." He strikes me as one of those who confidently knows what he wants and does what he needs to do to get it. I enjoyed meeting Ryan at our latest CS Gathering, and look forward to conversing w/ him again.
From Hana Hwang Hollywood, United States Dec 20, 2007 Positive For my first couchsurfing guest, it was a real delightful experience. We hit it off really well, and i'm so glad to have met him. Easygoing, cheerful, and a really nice guy you can trust with your keys! He's good company when you're feelin in a funk, great person to talk to if you're smart enough, and a go to guy about technical stuff. Thanx Ryan! We shall meet again someday, on your couch!
From Laura Hollywood, United States Dec 10, 2007 Positive Ryan was very polite, courteous and neat. Sorry I wasn't around more, Ryan!
From David Dean Portland, United States Nov 10, 2007 Positive I really enjoyed having Ryan as a house guest. Ryan is very easy going and cordial and I highly recommend you host him if you have the chance. He is welcome back anytime.
From Sarah Havens Portland, United States Nov 4, 2007 Positive This terribly nice guy tuned my guitar for me and entertained us all with his great stories. I'm glad he was able to meet up with us while he was in town, and I'm sure we'll hang out again before he leaves!
From Matthew Nye Portland, United States Nov 1, 2007 Positive fun hangin out in pdx. awesome guitar player as well. still waiting for tips on how I can be a Professional Adventurer, look forward to a step-by-step manual.
From Scott Lewis Portland, United States Oct 30, 2007 Positive Ryan seems like a really great guy, witty and friendly. Every time I turned around him he was talking to someone new, which in my opinion is what makes a great traveler. And on top of it he was a very low impact and neat guest...
Host him!
From Jim and Terri Crowell Portland, United States Oct 29, 2007 Positive Ryan was a charming guest. Not only was he easy to accommodate but he is an incredible Mr. Fixit. Anything we mentioned, he was right in there and had it fixed. Terri's computer is now starting up in 3 minutes instead of 25. When I almost rented a video and then remembered that we had changed satelite suppliers and the dvd and vhs weren't reconnected yet, he said "Get it. I bet I can have it running in 2 minutes. AND HE DID! (But it took him a whole 10 minutes to get the VHS working. :-) (It would have taken me a couple of hours, at least. Ever since he got away, we keep seeing "Ryan things" Ryan knows exactly how to do it and accomplished the repairs quickly with a delightful smile on his face. Thanks Ryan. We would love to have you come back. The welcome mat will always be there for you. Best wishes in your venture.
From Lisa Redmond Seattle, United States Oct 28, 2007 Positive Ryan is an awesome guy.
From Leah Meltzer Seattle, United States Oct 15, 2007 Positive Ryan was extremely open and positive. Before we even hung out we´d created a plan for linking our trips to Spain. He is welcome in my neck of the woods anytime!!
From Klaire Rueckert Seattle, United States Oct 11, 2007 Positive The gadget guru himself! Not only is Ryan an awesome, respectful couchsurfer, but he also turned into a pseudo host at the same time! He ran all over town exploring with other couchsurfers coming through my place, as well as my roommates. On TOP of that, he's especially handy.. I came home to fixed plumbing, for which I'm eternally greatful! Many thanks, he's welcome back anytime. On top of THAT, he's exited about the CS community...Host him!!!
From Isabel Peterson Seattle, United States Oct 9, 2007 Positive Ryan surfed on my roommate's couch. We explored the center of the universe (freemont)together with Steven and also the Seattle Underground. Ryan is an awesome fellow I trust completely. He is good company and a very clever fellow with many talents. I will miss his presence on our couch.
From Charlet Didier Lausanne, Switzerland Oct 4, 2007 Positive Well, nothing like a first impression, and after a diner in a french restaurent and a soiree wandering in Seattle, I can say he's a nice guy, in my book, for a red head
From Steven De Poorter Roeselare, Belgium Sep 23, 2007 Positive ryan is a great friend and a good philosopher, it was a pleasure chatting with him and today we're g oing to the rainforest together, it'll be awesome! |
