About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to profitably distribute computers to as many small businesses and families in the developing world as possible, and particularly in Africa

ABOUT ME

I'm 26 and left California and its beaches, fresh sushi, and perfect weather behind for London, where I've lived just over three years. I love it for its diversity, and its pub culture, and above all for the travel opportunities it affords.

I'm luck to have my own company (www.aleutia.com) and to have been travel to countries in Africa for business trips and conferences.

Writing and photography are my favorite means of self-expression, but only because I lack the funds to express myself through architecture.

I don't blog but document my travels at:

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Pelle the Conquerer, In the Mood for Love, a thousand others. My former flatmate was a Cinema Media Studies major with about 700 art house dvds.

Music: electro, the more minimal the better. Groove Armada, Moloko.

Books: Too many. Recent enjoyable reads from the last few months include Martin Amis' House of Meetings (a wonderful novella), Po Bronson's Bombardiers, Eugenia Semyonovna Ginzburg's Journey into the Whirlwind, and Khaled Hossein's A Thousand Splendid Suns. All splendid books - the kind of voracious literary feast that gets you back into reading. Lucky was I to read them all back to back!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was 18, I was backpacking in Greenland, travelling south from Nuuk with some Swedes by fishing vessels. We stopped in Alluitsup Paa, a fishing village. I'd read about a nearby island Uunartoq, as its hot spring had appeared in Norse sagas. A fisherman took me there and agreed to come by the next day. It was quite small and I pitched my tent right next to the spring, which was maybe 3m across.

The shores of the island were sandy with thin blades of grass poking through like I'd seen on a family holiday in North Carolina. But in the water were large coach-sized ice floes, which was very surreal.

Later that day, a family came by and were surprised to see me. They had some dried fish, which we dipped in seal fat, a staple that is as appetizing as it sounds, and some of my kit kat bars.

It was a very beautiful night and I returned to the village the next day feeling older than my eighteen years.
