Über mich

CURRENT MISSION

My mission is to finally finish school, get a job so I can move back to Egypt, & find the perfect giraffe to take me around the world.

ABOUT ME

I'm a 23-year-old American who loves the world. I am finishing up my training to be a nurse but I want so much more than that. Currently my passions lie in the Middle East, where I lived in Egypt last year for several months & am planning to move back in early 2012 to work in nursing education & community health. I am hugely interested in the NGO-sector & that is where I see my career taking me.

When people ask me things like "what other places in the world would you like to go" "what kinds of cool things have you seen in your travels" or "what was your favorite thing in Egypt", I feel like they are missing the point of what is me. Of course I want to travel & see things in the world, but to me going & living in places is not about some cool, temporary experience that I can have & then come back & live out the rest of my live comfortably in the west. To me traveling is not worth it just to sightsee, but I want to live with people, get to know them, integrate with their culture, & truly see the world from their point of view (so that it becomes my point of view). I don't plan on going through a "phase" of my life where I just travel & settle down, but I legitimately see myself living overseas, most likely in the Middle East, for much of my life.

Aside from that, I do love adventure, being active, being outside, & just being with people. If I can live in each moment, & maximize each encounter with each person that I meet, I feel like I'm doing pretty well.

PHILOSOPHY

I think I covered a lot of this in my about me.

I am determined not to live my life as a bystander- sometimes that gets me too involved, but I'd rather be too involved than not enough. I think that everyone can learn something from everyone else & if you don't believe that then you have a lot to learn. I believe that smiling & laughter is infectious, even to yourself, so if you are feeling sad, smile for a bit & see what happens. I don't take myself too seriously, or anything TOO seriously- I know this is super cliche but I strongly believe that in the end no one makes it out alive, so the bad stuff doesn't REALLY matter unless you let it (& I've been through a lot of bad stuff in my life).

I hate how much bullying is going on today & I think the internet has been both a curse & a blessing. In some ways it has connected the world in an incredible way that no other tool has or could. But in another way it allows people to keep to themselves without ever really having to have any direct contact with anyone else. I think this has made it so that there are a lot of troubled people out there who sit behind their keyboards & take it out on other people, but then no one knows about it & so they are kind of anonymously spreading their problems- it truly can be a silent killer.

Because of this I think it's that much more important to learn about the people you come in contact with. Again, if this gets me too involved sometimes, then so be it, but I would like to think that I can pick up on when someone is having a bad day or going through a hard time & I try to get it out of them, whether subtly or directly, & try to bring them up.

I'm not perfect & neither is anyone else, & I hope that some day people can stop bitching about the little things that don't really matter. One thing that I love about Egypt & the Middle East (which I know applies to a lot of the world outside of the west) is that people have so much less there but are so much happier because they really know what's important, & what that comes down to is relationships. I think life is defined my the relationships in it & anything otherwise isn't really a full life.

Ok, that's enough of my personal philosophy- this is what happens when I have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon, I ramble :)

Warum ich bei Couchsurfing bin

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I am new to couch-surfing but have heard wonderful things & can't wait to try it out both as a host (when I have a proper place) & a guest!

Interessen

People, cultures, language, religions (though I personally am not religious). Film/cinematography. Working/playing with kids. Photography. Gymnastics. Cycling. The water & being in it/on it (I was definitely a fish in my past life), driving boats, waterskiing, canoeing, etc. The Middle East (obviously). International politics & cooperation. NPOs & NGOs. Preventative health care. Global health. Singing at the top of my lungs, playing the guitar (trying). Being silly. Doing handstands in famous places around the world. Breaking social norms. Trying new recipes/cooking. Reading (real, not e-) books. Looking at maps. Eating popsicles (I have an addiction). Learning (in general). Summer camp (I went to/worked at the best one ever for years).
