Just moved to Portland, Oregon Aug '13... Excited about exploring the Pacific Northwest
I am passionate about travelling, meeting new peoples, cultures, places... travelling out of the beaten path and connecting with locals wherever I go... Probably all these are topics in CouchSurfing profiles... but I guess that's why we are all here!
I would define myself as an open-minded person easy-going person. I always try to say YES and step out of my comfort zone, which is where I lived the most awesome adventures of my life. I try not to be afraid or worry about things that are not worth it; most of the things that worry us are really not a big deal... I've learned that over the past few years and I am still learning. Keeping a positive and healthy attitude towards life is much more worth it.
I think life is short, and the world is huge. I enjoy moving around and experiencing different places. I don't like the suburban lifestyle, or just staying always in the same comfort bubble. I might eventually end up in a place/country for the rest of my life, but travelling will always be a big part of my life.
I try to learn from people I meet and from the places I live. I originally wrote this section back in 2008, and I have changed so much since then, so I just updated it. I think travelling, living in different countries, and of course, time, just gives you a new perspective on things. You live, you learn... and certainly, I am more of a well-rounded, well-travelled and specially more flexible individual than when I joined CouchSurfing in my senior year of college... I think that all the good things you do in life end up paying forward, and I just try to help people whenever I can, as I have been helped in so many situations by others.
I believe in having a positive and healthy atttitude towards life; try to make it work and try to be happy wherever you are. We only live once. Happiness is not always doing what you want, but always wanting what you do.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I joined CouchSurfing when I was studing abroad in Mons, Belgium back in 2008. My roommate and I created a joint profile for our dorm rooms; we tried CouchSurfing in Germany for a couple nights as part of our Spring Break trip and it was a great intro to this whole new concept! A few months later, I moved out from Belgium and I spent the summer of 2008 in Berlin. I created my own profile and I was introduced to the local CouchSurfing scene by my neighbor. Since then I've always tried to participate in a way or another, wherever I've lived.
When I came back to my native city of Barcelona for a year, I started attending and also organizing events for the local CouchSurfing community. After a year back home, I moved to Santa Barbara, California in 2009 where I started hosting a lot.
I moved to Portland, Oregon in late summer 2013 and I have been hosting again, and surfing around the PNW as well.
For many of my travels, I have relied on meeting people from CouchSurfing to get a better understanding and experience of the place and I have only had positive experiences, as a host and as a guest.
One of the things that makes me happy is that I have friends that joined CouchSurfing after they saw how well it had always worked for me, and after they met some of my awesome guests and hosts... I always try to introduce my guests to my friends wherever I live, and a few of them have joined CouchSurfing since, yay :)
Since joining CouchSurfing in 2008, I have "surfed" couches, air mattresses, floors, caves, and guests rooms in Germany, France, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, the United States, and Canada.
I have hosted guests in my places in Barcelona, Spain; Santa Barbara, CA and Portland, OR from all over the world.
I also participated in the 2009 Canoe Trip in Hungary, we canoed in the Danube and it was awesome, we had over 70 CouchSurfers from over 20 countries, really cool experience.
I enjoy being in contact with nature, so I am really into hiking, climbing mountains and rock climbing, camping and backpacking, biking, kayaing, surfing, SUPing, scuba diving... anything that's outdoors, either mountains or ocean, makes me happy!
I enjoy spending time with friends and family, eating, cooking, going out... sharing good conversations and good meals! I grew up in Barcelona, a city with a huge theater scene, so I really enjoy going to theater plays, also watching independent movies in small theaters, film festivals, going to museums, reading...
I like cities and smaller towns, you just have to be happy wherever you are and make it work. I'm always down to trying new things, so you can probably interest me in many things!
Because of my education and job, I enjoy learning foreign languages and practicing all the languages I speak, it's also very helpful when travelling and let's me connect more with the local culture.
- film festivals
- outdoor activities
- scuba diving
- rock climbing
Music, Movies, and Books
Many, can't even start a list!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I feel like I always update this section based on my most recent expereinces... these are just a few!
*Greeting a black bear in Yosemite National Park, California, USA. Going to Yosemite in the Winter when nobody was around was just amazing!
*Scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef (Australia), in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) and in Maui (Hawai'i, USA) I am fortunate I got to see some of the best waters in the world.
*Biking and campig in Big Sur, California, USA, with friends Thanksgiving break 2012. Stunning landscape and biking is the best to explore it!
*Running my first (and only) half marathon with two of my best friends in the beautiful Santa Ynez valley in the Santa Barbara Wine Country. Amazing landscape and really cool experience.
*Climbing a few of the volcanoes in the Cascades of Washington and Oregon (USA). Amazing views from the top of Mt. Adams, South Sister and Mount Saint Helens...
Teach, Learn, Share
Always happy to learn anything! I'd love to learn something about your language, and I love teaching my native language: Catalan. I have also taught Spanish, Portuguese and English in the past, so I can always help you with these languages.
I also enjoy eating, tasting and cooking all kind of foods. I'd love to learn how to cook different local dishes; although I'm not a great cook myself, I can offer you a Catalan/Mediterranean meal when you visit, or cook it for you if I'm your guest.
One of my guests came at the time where I was taking my GRE exams, and he was great in math/stats and I wasn't at all, he ended up helping me with studying and homework... pretty neat!
I like hearing about peoples trips too, and just talking about our past or future travel adventures. I am intersted in going to Alaska in the summer of 2014, so any tips are welcome :)
