About Me

delude myself that i dont want to start a PhD any time soon, live in a bunch of countries in the next few years, spend more time in the great outdoors, finish deluding myself, find a cool phd project, save the world

first things first. hi, i'm james, though you may have already got that from the top of the page...

i enjoy loud poppy punk bands, late night explorations, critters great and small (well, mostly small) and the great outdoors. doubly so when these things can be combined with travel. i'm currently putting the science/ecology thing I studied / have done for the last few years on the back-burner to see a bit more of the world before committing myself to 3 or 4 (or 7...) years of phdness and being in one place, although i do enjoy the working in research and am constantly amazed we can make sense of the natural world.

i think its very important to get far out of your comfort zone... so far the ups have more than paid for the downs. i guess travelling is a big part of that.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

unfortunately to date I haven't been in a living situation where I've been able to host, so so far its been surfing and attending events. i will definitely try and bring the hosted-surfer ratio up once this situation changes!

its been great so far!

spend a lot of time seeing bands, reading books, cooking, exploring back streets, hiking (well, would like to do more of that actually), finding out about natural history, and talking rubbish with friends at silly AM

Music, Movies & Books

very much non-exhaustive list time.

music. the descendent, cocksparrer, the clash, the buzzcocks, early ska, bits of metal, older emo-rock bands like jawbreakers, 80s goth, various other things, and recently, hip-hop and electro...

books. 1984, catch 22, farenheit 451, master and margarita, day of the triffids, hunchback of notre dame, etc etc

movies. the boat that rocked, lock stock and two smoking barrels, snatch, up, dr. strangelove, the third man

One Amazing Thing I've Done

cups of tea at 17 000 feet (nepal ain't a bad place at all)

Teach, Learn, Share

the whole being a wildlife biologist thing means i can probably impart some sort of information about how the natural world works, evolution, the reproductive strategies of birds (turns out they are all more or less polyamorous), how to live on not alot of cash, and the like. probably... no promises. also, a pretty handy (vegan) cook, if your keen your keen to swap recipes for local dishes, that sounds great.

Countries I've Visited

Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Morocco, Nepal, Turkey

Countries I've Lived In

Australia, Canada, Germany
