Dear CouchSurfers,

Wonderful adventures led some CouchSurfers to finding a gorgeous Kiwi house in the heart of one of New Zealand's greatest regions. Things couldn't be off to a better start. The internet is connected and all you can hear is the clacking of keyboards. Around sunset there is usually a guitar being played, food being cooked, and laughter being heard. Then they get back into work and continue crossing things off of the to do lists, late into the night. Local CSers have come to the rescue, helping them take care of the garden, bringing food and coffee, and most importantly, getting them out of the house from time to time to see the beautiful surroundings.

So you might be wondering, what are they doing at 22 The Cliffs, Nelson, New Zealand? During the time here they have managed to create an environment that is both conducive to work and also to deep conversations. They are learning how to communicate effectively and work together towards this beautiful project. They are improving the world little by little, or one couch at a time.

Watch them work!

You can spy them:

What have they done so far?

In just one short week they have accomplished:

  • A new and easier to understand welcome page
  • Bugs are being removed at an amazing rate!
  • Almost all of the broken or invalid cities and provinces have now been fixed!
  • The translations are also working now, woohoo!
  • The CouchSurfing Magazine is in the works. Now accepting submissions.
  • The CouchSurfing Phone Network: You'll be able to call a local number while traveling and request emergency couches. It's revolutionary and it's coming soon!
  • The CS Wiki is growing fast, it has been redesigned and integrated more efficiently, minus the confusing parts. Some of the newest CouchSurfing Projects, such as the Guide, are entirely wiki-based.
  • Expanded Organization Structure. If you want to volunteer, please find your place within it, or use this page. We need your expertise!
  • Soon, a new logo for CS, and we need graphic designers.
  • Many other minor adjustments all over the site
  • A more complete list of technical stuff that has been done

WOW! If they've been able to accomplish this in a week, imagine what they can accomplish in the next five months of focused work!

You can Participate

Can you come here and help lend a hand for a few weeks? Can you mail the CSC participants some food? Can you send them a postcard with some words of encouragement? It's the holiday season and they are away from their families. They really need some love from CSers!

Also, they need bikes so that they can go and buy groceries (and go to the beach from time to time). Can you lend them one? They promise that they'll take good care of it <wink, wink>.

But, they REALLY NEED you!

For all of this to work, they need your help. Imagine 10+ people working on CS, day and night at the CSC. They are working for free (for you, for all of us) because they believe in this project. We need to feed them and provide for their basic needs. If those are covered, we can keep them focused and motivated. Without food, electricity, internet and a roof, they probably couldn't do the amazing work they are doing!

But of course, they really need some money immediately so that they can get some food and pay their internet bill.

PLEASE, donate what you can! Thank you in advance!

The House

Here's a tour of the CSC last Sunday while everyone was doing weekly house chores: CSC NZ Sunshine Tour

Did you know that this house has six couches? Perhaps you would like to come and surf one?

We promised the house owner that we'd help him sell this house: anyone interested?

Who's Here?

The New Zealand CouchSurfing Collective Crew is currently 6 members strong: Steve, Kasper, Leo, Elsa, Joe and Casey, for now. More arriving weekly. We might have to get additional locations nearby. More on that soon.
