Basic InformationTrier claims to be Germany´s oldest town (founded 16 BC or even before)! It is located in the beautiful Moselle valley, a famous wine region in Germany. Trier was the capital of the Western Roman empire and since then lots of UNESCO preserved sights are waiting for being visited by you. The famous Porta Nigra, an ancient roman gate which served later also as a home for the Greek anchorite Simeon and as a church is the town´s landmark. Check out the following websites for more information: Trier CS activities and eventsWe have regular meetings in Trier and are active in visiting our CS friends in the region (Luxembourg, Metz, Arlon etc.). PressOur city embassador Sarah gave an interview about couchsurfing. The interview was published in Trier's local newspaper "Trierischer Volksfreund": Media:InterviewSarah.pdf How to get thereThe airport and Ryanair hub "Frankfurt-Hahn" is actually closer to Trier than to Frankfurt ;-). Using "Frankfurt" as a name is just a marketing gag. Bus connections from the airport to Trier:
There is a bus connection from Frankfurt-Hahn to Trier:
Frankfurt Hahn to Trier North :The flibco Bus
in English but not as many offers as Mitfahrgelegenheit: Mitfahrzentrale Railway connections from and to Trier Deutsche Bahn Where to go from TrierLuxembourg, France and Belgium are in less than 100 km. Consider visiting our CS friends in Luxembourg, Metz or Arlon!
Getting around in TrierFinding an apartment/Housing in TrierBest websites: Hunderttausend Volksfreund Wg-gesucht Andy: If you're looking for a flat-share this is usually referred to in small ads as "WG" or "Wohngemeinschaft" in German. The other option is to take advantage of the rush for flats at the beginning of the uni terms - rent a flat yourself and advertise your spare room to the students. If you're lucky you'll get to live with a german, which will force you to pick up the language. I live in Trier-Sud and have never had a problem here - everything is close by, and i can walk to the train station in under 5 mins. One last thing - from what i've been able to tell, when a german flat is advertised for rent the size of the bathroom and kitchen only counts for half, so you will end up with a slightly bigger flat than advertised!
If I work in Luxembourg do I have to pay German taxes?Andy: If you work in luxembourg you pay all your taxes (and SS) in Lux. You will have to register as a resident at the town hall (Rathaus) and provide your employer with a residency certificate (Haushaltsbescheidugung) every year (also available from the town hall). You will can get a german health insurance card from any german health insurance company (highly recommended - if you ever need the doctor it works out much cheaper and easier with a german card) by filling out a simple form and posting it to them.
