Wikitravel

copied from User talk:Guaka

What is the status of your talks with the founder of wiki travel about the integration with cs.This came to mind after seeing the [Paris]--Navinkurian2002 13:58, 16 August 2006 (EST)

We had an interesting conversation. Evan mentioned OpenID, which is already used by Wikitravel, and which will be used here very soon (and then later on CS.com as well, hopefully). Evan was very positive about the idea to put Wikitravel text in CS. I started working on that. You can already see a little bit of that here. Probably wikiguide.html will be up sometime today as well. There I fetch information from this Wiki, Wikitravel and the Hitchhiking Wiki. See also Wiki integration. Guaka 14:06, 16 August 2006 (EST)
I feel that fetching text from other wikis is not really what CS is about. I would not like to see all the information on all the cities on CS - I think we should have just one source of information. Is it possible to link to a different Wiki on some subject? Wikitravel integration on CS sounds good but not in the CS wiki - i think. The CS wiki should be CS subject based, other wikis are there for other reasons... Wikitravel would be nice in the profile if people write about places or the locations i've visited - that could have a link to wikitravel but not to a page on CS wiki. Or is there anything that i do not see that would make it more useful to have wikitravel information copied to our wiki? --Bontour 14:40, 16 August 2006 (EST)
I agree! But...
Just check http://couchsurfing.com/wikiguide.html?location=Paris :) I think it's actually in line to what you are saying. Feedback is very welcome!
TODO:
  • images,
  • nice templates for the wiki, so that users can put their CS profile in the city page or something
  • anything you come up with (and I agree with :)
Also, maybe some more people can be informed about this (on some group? or individually? people who showed interest in travel guides on CS?)
So they can come here and give comments and feedback as well.

World66

I think the page http://couchsurfing.com/wikiguide.html?location=Paris is really useful for couchsurfers, moreover it respects the copyright of the other wikis from which it aggregates information, actually i think this is precisely one of the intended "unexpected wanted effects" you might want when you release content under a permissive licence like those wikis do.
I would suggest to check also world66 as an additional source of information.
See world66 copyright, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0 Licence. http://www.world66.com/about/copyright_policy
As an example the page about Paris on world66 is at http://www.world66.com/europe/france/paris/ I think the subsections are really informative. We might even think of adding in an automatic way a link to a search for <CITY> on couchsurfing in the <CITY> page of world66. --Phauly 15:34, 16 August 2006 (EST)
A wikitravel/world66 integration so that the wheel does not have to be rewritten and members can just add to the travel guides already there. also a "Best of" and "To avoid" section as suggested on this [http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=3243

deleted tips section

Hey guys I restored this page and did a few edits adding some things and cleaning it up. Next time some one decides to spam a page do not delete it immediately, look at previous versions to see if there was once meaningful content there. --Metal.lunchbox 22:24, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

How to organize guide

Hey guys I've noticed that the guide has alot of problems in general and I would like to suggest a few ideas:

  1. We have no need for state categories and articles to serve merely as containers for US cities, cities in US should all have be in United States category. Some rural states however may have their own articles if motivated Couchsurfers want to create them
  2. Country articles should be moved to categories with content of the articles added to make for easier updated in of articles list in the country
  3. same for Regions
  4. a standard template for cities and countries would be nice, I'll see what I can put together
