Sibiu is one of the largest cities in Transilvania, Romania with a population of about 160,000. It straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the river Olt. It is the capital of Sibiu County and is located some 282 km NW of Bucharest.

It is one of the most important cultural and religious centres in Romania as well a major transportation hub in central Romania. The city used to be the centre of the Transylvanian Saxons in Romania until World War II.

Sibiu was designated European Capital of Culture for the year 2007 together with Luxembourg.

AEROPORT.

If you're not coming to Sibiu from another Romanian town, plane is an excellent option, as there are direct connections to Sibiu International Airport from many European cities. Carpatair, Transylvania's largest airline, offers daily connections to Munich, Bergamo and Treviso, and connections three times a week to Bologna, Verona, Rome, Paris and Stuttgart. TAROM, Romania's national carrier, flies from Sibiu to Munich, Wien and Bucharest. Talks have started with the airlines operating the existing flights in order to introduce more flights and raise the capacity of the planes. The first measures to extend and modernise the airport are underway.
