Te Anau

The statements and opinions on this page are solely those of its authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of CouchSurfing International.

The small township of Te Anau at the bottom south west of the country is a great prequel to some of the most dramatic and untouched regions of New Zealand. Fiordland is largely inaccessible, however Milford Sound is a tourist dream land. The road there is considered the most impressive in New Zealand, with a tunnel built through granite rocks in the 1850's and a boat trip on the sound leads a mystical imprint.

Attractions

The Te Anau glow worm caves.
An expensive but pleasurable trip to Doubtful Sounds.
Hiking! The Milford track, Keplar track, Routeburn are just some examples.

Tips

Book accommodation early in summer.
A guided tour bus to Milford Sound is expensive but worthwhile, with a cruise on the sound a must.
Autumn is a fabulous time for colour. Roads may be closed in winter due to snow and ice.
