Couch Available: Definitely! Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 2
Shared Sleeping Surface: No Shared Room: YesWe have a bunkbed in our room. We are on the bottom, and you would be able to sleep on top. Also, there is plenty of camping on the glacier behind the station. We used to live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan close to Central Park and next door to the Museum of Natural History. The picture above is us sitting on our old futon/couch.
Currently we are living at Palmer Station in Antarctica. If you can get here, we'll find room for you to couchsurf.
Otherwise, we REALLY despise cigarettes.
Below are the rules we used in NYC to make the best of being CS hossts.
Our work schedules are flexible and unconventional so weekdays or weekends are fine. We have blankets, pillows, and towels for our guests.
Since our apartment is small (less than 350 square feet or 34 square meters), 3-4 nights is pretty much the max... unless we like you and you don't mind us. We assume NYC is popular because we get a ton of requests. Please be patient.
We will not reply to your email if
you ask to stay with us tonight

From Tom Kaeser Neuchatel, Switzerland Oct 26 Positive I really enjoyed staying with them in march in NY, they are interesting and open minded people. Their flat is so well located, very nice and very new york style ;)
From Kelly Ryan Pittsburgh, United States Aug 26 Positive They were fantastic to host! They are a great couple and very comfortable to talk to. You know when you meet somebody and it's just strange how strange things in common overlap. This was them. I hope to see you guys in Antarctica, I'm still working at it. if not perhaps it's a pool party at the Brennan's. strange. Keep in touch you two..
From Damien McCarroll Gothenburg, Sweden May 28 Positive Alex and Elizabeth kindly found time to host us, despite being extremely busy, for two days in their apartment in NYC. As we were also incredibly busy, we didn't get nearly as much time to see them as we would have liked. That said, we enjoyed our time there immensely. Alex and Elizabeth are open, friendly, intelligent people who are great hosts and great to talk to. If you get the chance, host them! Good luck in Antarctica guys - we leave you with a quote from one of Damien's favourite TV shows ('Red Dwarf'), a little advice on what to do if marooned in a frozen wasteland with other researchers: 'Captain Oates was a prat. If that'd been me, I'd have stayed in the tent, whacked Scott over the head with a frozen husky, then scoffed him along with the last packet of instant mashed potato'.
From Steven and Helleke Utrecht, Netherlands May 21 Positive Alex and Elizabeth are great! We've got a so much better view on how living in NY is like. And what a Jackrabbit looks like ;). Elizabeth, if you ever want to show Utrecht to Alex, please come and stay with us. We would love to host you! We wish you both a great time at/in/on (?) Antarctica and thanks again for hosting us. It was real nice meeting you!
From Camilo Flores Popayan, Colombia May 18 Positive Elizabeth is a really intelligent person, easygoing generous and fun. She is the one who told me about the couchsurfing project!!I hope I can meet her again and also meet her boyfriend and her family.
From Alex and Nick Perth, Australia Apr 29 Positive Elizabeth and Alex are a super nice duo. It's really awesome that they offer their flat up to travellers on such a regular basis. It's a really nice brownstone in a cool area and I'm glad we got to spend some leisure time around Central Park. Alex and Elizabeth are great hosts, they are very laid back and accomodating. If you stay, ask Alex to play some of his collection of old country/bluegrass music. It's cool! Hope to see you guys in Australia one of these days!
From Nicole Taylor Auckland, New Zealand Apr 15 Positive Thanks to Alex and Elizabeth we had an amazing time in New York. Their hospitality was unprecedented. We really are truely indebted. We hope to see you in NZ soon (we are hoping we have sold you guys on the sheep farm idea) or elsewhere in the world!
From Mark Lodge London, United Kingdom Apr 13 Positive Staying with Alex and Elizabeth felt like being at home from home. They are very easy-going and at the same time totally focussed and dedicated to their shared travel plans, life philosophy and political views, which all made for great conversation, enhanced by a couple of Belgian beers! Looking forward to hosting them back in London soon..
From Tracy H. Fort Worth, United States Apr 13 Positive Rachel convinced me to couch surf in 2006, and my first experience was at Alex's place in New York. I have been hooked on the idea ever since.
From Roman Rossmann Cologne, Germany Apr 3 Positive What can i say, Elisabeth and Alex are pretty much the best hosts you can get. it felt so good to stay at their apartment, which is pretty small, but in such a perfect neighbourhood, awesome (next to central park, subway access, nice buildings...). And the couch is unbelievable comfortable.
Thanks again, these two guys will always have a place to stay in germany!
From Gilles K. Neuchatel, Switzerland Apr 1 Positive We had an amazing time in NYC staying with Alex and Elizabeth. They made us feel at home and are very nice people. We're waiting for you in Switzerland ;-)
From Becky Mulkern Conway, United States Feb 18 Positive Alex and Elizabeth came to stay with me for a weekend....they were great, I didn't want them to leave!! They are welcome anytime. I hope we meet again in our travels.
From Жако - Jaco - جاكو Saranac Lake, United States Jan 21 Positive Alex & Elizabeth stayed three nights here and were very gracious guests.
It's always nice to host people who themselves are experienced hosts as they know how to occupy a space without filling it. As a bonus, they helped with dishes, brought exotic beer, and ate my bland cooking uncomplainingly.
Hope our paths cross again in the future!
From David Kirchner Jeju City, South Korea Dec 25, 2007 Positive Elizabeth and Alex were amazing hosts. They're intelligent, interesting, involved people. They made me feel right at home and gave me some great transportation and food tips. They're great human beings and great hosts and you won't regret a single moment that you spend with them.
From Genevieve Baglio Walla Walla, United States Dec 16, 2007 Positive I'm so sad that I didn't get to spend more time with Alex and Elizabeth! I managed to surf their couch on the two days that they both had to work/go to school for some seriously long hours and barely got to chat with them. However, the time I did spend with them proved that they were two kind, interesting and adventurous people! Plus Alex explained about iron and bacteria in the ocean, which I loved. Head our way when you leave NYC guys!
From ANNECECHA Lyon, France Nov 27, 2007 Positive My boyfriend and me stayed two nights at their place. They are really nice and easygoing personns. We have shared a part of their life in NYC, and eat in a fabulous Indian restaurant with them.
From Tim Boler London, United Kingdom Nov 19, 2007 Positive We manged to squeeze into the very hectic but extremeley interesting lives of Elizabeth and Alex for two nights while in New York. We got to spend quite a bit of time talking but not that much chance to hang out in the city because they were busy with work. Can't wait to hear about the next stage in their life and their goal of conquering Mt Kilimanjaro. Always welcome in London or wherever we are.
From Pierre Yves Langlois Lille, France Nov 11, 2007 Positive I surfed the alex and elisabeth's couch for 2 nights in NYC and can say this couple is very nice.
I felt very confortable and free...
good luck for you and welcome anytime in Lille...
bye
From Melanie Turleque Tignes, France Nov 8, 2007 Positive Alex and Elizabeth are a sweet couple. They made our stay in New York so easy ! We hope to be able to return the favor and welcome then in the Alps or in Paris ! Good luck for Alaska !
From Peter Lerchbaumer Zweinitz, Austria Oct 14, 2007 Positive Alex and Elizabeth hosted me for one night in Oct 07. Since it was my first experience in CS I was really curious about how it will work out... and it was really great. Just one thing: If you are from central Europe do not trust too much their understanding of a really good beer :-) Thanks for the short but really nice time at your place. And, for sure, you are very welcome to stay at my place whenever you should come to visit Austria.
From Emma Bergström Wuolo Gothenburg, Sweden Oct 5, 2007 Positive We stayed with Elizabeth and Alex for two nights in October 2007. They are very friendly, interesting and easy going. They also did a great job making us feel welcome and really opened their home to us. We got a lot of help with where to find the best books, clothes and even the best cheese (don't miss Zabar's if you surf with them). As we've said earlier: you guys are extremely welcome to surf with us anytime!
From Marek and Eva Stepan Prague, Czech Republic Sep 2, 2007 Positive I would like to say that Alex and Elizabeth was the one of the nicest people we met thru CS! I cannot find words even in Czech! We had lot of speech about everything interesting we where on dinner we where in museums together! Alex and Elizabeth please if you come to Europe make few time for Prague and for us two! We would like to see you again and return you all the hospitality we received in NY!!
Look at our photos to meet Alex and Elizabeth!
From Peter Hagelin Stockholm, Sweden Aug 17, 2007 Positive We stayed with Elizabeth and Alex for two nights in May -07. As this was our second experience of CS we haven’t much to compare to, but GREAT is the least we can say about our hosts. They are both really nice, friendly, interesting and very easy to get along with, hospitality at it’s best! They also took us to really nice restaurants and gave us useable tips of different things that we were looking for. Thanks again!
You’re welcome to our home in Stockholm anytime!
From Blaine and Bethany Franger Hood River, United States Aug 1, 2007 Positive My sister and I surfed with Alex and Elizabeth and they were wonderful hosts. Really cool, down to earth people who were a joy to be around and very hospitable.
From jeanny*daniele Rome, Italy Jul 10, 2007 Positive thankyouthankyouthankyou! No other host could be better for our first experience as guests. Every moment spent with Alex and Elizabeth was precious and delightful, we only regret it was too short. They welcomed us heartily and instantly made us feel at home. Sharing plans and ideas with them, we had the chance to learn about California, in addition to New York, enough to feel a sudden urge to drive its roads. They were always very careful and participating, exactly the kind of people you'd wish to meet along your way. Can't wait to have them with us, to show them a bit of our sunny lands, like the ones they belong to.
From Mallory Nezam Los Angeles, United States Jun 6, 2007 Positive I know this is a year late, but thank you SO MUCH for making our stay possible and wonderful! You two were the perfect hosts!
From Deanne Coffey Australind, Australia May 3, 2007 Positive Alex and Elizabeth were spectacular... more than that they gave us our first and only wdding present and even took the effort to sneak it into our bag as a surprise
they are fabulous hosts and this proves as they have hosted many surfers in their short stint in the community
brilliant conversations and a really positive yet different look at life
host them if you can and count yourself lucky to be hosted by them
cant wait for there trip downunder
we will def keep in touch
From Jared Riggs Denver, United States Apr 25, 2007 Positive I stayed with Liz and Alex in Oct. of '06 and despite their tiny little apartment, I felt extremely comfortable! Two extraordinary people that have had a huge impact on my involvement in CS. I am eternally indebted to them!
From MARKO04 Berlin, Germany Mar 24, 2007 Positive The trip to NYC was a birthday surprise present and we did couchsurfing for the first time. Alex and Elizabeth are the best hosts we could imagine - friendly, warmhearted, interested. We will always remember the rain running through the Central Park and museum visiting in the neighborhood. Thanks for fake-meat-meal in the village. See next year in Berlin!!
From Nicole Sanderson Tucson, United States Mar 20, 2007 Positive Alex and Elizabeth are very giving people who live simply and admirably and lovingly. They let Kyle and I come and go at all hours. I regret not having more time to hang out and learn about these wonderful sweet folks.
Thanks guys!
From Dirk Jung Eppelborn, Germany Feb 28, 2007 Positive If NY would be a warmer place. Alex and Elisabeth are very nice guys. They are interested in so many things and have always a topic you can talk about with them. They have really good views and we enjoyed the time we spent with them. You feel like home at their apartment and they are very considerately. I hope to see you again.
From TheJDMBA London, United Kingdom Feb 9, 2007 Positive Superlative couchsurfing hosts - we couldn't have asked for better company. Alex and Elizabeth are both incredibly bright and fun to be around. Their apartment is cozy, complete with a mantlepiece soapdog, and comfortable. Alex and Elizabeth were very accomodating in connection with our sizeable luggage and odd theatre-ticket timing. We ended up trading some tips about interesting places to go in New York, and they recommended to us a restaurant with great food and organic wine where we had the pleasure of their witty & jovial company (sorry you weren't available for breakfast, maybe next time we are in Manhattan!). We wish you guys even more success in the future and hope that we can help them out if they are ever in London (or, when we finally get our place, the Amalfi coast in Italy). We really enjoyed the bagels and the rest of our stay, and you will continue to be an inspiration for us to improve our well-being! (Remember guys - DOCG = easy way to usually identify decent to great italian wine).
From Daniel Maurath Columbus, United States Dec 15, 2006 Positive They were excellent hosts. I felt very at home and comfortable. Very easy to talk to and impossible not to get along with. I regret not having been able to spend more time with them. An incredible first couch-surfing experience.
From Tiff and Nick N-S.C. Peterborough, Canada Dec 2, 2006 Positive This was our fist couchsurfing experience and we don't see how it could get any better!! We were only there for 1 night, but somehow slept twice on their couch!
Hospitable, Generous and Likeminded folks to boot!
Thanks again!
Hopefully we'll see you up North sometime in the future!
Tiff and Nick
From Elly Van Eeghem Gent, Belgium Nov 12, 2006 Positive Alex and Elisabeth were my first hosts ever...I will never forget their warmth, openness, confidence and will to explore.
From Nathanial Hatwell Johannesburg, South Africa Nov 12, 2006 Positive Healthy, outsidish (if thats a word), do anything for you type guys!
From REUBEN Vancouver, Canada Oct 15, 2006 Positive These guys obviously don't need more references. You should know that they host CS'ers like the dickens, so you'll be very lucky to get a spot in this fantastic couple's life. They are fascinating and inspiring, and have opened our first-timer eyes to the world that is COUCHSURFING with much grace and charm. (Broke us in easy)
From Lindsey Franger San Diego, United States Sep 16, 2006 Positive What everyone else said is true...Alex and Elizabeth are fabulous people! During our surfing experience with them, I learned about phytoplankton, modern stint technology, unique travel adventures, the list goes on... And they have a super cool place right downtown Manhattan!
From Rachel Payne Lancaster, United States Sep 5, 2006 Positive Alex and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts for first-time CSers! My friend was unsure about the whole CS thing, but after our great experience in NYC with our fellow ethnic Californians, she felt confident to stay with people in Europe and we ended up spending a fantastic 2 months staying with 12 other CS and HC hosts. We couldn't have done it without Alex and Elizabeth's generous hospitality and encouragement at the start of our trip, though. They sold us on the CS mode of travel for life!
From METAMATIK Paris, France Aug 4, 2006 Positive More than hosts, friends! After being hosts for several fellow CSers, I think our first "guests" experience couldn't possibly have been better than with Alex and Elizabeth. They are both so friendly, trustful, helpful and genuinely interested about meeting people that it was a great pleasure spending those few days with them! Guys, see you in Paris, whenever -- and thanks again for the books ;)
From Craig Bantz Minneapolis, United States Jul 27, 2006 Positive Extremely generous people who prove that true kindness can still be found. I highly recommend anyone visiting the area spend some time getting to know them. Thanks once more for all of your warmth and hospitality.
From Nina Budinger Stuttgart, Germany Jul 22, 2006 Positive Running and Trader Joe's loving Californians. Alex and Elisabeth are super hospitable, help- and trustful people and my bf and I had the chance to spend 4 nights in their studio. They are very interseted in other cultures and hold good views. Supplying us with directions, maps and plenty of useful tips, the Rockefeller observation deck promoters ;) enriched our stay in NYC. It's no wonder so many people wanna couchsurf with that likeable couple. Hope you guys will like your new place and that we keep in touch. See ya in Germany, Hawaii or where ever!!!
From Kanoa * Hawi, United States Jul 19, 2006 run run run. Alex and Elizbeth stayed with me for several days. They are absolutely fantastic and I wish they were my housemates or nieghbors. They are fun, open-minded and exude a genuine interest in being alive.
From JC San Francisco, United States Jul 19, 2006 Perfect Couchsurfers. Couchsurfing.com is a great idea because of surfers like Alex and Elizabeth. They are easy going, interesting and thoughtful.
From Georg Sonja Vienna, Austria Jul 19, 2006 Hope we stay in touch! If you don't like small talk, stay with/host this wonderful and easygoing couple. We loved it to spend time with these guys and hope to meet them again.
From MINTTI Helsinki, Finland Jul 19, 2006 Couple CSing! Alex & Elizabeth were the most hospitable and relaxed hosts. I wish our schedules would've allowed us to spend more time together, staying on their futon in their small (yet cozy and extremely beautiful) appartment was great. And their hand soap smells really good, I brought a bagful back to Finland! :)
From Emanuel Taranu Saint Louis, United States Jul 19, 2006 Part of a Perfect Trip. Others have left such well spoken reviews all I can think to say is Alex and Elizabeth provided the perfect stay and they made our trip possible. To share their living space so is really something generous. I only regret not being around the apartment enough to get to know them better. We won't forget you guys and hope to be back to NY soon.
From Che-Jong Hsu Taipei, Taiwan Jul 19, 2006 Great couple. Alex and Elizabeth are super great host. They show us some real America life. Alex is a great runner. We really enjoy with them. Thanks!
From Bron and Dave Simpson Balgowlah, Australia Jul 19, 2006 A wonderful couple! Thanks Alex and Liz for a fantastic last few nights in NYC. We loved staying with you and having some great discussions. The couch was very comfy and we loved the apartment . . shame you have to move out! Thanks again. |
