We have a special server for running ruby/python/whatever apps that use the couchsurfing data. One of the first first such app will be a RAGI/asterisk-based Phone Network for CS:

You could help us with that, or start your own initiative using the CouchSurfing API. There are a number of feature requests and ideas on the [bugtracker] and under Requests for Enhancement and Feature requests

The main site will likely remain in PHP for at least a year or two. It is surprisingly cleanly coded.
