Couch picture

This couch in the photo is the old one in the basement, we now have a sleek black leather one.

I highly recommending potential surfers post up on the District of Columbia message board http://www.couchsurfing.com/group.html?gid=305

Other people who might be contactable in my co-op household are:

Andrew, http://www.couchsurfing.com/people/denverandrew

Alex & Christine, http://www.couchsurfing.com/people/fallingzappone

Rob,
http://www.couchsurfing.com/people/understatementjones

--------------------

This couch is the one in the basement. We also have several in the living room and some open space (see the couch photos) elsewhere but for privacy this is the best.

Most people in the house work so we can show you around during the weekends or around work and lunches are definitely possible (as well as some flexible hours for some of our work environments).

Prior to saying yes on any couchsurf, I'm going to have to run the stay and your details by the house, so try and give me a day or two notice.

Rules of the house (as required by the house):

*Max length of stay is 5 days (although we have made exceptions)

*You are out of the house in the morning by the time i'm out of the house (generally about 9am) or the last person leaves (generally me) if this has been previously discussed and agreed

*A polite deference to those who have to work in the morning for the bathroom

*We use a community food system so if you choose to dive-in (and we're not stopping you) then all we ask is for a beer run (or $5 bucks a day).

"Common sense" customs

*Pitch in and clean when you can

*Don't leave a mess around (If you need space to unpack and repack let someone know, we can generally accommodate)

*Knock before entering a closed door

*Ask before borrowing something (we don't mind generally)

*Be considerate of others at night (People tend to hit bed around 11 and everyone here is a working bloke)

To quote our ongoing ad on craigslist:
The house is inhabited by four guys and three girls. We are a co-operative house that shares food, common space, and house expenses, and do weekly house chores. We have BBQs, parties, and spontaneously we cook dinner together. Some of us eat meat and some of us don't. We're sensitive to vegans, veggies, and those intolerant of disaccharide sugars found in dairy products or other edible irregularities, but we're not so sensitive to intolerance in general.

We live three blocks from the Columbia Heights metro, two blocks from the Giant supermarket, and one block away from the Wonderland bar and grill. You can quickly walk (or more quickly bike) to the National Zoo, Rock Creek park, Mt. Pleasant, Adams Morgan, Howard University, U Street. We're also 20-30 min by metro from the National mall, the Smithsonian musems, the capitol, etc.

Large living room, dining room, lounge, kitchen, washer and dryer, central AC, cable TV, high speed Wi-Fi, front yard lawn, and an open backyard w/ enormous homebuilt grill are all amenities. Street parking is not a problem.

Personal Description

Blog and Website www.wonderfullyrich.net

If you are coming to DC and are a US Citizen, why don't you spend some time with your elected representatives? You're here, why not tell them what you think about how they are doing? Want to know how, ask me! (I don't care what party you are, you should be engaged!)

I'm the (non-god-like) IT Guy for a Quaker Peace Lobby in Washington DC now and am sort of settled again. If it wasn't for that I'd be wandering. As I write this in the last 12 months I've been to Orlando, Key West, Washington DC, Memphis, St. Louis, Denver, Honolulu, California, ChristChurch (and all over NZ), Sydney, Narita(shortly), Shanghi, all along the Yangtze, Seoul, Bangkok, Koh Tao, New Delhi, Agra, Ho Chi Minh, and probably many more to come. I've lived in a car and know what it's like to live "homeless," I've lived in the wilds of industrial McMurdo, I've lived out of a bag for ages on end, I lived as the minority, I've lived without knowing the language.

I spent years trying to find what I wanted to do, and now I'm just finding myself among the world. I want to see the world, not for the world itself, but for the people. I love people and hate society, or perhaps more aptely, I hate the direction that humanity is headed.

In the mean time while I figure out how I can help in my own small way, I'm learning about life and culture directly. Never finished college, I'm somewhat of an autodidact. Read like mad when I can, love to talk and more to listen.

I created an Ice wiki for all those antarctic questions you might have and have always wanted to know about the Ice!

I'm also on Hospitality Club.

How I Participate in CS2

Right now I contribute best by finding and bringing cool and hip people to this wonderful website. I joined a CSC in New Zealand (early 2006) and helped CS to continue to be a useful tool for people around the world and not a crazy web dating site. I am now one of the CS City Ambassadors for Washington DC and help organize and guide some CS'ers to couches near me.

CouchSurfing Experience

I find that people I have time to get to know and talk about real life the most fascinating part of my life. The bullshit of day to day life is necessary, but couch surfing with friends in Australia, or New Zealand, or California, or New York, Seoul, Thailand, or India has been some of the most memorable and shaping times of my life.

Interests

Volleyball, Music, Documentary making, Nature Photography, Traveling, enjoying people's company

Philosophy

Not sure I have much of one that's stable, but the core seems to be: Love life, Love people, help humanity, Waste little, and see the world.

I'd have to say that the Couchsurfing Philosophy is a significant part of my thoughts now given a multiplicity of reasons.

Music, Movies, Books

Movies:Amile, Crash, Spiderman 2, Motorcycle Diaries, V for Vendetta, SERENITY..hmmm.. have to think.

Books:Old man and the Sea, All the Kings's Men, Forever Peace, Fugitive Pieces, the God of small things, The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, A Stranger in a Strange Land. www.goodreads.com/profile/wonderfullyrich

Music: world collage, Mingus, BXF, Taxi Doll, Coldplay, Eminem, John Mayer, M-Pact, Sarah McLachlan, Bjork, The Postal Service, & Strange things with a good beat.

Types of People I enjoy

Thoughtful types. Listeners and readers. Those who have learned that communication is the toughest battle in a friendship or a relationship. Veggimites, as they inspire me to return to a discipline. Lovers, of life, of humanity, and of course of me. :)

Teach, Learn, Share

How to use a computer 101. How to knit. How to build a basic website. Share a philosophy on communication.

One Amazing Thing I've Seen or Done

Seen: Antarctica. A beautifully peaceful place that is barely touched by humans, making for the most natural place on earth.

Done: Couchsurfed in El Salvador before the site was popular.

Seen: a new city built up the hill from a permanetly flooded place, Fengdu, China.

Meditated: At with the sea from the beautiful and peaceful cove on Koh Tao, Thailand.

Eaten: the stunning food of China.

Devoured: Pad Thai in Thailand and become addicted to the "proper" spice.

Enjoyed: Kimchi Mandu from street vendors in Korea and fallen in love with such things.

Beheld: The Northern Lights from Kotlik, Alaska and learned about Yu'pik and other natives the US has done a good job of screwing over.

Opinion on the CouchSurfing.com Project

This site is a hub of my life without being the center of my life. I'm not sure why I didn't find out about it earlier nor why someone didn't create it earlier. Now that it's here and I'm here, I keep meeting more and more interesting people all over the world. They are my type of world explorers too. The kind who love life and love people.

I have met Rich in NYC at the Revival. We had a very short but thus interesting chat on photography. Then I found out that he is the city ambassador from DC, where my parents live. So I plan to see him there in late July, get to know him better and take a lot of pictures. This ref will be soon updated :-)

It's pretty hard to get to know Rich without loving him (unless you're our landlord Steve.) Rich is smart and loves to talk about science and current events, he's a party-man, and he is suprisingly self-aware. He truly loves traveling and couch surfing. He's not exactly self-effacing, but he is always ready to admit fault if and when it is due and is incredibly receptive to suggestions (which is a wonderful quality to have when you live in community.) I love him like a brother.

Rich is friendly, responsible, a great cook, and is full of interesting information. Most of all, he's always looking for nice little things to do for people, which makes him both a great housemate and host. Plus, he's just about the most committed couchsurfer you'll ever meet and has a true traveller's spirit.

Rich knows a thing or two about quite a few things. I enjoyed sharing ideas and perspectives about travel, CS, philosophy, bunnies, geek stuff... and most of all, his time in Antarctica. I've always wanted to go to the North and South poles and Rich is a wealth of knowledge in that dept. He's worked in Antarctica and was happy to give a "teach, learn, share" presentation so that we could all learn how to get there too! And, ask him to see his cool time lapse photography. Richard rocks!

I`m sure that Richard is just one of the greatest participants of CS. If he can`t host you, he`ll definitely help you out by suggesting people who can. That was also my case - when I first got to D.C. he helped me to find a host. The second time, while coming back home to Latvia, I stayed with Rich himself. Although I stayed only for a day, it was pretty cool to meet his housemates and to see their daily life. Will never forget the run with the bags through the city to the airport :) But, yeah, thanks Richard! This community works because of people like you and sorry that it took me ages to write this...

Thanks so much for your hospitality Rich. I had a great weekend and it was cool to meet your parents and friends from work. I'll definately keep in touch with where I am on my travels.

Richard hosted us on short notice, fed us well and gave us a comfortable place to sleep... didn't get to talk with him much, but he seemed like a real genuine guy.

Richard is unique and I don't say that very often, but it's in a good way. He has been to those places that most people don't go to. He's open to trying something new.

He lived in Antarctica!!!! That should say something. Organized a great dinner outing, is lots of fun to talk to, and is full of good stories.

I sat next to him in a meeting :-) and we all went out party in RCA! followed with some sight seeing, dinners and another parties..hehe! I really enjoyed conversations with Rich (love his laughing! it's kind of laugh that also makes me laugh too) :-) can talk to him about nearly everything from politics to "how popcorn pops"! (LOL) We share same interest in photography too which is great. I definitely enjoyed hanging out with him.

Rich and I worked together at McMurdo Station for a summer. He's a great guy to hang out with, good conversationalist, with an easy laugh, many idea and experiences (not to mention photos and videos) from around the world to share. A thoughtful person, but doesn't take himself too seriously and can be found, for example, running around in costume bunnyrabbit ears at all hours of the morning. I'm sure he'd be a consummate host, and a very considerate and fun guest. If I ever have a couch, he'll be welcome to surf it. :)
