Alpha and Beta are going to be spawned off. Some things get checked into the trunk that aren't in alpha or beta.

Git's advantages:

it's trivial to merge back into a branch
you can do "anything"
has multiply history lines

Subversion's advantages:

good for software releases

Moving to Git could be completely transparent for most developers.
