I like some fiction like Rowling, the occasional stand-out novel (The Lonely Polygamist, Everything is Illuminated). Enjoy a lot of non-fiction - John Krakauer, Science, Philosophy, etc.

Honestly the backpacking out west is worth the trip. Idaho is a beautiful and cheap place to trek around.
