About Me

ABOUT ME

"You can only go home when you accept that home is a place you've never been." -Ursula K. LeGuin.
I can't say I live my life by this idea, but it definitely resonates with how I feel about traveling. I find it emotionally fulfilling to get to know the people I am around at anytime or any place, but I also enjoy my solitude. I take calculated risks, but I also know "sometimes you have to go out on a limb because that's where the fruit is." I love asking the unexpected question in a conversation, like "do you have a post-apocaliptic plan?" That's not to say I'm a "the world is ending" nut because I'm not, but I find people's responses to be very interesting. My friends say I'm quiet, but I don't see myself that way. I'll talk to just about anyone.

Interests

I love literature, and many of the books I've read have influenced how I choose to live life. A book titled "The Dispossessed" has furthered my understanding of how to care about other people as other inhabitors of the world. I'm fairly serious about my education, so a chunk of my time is spent researching, reading or writing. The challenging experiences, like figuring out where I want to live and exactly how to do that has been a perfectly difficult experience. I don't purposefully put myself in difficult situations, but we all know they just happen to us, and we have to have a plan b, c, and d. I think I like that part of life; even though it is difficult. I like to be out in the world, with or around people, seeing places that are a little removed from the rush of the city. That's not to say I dislike the city; I just could never life in one. I like to engage strangers in conversation and find out how they live their life or what they think of whats going on in this strange world. I'm majoring in Human Communications with an emphasis in Social Action and Creative Writing, but I have a child development certificate, so I also like talking to kids and engaging them in creative activities when I can.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I recently went on a four day backpacking trip, climbing up seven miles of trails and over two thousand feet of elevation. My friend and I reached a lake where we camped for two nights, and then hiked back down and went to another camping site. I will never forget swimming in that lake or the debilitating beauty of the mountains meeting the shore and the open sky above.
When I was working in an after school program in my hometown, I supervised an autistic boy. He didn't want to run laps with the other kids because he didn't see the value of the popsicle stick he was supposed to earn for every lap. A colleague of mine wanted him to sit on the bench during this time. I couldn't understand that. I talked to the boy about how it's important to exercise his legs and why I like to run and walk around in the grass. He just didn't see the point of the sticks, but he understood why it is important to exercise. I really liked that interaction.
The other day, I was walking around in a park, and someone was walking their dog; it pooped on the sidewalk and I saw they didn't have a bag. I said to them "really? you didn't see this coming?" I thought it was hilarious because they were really embarrassed and tried to brush it off. I think they were being irresponsible, but it also isn't a huge deal.
