Ilha Grande

The statements and opinions on this page are solely those of its authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of CouchSurfing International.

Ihla Grande is the largest of a group of islands that form part of Angra Dos Reis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Although without any active couchsurfers on the island as hosts, it is well worth breaking budgets a little for the experience of this little piece of paradise!

Boasting a large number of beaches some have been voted amongst the most beautiful in all Brazil. Beach highlights include Dois Rios, Lopes Mendes and Lagoa Azul. Other areas for investigation include the former prison, Aquaduct and the ruins of the Lazereto Leper colony

Camping costs: R$15 per person per night. Hotels cost: R$120 per room per night

Not the most accessible place for people with physical disabilities, as most beaches are mainly accessable by trekking, however there are boat services that drop people of around the island.

Boat over to the island cost R$6 and leaves from either Mangaratiba or Angra and it takes approximately 1 hour and a half. Returns cost the same and also return to the same departure points.

R$20 to travel from Rio de Janeiro Novo Rio Rodoviária to Mangaritiba or Angra and takes approximately 2 and a half hours to get there.

It is an Island, so all food and drink has to be "imported" so everything costs a bit more than on the mainland.
