QuebecThe statements and opinions on this page are solely those of its authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of CouchSurfing International.
Quebec is a province in Canada. Its capital is Quebec City. The principal big cities in Quebec are Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivieres, Gatineau and Rimouski. Montreal and Quebec City are the two biggest cities and usually, tourists stick to them and miss some of the nicest parts of Quebec Province. Indeed, it really worth it to see Quebec off the beaten track and to visit its charming villages and their welcoming inhabitants.
Quebec RegionsCantons-de-l'Est (Eastern Townships) TipsActually, there are few Couchsurfers in the different regions of Quebec Province, mainly because CouchSurfing is not yet really know outside big cities. But the more Couchsurfers visit these places, the more CouchSurfing will be know there and get new hosts. If you don't find a host before you go, ask in the differents groups of towns with a lot of members (Quebec, Montreal, Sherbrooke, etc.) if someone knows someone who could host you in the region you would like to go. It is likely that someone will have family or friends in that place and will be able to get you in touch with them. Otherwise, if you feel a little bit adventurous, don't hesitate to go even if you haven't find a host and once arrived, go in public spots such as cafés, little restaurants, craft shops, parks, etc. and ask for information, tell about your trip, explain what is CouchSurfing and ask the people if they know someone who could host you for a night or a place where you can pitch your tent for free. There are a lot of chances you will get invited and that CouchSurfing will get a new member in this region. Inhabitants of little villages are usually very friendly, like to speak with travellers and are proud to give you a visit of their village. Though, make sure you have a little bit of money in case you don't find any host for the first night! LanguageBe prepared to read and hear French everywhere, as it is the first language of this province. You won't have much problems with English in Montreal and Quebec City, but locals in many regions often don't speak nor understand English. Having a little knowledge in French or a basic phrase book could be useful. Furthermore, making some effort to try speaking French is generally really appreciated by francophones, even if your French is not so good. Many people will be more welcoming with you if you do so. But don't let the language stop you to go off the beaten track, there is always a solution for communication!
Useful factsThe drinking age in Quebec Province is 18 years old. Expect to be required to present proof of age before entering a club or bar.
People and cultureWhen receiving a service in a restaurant, hotel, or taxi you will be expected to include a tip. In restaurants, for example, you should include about 15 % of the cost of your meal. Typically servers are paid reduced wages. TransportationFoodThe national meal in Quebec Province is the "poutine", which consists of French fries, brown sauce and cheese.
