ABOUT ME

Anna - 25yo Artist who loves cooking, sharing a meal with people over a glass of wine, listening to some tunes... Grew up in small town NZ where my father was the local vet. I have always loved animals through childhood and have even worked as a dog groomer while at university. At university I studied fine arts - focusing on sculpture and photography. Since uni I have worked for a New Zealand Fashion Designer and then NZ's largest commercial photography rental studio. While traveling I have been inspired to try and make art my fulltime job...

Dan - 26yo Doctor. Quit my job to travel around the world for a while. Probably go back to medicine when we run out of money - maybe Emergency Medicine, Rural General Practice or Palliative Care. Have been getting into my photography while traveling and using Anna's camera. Am semi-obsessed with Fishing, Diving, Freediving, Spearfishing, Surfing i.e Anything sea related. Love meeting people and learning about and from them. It is really a pleasure to do this in a non-medical environment for a while - and will probably help make me a better doctor and person in the long term...

PHILOSOPHY

Trying to work this out is part of the reason we are overseas.

Currently a conglomeration of Eckhart Tolle, Aldous Huxley, Christianity, Buddhism, Atheism, Social justice and so on....

But mainly we just try to be nice to people, generous, have fun and learn to love living.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We are reasonably new to this formalized internet based couchsurfing - although we have been couchsurfing for a while before this...

We see ourselves hopefully meeting some people who we wouldn't otherwise and seeing their versions of places. After six months or so of traveling we are sort of getting sick of being tourists, and want more real experiences of different places and people. We see couchsurfing as another way for this to happen, other than the spontaneous events that happen along the way.

When we eventually have a couch of our own when we return to NZ we hope to be able to host couchsurfers and be able to continue meeting new interesting people from overseas while at home.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

While recently in India we had a great experience of spontaneous couchsurfing. We were on a bus on the way into Delhi and were going to be arriving after dark and staying in the cheapest and most dodgy and unsafe part of town (as is usually the case with the cheap parts of town). Added to this was the fact there were violent city wide protest at the time. En route we got chatting to a couple from Delhi around our age. It was like meeting old friends with easy flowing enjoyable conversation. Having realised where we were planning on staying, they invited us to stay with them, or rather their parents. One night turned into a few days before we had to leave. We had an amazing time and saw a side of life we would never have otherwise. As well as learning a whole lot about being a gracious host. We were so thankful for their generosity and hopefully have started friendships that will be lifelong.

These sort of experiences have happened at various points on our travels, as well as in NZ, and have always been the most memorable and enjoyable experiences we have had.

Music: Have been listening to Cat Power's latest album on repeat for the last few months. Also love James Blake, Janelle Monae, Edith Piaf, The Horrors, The Strokes, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Soundtracks from Wes Anderson Films, The Kinks, Bjork, Velvet Underground, Beach House, Bon Iver, David Bowie, Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens... The list could go on .. Dan likes 90s rap music, jazz, roots/reggae and Jim Morrison.

Movies: We are both huge fans of Wes Anderson. Although he did give us unrealistic expectations of what the trains in India would be like. If you havn't seen the Darjeeling Limited you should! Anna can act out Titanic word for word without the movie on or a script.

Dan - Tried to resuscitate a premature baby girl after a C-Section in Tanzania, Africa, without any resuscitation equipment or help from anyone. Was pretty hectic.

Anna - Helped to rescue a beached baby Minke Whale back in New Zealand when I was little (My Dad was the local vet at the time).
