Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm travelling to Canada in June 2016 to start a two-year adventure in the country (thanks to the IEC Working Holiday initiative) and figured Couchsurfing would be a great way to meet some new people when I arrive. I love the concept and the sense of community it provides and would love to host people myself when I return home.

Interests

I've loved football (soccer) since I was a young kid and spent far too much time reading, writing and talking about it. I'm a fan of Arsenal and being English, I also force myself to endure watching us go out of every major tournament in insipid fashion every couple of years.

My other love is film, something I have only recently began to enjoy and experience from a more critical standpoint, and I try and get to the cinema as much as I can. I also take something of an interest in politics (even though it tends to depress me!) and enjoy talking with people about this, that and everything in between.

Music, Movies, and Books

My music tastes vary over time, and quite honestly I enjoy a wide variety of genres from folk to hip-hop to classic rock, but alternative music is predominantly my favourite. The bands I tend to revisit the most are The Stone Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Manic Street Preachers, Crystal Castles, Grimes and Arcade Fire.

I love all sorts of movies although I particularly enjoy coming-of-age films - The Breakfast Club and Dazed & Confused are two of my all-time favourites. Alongside them I'd also rank Jurassic Park, Fight Club, Inglorious Basterds, The Social Network, The Grand Budapest Hotel, This is England, Brooklyn, Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings trilogy up there amongst my favourites.

In terms of TV shows, I can talk for days about Game of Thrones and my other favourites include the likes of House of Cards, Girls and Breaking Bad, as well as some great British comedies like The Thick of It and Extras.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I spent a month in Kenya in 2010 helping out out with schools and community projects, and quite honestly it remains the most fulfilling and enjoyable few weeks of my life. It gave me a taste of travelling and I hope to experience more rewarding ventures in the future.
