About Me

To have great memories and interesting stories to tell when I'm old! To see more of the world (and my own backyard), to eat delicious food near and far, to really live a life that expands my horizons and challenges a few of my boundaries!

The first thing my friends would say is that I am (very) silly. They know I'm a planner, I try to be helpful, I am about my work, I am always moving (dancing while I talk, snapping while I walk). They would definitely say that I love food! I wish I was fluent in French, but haven't done anything about that recently. I enjoy the outdoors (but not things with more than 6 legs) and want to be more adventurous out there (go hiking more, go camping more, try kayaking, etc).

To whom much is given, much is required. I've been fortunate in my life, more so than many people in my (racial) community, and I feel compelled (morally? spiritually?) to give back. It's a good thing I enjoy teaching and black history!

I'm also trying to embrace a "life is short, live it well" philosophy, b/c I don't know if I'll get another chance, and this world is full of so many things to experience and places to go.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

None yet, but I'm nervously and excitedly hoping to get started soon!

I love food - eating it, making it, talking about it, looking at pictures of it. I am (somewhat/very) obsessed with genealogy and like learning and teaching about black history. I am intrigued by architecture, especially Victorian "painted ladies". When I have the time, I read travelogues, mysteries and trashy romance novels. I love Masterpiece Theater on PBS. I am excited by interior decoration and wish I was more of a "maker". I really enjoy being active outdoors, especially hiking.

Music, Movies, and Books

Yeah, I read every single Harry Potter book, and went to see at least 3 of the movies at midnight :) I went through a Sherlock Holmes phase - novels and short stories - and with Robert Downey Jr in the lead, I'm loving the movies, too! I can watch the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean whenever they come on tv. There are a few romance novel series that I love and always come back to. But I can also read and re-read Maya Angelou's autobiographies. I'm all over the place... Music-wise, definitely neo-soul (I know it's a marketing term, blah, blah, blah). Throw in some Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, 90s R&B, and some pop and that's the soundtrack to my life.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The approach to Bermuda - seeing the reefs from the air is absolutely beautiful!

Walking through Westminster Abbey and thinking about how much history that building has seen, and how much of history is literally in its depths - gives me chills!

Teach, Learn, Share

Hmmm...I'm a pretty good cook, so I can show you a few of my favorite dishes. I'm also a genealogist, so I can talk about tracing family history (mostly in an American context).

I'd like to learn more about: sustainable living, herbal medicine/natural healing, Buddhism, French language, and definitely food in other cultures. And frankly, if you're passionate about something, chances are I'll be open to learning about it!
