I'm not particularly good at describing myself as I'm quite a complex person. Here's a long list of things about me though that I've added slowly over a few years of nonstop traveling if you're interested in reading forever. It's all pretty outdated:
Here's what this article has to say: www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Smith_(american_musician)
I'm an American vegetarian folk musician exploring the world through and endless concert tour. Forty five countries so far! Here's my website with more info: http://themusicofbriansmith.com
I am a smoker, but I am house trained, meaning I won't smoke in your house if you don't want me to, because I'm not an asshole.
Though my page says I live in Canby, that is just where my parents live/where I grew up because I don't actually have a house or apartment anywhere, so I guess I'm a bit of a nomad.
Also, here's a blog post that Couchsurfing wrote about me, which I think is pretty cool: http://www.couchsurfing.org/news/community/coming-to-europe-the-best-new-folk-music-you-havent-heard-yet - Ah! It's come to my attention that Couchsurfing redesigned their website and took away the blog they used to operate. Shame!
Note: If you really need to get ahold of me, but you're pretty sure I'm not online because I don't have internet when I'm in between places, click here for my phone number.
Since I travel a lot and am asked the same questions everyday, I decided to put together a list of frequently asked questions as a way to avoid the general stuff and move on to more interesting conversations. Hope that's cool/understandable.
Frequently Asked Questions: Where are you from? I grew up in a small town (of 17,000 people) called Canby, Oregon, USA (30 minutes outside of Portland) and then lived in Corvallis, Oregon for four years where I graduated from Oregon State University. I tend to tell people I'm from Portland, since this is a city that people often locate and I was there quite frequently due to my older brother, ex girlfriend, and many friends living there, but I never actually lived in the city myself.
How long have you been traveling for? I arrived in London on August 1, 2012, travelled Europe for two months, lived in Vienna for 4 months (with three weeks of traveling during this time), then moved away on January 25, 2013 and have been traveling nonstop ever since in Europe, South America, and The United States.
When are you going back to the United States? No idea.
Don't you miss home? Sometimes, but I see returning as a bit of an endpoint of my adventures and I don't think that's a reality I'll ever be able to face.
How do you afford to travel so much? by performing music! Not on the street!
Where have you been? This is a long list that I usually don't name off when asked in person, but since this is the internet, here is the list along with when I first visited each place: 1. United States (February 1990) 2. Canada (December 2004) 3. Germany (June 2006) 4. France (June 2006) 5. Austria (June or July 2006) 6. Peru (June 2009) 7. Ecuador (July 2009) 8. United Kingdom (August 2012) 9. Belgium (August 2012) 10. The Netherlands (August 2012) 11. Luxembourg (August 2012) 12. Switzerland (August 2012) 13. Italy (September 2012) 14. Vatican City (September 2012) 15. Liechtenstein (September 2012) 16. Slovenia (September 2012) 17. Croatia (September 2012) 18. Hungary (October 2012) 19. Slovakia (November 2012) 20. I hitchhiked from Pula to Rijeka and ended up getting stuck in Labin for the night requiring me to sleep in the rain in a forest without a tent.
Saw the moonrise over the Black Sea in Odessa with three other Couchsurfers.
Saw the enormous and enormously fast sunset in Playas, Ecuador.
Snorkled alone among a school of thousands of fish on Christmas on Silver Island, Ecuador.
Was chased off 5m a cliff by a pitbull on the way to a concert for hundreds of people in Santiago, Chile, which smashed my guitar among many other terrible things.
Organized a music festival that I operated for four years
Gone on tour a bunch: www.themusicofbriansmith.com/performances
Made a diving catch once in kickball!
I've been traveling the world since August 1, 2012, so I have a ton of stories to share. Ask me about a country in Europe and I'll probably have a story to tell.
