I was born in 1987
In Johannesburg
It was an incredibly significant and violent year
But I learnt of that from textbooks and teachers
For some reason of psychology my mind remembers badly
Any great times of sadness
Thus most of the early years of my life are murky
I grew up with a black boy as my best friend and brother
Significant in my context
Insignificant in a general context
I experienced crime and poverty too early
But was not born into it
Lucky me
The mother city became my home
I spent the 1st 18 months with
My left arm encased with plaster of paris
I bear physical scars from that time
And emotional ones too
Bullying stays with you
Even if its effects fade over time
I went from introverted to extroverted
In the space of a year
I know now I am naturally outgoing
But had to recede into myself
To deal with my surrounds
I’ve collected other scars
Some have long healed
Others will always stay
I have loved dearly
And suffered a broken heart twice
I have stolen
And deceived
Westerford was 4 years of mostly happiness
I played waterpolo
A lot
I played for four years at UCT
My parents both moved away one far
The other ever further
My friends are my family
I still don’t have a degree
I am a chronic underachiever
At least that’s what they say
Now I take pictures
And I write this
And many other things
And I try and fight my inner demons
But man those fuckers are hard to beat.
