FOAF

After the enhancement has been clearly articulated, and all affected portions of the website have been identified, you may try to persuade a developer to implement it. After implementation it will be deployed somewhere, but not necessarily to the main website.

FOAF, or the Friend of a Friend project aims to create a "web of machine-readable pages describing people, the links between them and the things they create and do".

FOAF is based on RDF, a complete and complicated framework. FOAF RDF can then be exported in XML and in other formats, so FOAF is not XML.

FOAF is surely an overkill for simple export of data, it would be better to define an ad-hoc simple XML format.

Ad Hoc format is not advisable, maybe XFN, since it is a simpler solution that integrates directly into (X)HTML.

However, FOAF has the advantage to take care of much more than just relationship, implementing different dictionaries.
