What an incredible island.

Fortunately for anyone venturing to Tasmania the State has tried to anticipate your every need from backpacking and hiking through to 5 star grace and style.

Over the coming months this wiki page will come to life offering links to sites and local info that can only be presented by locals who know, and are passionate about their home state.

We are also presenting general information links to help you have a more informed stay.

Weather in Tasmania is highly unpredictable. Always check the current weather forecast. Tasmanian newcomers either learn to love it, or never love it.

The best way to prepare for a Tasmainian visit is to prepare your pack to cover plus 35C to minus 15C and thats in summer !!

The Tasmanian CS community is slowly devloping, with informal events happening from time to time. You're most likely to find spontaneous gatherings if you check out the most active local group.

Can I start an event/Get-together or meeting too?

If you have been inspired by a great dinner / get together, here's how you can start your own:

  1. Decide on a venue. Preferably within the reach and budget of a starving traveler.
  2. Find room in your busy social life.
  3. Set a date and time. Tuesdays to Thursdays are best. Fridays and weekends people usually have other plans. Make it about 1-2 weeks in advance.
  4. Make a reservation for 5 to 10 people.
  5. Find out if there are any strings attached: ie corkage, minumum spend, what happens if more people arrive, etc.
  6. Create a new meeting.
  7. Post to the Tasmanian CS Socials and Gatherings Group, linking to the meeting page.
  8. Arrive early at the restaurant: sort out how the bill will be paid, check the venue, make sure your mobile phone is on!
  9. Keep track of what everyone is ordering so that the bill is easier to sort out.
  10. Have a great night!

Knowing how to call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency can be the difference between life and death. The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right emergency service to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life threatening or emergency situations. Calls to Triple Zero (000) are free and can be made from mobile phones, home or work phones or pay phones.

How to make a Triple Zero (000) call

There are a few simple steps to take when making a Triple Zero (000) call:

  • Stay calm and call Triple Zero (000) from a safe location.
  • A Telstra operator will answer and ask you if you need Police, Fire or Ambulance. Say the service that you require. If you are calling using a mobile or satellite phone the operator will ask you for other location information.
  • You will then be connected to the nominated emergency service operator, who will take details of the situation.
  • Stay on the line, speak clearly and answer the operator's questions.
  • Give the operator the details of where you are, including street number, name, nearest cross street, and locality. In rural areas it is important to give the full address and distances from landmarks and roads, not just the name of the property.
  • Don't hang up until the operator has all the information they need.
  • If possible wait outside at a prearranged meeting point or in a prominent location for emergency services to arrive to assist them to locate the emergency.
  • If you make a Triple Zero (000) call whilst travelling on a Motorway or on a rural road, identifying the direction you are travelling and the last exit or town you passed through will assist emergency services to correctly locate the incident.

Ambulance Charges

Just one trip in an ambulance can cost between AUD$670 to over $5,000, if an air ambulance is necessary.

Therefore, please check that you have sufficient travel insurance, or you are covered by the Reciprocal Healthcare Arrangement.

Tasmania is the only state that currently has no charges for Ambulance use. see this link for more info

Interpreter / Translator

  • If a person is unable to speak English, they should call Triple Zero (000) from a fixed line, say ‘Police’, ‘Fire’ or ‘Ambulance’. Once connected to the nominated emergency service, stay on the line and a translator will be organised.
