À propos de moi
CURRENT MISSION
To make music for a living.
ABOUT ME
I'm a musician who writes the music, plays guitar, and sings for the band Prayers For Atheists. I'm a socialist, and I'm greatly interested in politics, economics, and most things philosophical. I don't own a car - I either take the bus or ride my bike (though I've had a flat for a couple months that I haven't fixed - LAZY). The idea of somebody getting a tattoo of a moustache is hilarious to me. I think those are the most important things you need to know about me.
PHILOSOPHY
I was a big fan of Camus and Nietzsche (and existentialism in general) for years, but I can say with confidence that I most closely identify philosophically with socialism. I'm not yet sure what kind of socialist, but I do know the following: that Marx was right about a lot, including the tendency toward monopolization of capital; that Marx's ideas on the crisis of overproduction haven't been disproved; that Big Business has a vast and negative influence on the political process, individual freedoms, and the environment; that humankind now possesses the technological know-how and capacity to provide basic necessities for every human on the planet, and that this, not profit, should be the principle around which we organize society; and that mass movements inspired by true, from-the-bottom-up democratic principles have in the past, can today, and will in the future bring about positive social change (humane labor laws, the U.S. civil rights movement, etc.). In a nutshell.
Pourquoi je suis sur Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I think an independent community that's built from the ground up and that's based on the idea of sharing your home and company with trustworthy travelers is creative and fun. I would like to help promote and support DIY communities like this.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I've toured nationally with my band twice, and we've stayed with friends and acquaintances of our singer (who's built an impressive list of contacts from years of touring as a spoken-word performer before the band). So, not only have we saved plenty of money by not staying at motels, but we've also formed plenty of friendships and solidified others. The hospitality we've met on the road has made a significant, positive impact on our quality-of-life on tour.
Centres d'intérêt
True philosophical conundrums like: what is human nature? What are the origins (if any) of the Universe? How could a band like Nickelback ever have become as famous as they are?

Morceaux de musique, films et livres
Nirvana will always be my favorite band. Merely thinking about Kurt Cobain puts me into totally nerdy, fan-boy mode. Bad Brains, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys - not to be a snob or anything, but I specifically love hardcore punk from 1979 to 1983. The "Naked Gun" movies make me laugh until I pee myself, and "Harlan County, USA" is a documentary that affected me deeply. Orwell's "1984," Carl Sagan's "Demon-Haunted World" and "Billions And Billions," and Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series are the best books that have ever been written, period, the end.
Une aventure extraordinaire que j'ai vécue
Seeing an uninterrupted view of the night sky in New Mexico was breathtaking. Thousands and thousands of stars like I had never seen before (having lived only in the heavily light-polluted Massachusetts and Rhode Island). It was the kind of view that clears your mind of everything except the Universe right there in front of you, which pretty much brings you into a direct confrontation with your own mortality. Deep, kid.
Enseignez, apprenez, partagez
1. Do your best to NEVER get sick while you're on tour with your band. Seriously, pump the vitamin C, kids!
2. Also, do yourself a favor and read something by Noam Chomsky. "The Chomsky Reader," "Language and Politics," anything. You'll learn more from that one book than you would from years of watching television.
