About Me

Hey there- my name is Annalise! I'm a student in political science/Middle East studies/Arabic angling to practice law. I'm really interested in state surveillance apparatuses and how they affect civil wars and revolutions, particularly in the MENA region. In the meantime, I focus my time on increasing government transparency and accountability in the United States by filing FOIA requests and working with activists through my job. I'm working for a super cool software company called the Pursuance Project, which fills up the majority of my time.

I enjoy rock climbing, kayaking, and backpacking (it's helpful to live next to the Smoky Mountains!). I'd like to say that I'm a good cook, but in reality it's just hours of reading Bon Appetit and aspiring for any of my dishes to look half as good. Hobbies also include crying to Radiohead and reading WaPo until I'm sufficiently depressed about America's political climate. I volunteer with refugees in my hometown and attempt to translate with Arabic for them, which is really, really, really hard when you've grown up in the bible belt.

Also, #ABOLISHICE

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I get to travel frequently for my job, which is super cool. What is not super cool is that I'm terrible at planning things, and will usually forget to book a hostel or hotel and then end up without a place to stay the day before my trip. I'm working on it.

Interests

Last night I cooked seared scallops with a browned herb sauce over polenta, then included a salad with arugula, fresh figs, goat cheese, and prosciutto. Like I said, I read a lot of Bon Appetit. This is a selling point for me.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My father is a pilot, so I grew up flying planes. I probably won't be able to land your Boeing 747 when it starts to take a nosedive, but I'll feel comfortable in a little Cessna.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can try to teach you basic Arabic unless of course you already know Arabic then I'll get really embarrassed and quiet around you if you ask me to speak

Canada, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland
