About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to explore the galaxy

ABOUT ME

i really love horizontally striped shirts. sure, they make you look big, but they also make you look awesome. i'm pretty fond of the color brown, but i'm not sure why. i don't eat meat because animals should have the opportunity to fully realize the nature of their existence, or something like that. i play video games and then write long-form essays about them. i'm working on a picture book, it's pretty awesome. i have a alter-ego, beef manjar, who rides on a space-moped (it's worth asking me about). yeah, i'm just an eccentric artist who has too much time on his hands.

PHILOSOPHY

I'm interested in culture and people. I love to hear people tell stories about their life. That's a major reason why I'm drawn to couch-surfing: the couch-owners and their tales. As a writer, there is no better way to find material than to experience true life with real people.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'd like to meet for lunch/coffee in Boone. I have a couch but... i lost it in my living room (it's a long story). Boone is a cool place and I know a couple secret hang-outs that make the little town even cooler.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I slept on a couch for an entire year once. I moved out of my parents house and crashed with some friends in Boone. They didn't have a room for me, so I just slept on the couch. Even today, with my fancy room with all my awesome stuff, I still long for those days on the couch and the freedom that it represented.

Interests

Postmodernism, picture books, chiptunes, pixels, Earthbound (MOTHER), skateboarding, outer space, sustainability, Star Wars, Japan, and climbing trees.

Music, Movies, and Books

Gondry or Godard. The Science of Sleep is probably my favorite movie of all time right now. I also really love everything that comes out of Studio Ghibli.

As far as music, the Beatles are my favorite band EVAR. More contemporary bands like the Unicorns, Flaming Lips, YMCK, and Weezer are pretty sweet too.

My favorite book is probably The Little Prince. Others include anything by Roald Dahl, Maurice Sendak, and Shel Silverstein. Yeah, I'm into kids books. I also like old school sci-fi and fantasy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I danced with the flaming lips in Chicago while wearing a frog suit. I've touched Natalie Portman (it's a long story) yes, I eventually washed my hand... eventually)). My life isn't really about huge, "amazing" feats though... it's more about staying under the radar and experiencing the simple pleasures that this planet has to offer.

Teach, Learn, Share

More than anything, I want to learn how to make video games. Not blockbuster titles with HYPERREALISTIC graphics, but stuff like the NES days with big fat pixels and bleep-bloop music. I want to make games that mean something. I've got tons of ideas, but I don't know a thing about how to make them show up on the screen.

I've had pretty good success with book recommending. It takes a few days of feeling the person out but eventually I can come up with a perfect book for them to read. I'm also pretty well versed in organic gardening techniques (my minor is in sustainable agriculture), so I can help give that thumb a green hue, if you're into that.
