I'm a French lady living in New Zealand, whose children are now grown.
I have a happy, friendly personality. I really enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and cultural background..
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
As a live-in Nanny, I can find myself free for a few days, even a week or 2 in between jobs, so I enjoy touring around, exploring places I haven't been to before and couchsurfing is a great way to do it.
I've always loved traveling. Thanks to an itinerant sales job I saw a lot of my own beautiful country. I've also lived in Italy briefly, spent some time in England and Wales. I lived 2 yrs in Ireland where my son was born; and many years in New Zealand. I have also visited Belgium, Singapore and Australia.
In the past, I have hosted students from Japan, Thailand and China. The cultural exchange was rewarding and good for my children.
I have met some really awesome and genuinely welcoming people and I would visit them again in a heartbeat. In fact I stayed with one of those 3 times.
I feel a need to add some comments though now that my references show I've had a couple of unfortunate experiences lately. One guy seemed to have an agenda and made daily comments that I deemed inappropriate in a couchsurfing situation. Once I finally said something, he shut down, hardly acknowledged my being there and ended all conversation which made my stay uncomfortable. As the website says it is not a dating site.
A couple of guys insisted I stay as long as I want but then complained how many days I stayed even though I left earlier than originally agreed! Hard to understand.
As a guest, it can be hard to gauge at times what your host prefers in terms of hanging out together. One doesn't like to 'crowd' the host but on the other hand one doesn't want to rudely ignore either. Polite, sociable and considerate are 3 traits of mine I live by and whichpeople have commented on. Each host is different and the same goes for each surfer. I have stayed with 2 school teachers who worked very long hours and were happy for me to do my own thing as they didn't have much free time for socializing; and that was totally fine with me. These teachers work so hard, and well after school is finished, and 7 days a week it seems!
I enjoy meeting people, interesting conversation and a good laugh so I'm definitely happy to spend time with my host, but only as long as I sense that I am not intruding on their time and space. I enjoy my own company as well so, as one of my recent hosts commented I am "very flexible".
I really don't think it's right to lie about what was said and done. One host said he was too busy to host me as such but invited me to stay anyway. He was just closer to where I wanted to be than other offers I had. I actually picked him because I thought we'd get on well, NOT because I was "desperate". But to say "I'm too busy to spend time .." only to later complain in ref that I "didn't socialize" is confusing.
I'm always happy to lend a hand where needed.
I enjoy cooking, especially Asian, and am always very happy to create a nice healthy meal for my host and usually volunteer my help with clean up as well.
The ONLY time I offered to cook but didn't end up doing so, was at a house infested with the biggest cockroaches I'd ever seen and I left 3 days before my scheduled departure. They were everywhere.
Sadly that ref is filled with nothing but lies. ONLY ONE rotten stake broke from the weights of tomatoes as his plants had a lot of fruit. Host very quickly pushed the stake back into the ground and played the whole thing down. Days later he complained that I broke "two stakes"! Not only was I MORE THAN HAPPY to pick his tomatoes, but I chatted with him the whole time! Why would I begrudge picking tomatoes when I actually love pottering around outside? I had nothing but praise and admiration for his awesome garden.
I trust smart people will see that his ref doesn't fit with what other hosts experienced of me and see it for what it is.
Traveling, hiking, cooking, gardening, photography, technology, arts and crafts to name a few..
Music, Movies, and Books
I love a wide range of music expect perhaps country and heavy metal.. I love movies; especially comedies, dramas, true stories, a good thriller but not scary stuff. Not really into sci-fi.
