About Me

Finding assignments that match my interests and skills.

Raised in a Chinese restaurant on Rte 66 in Amarillo, TX then lived in Wichita, KS. Went to Grinnell College in the 60's, sprouted long hair (gone now) and was a percussion designer for The Grateful Dead 76-91 (Mickey Hart). Ram Dass and Terence McKenna fan. Worked for the US Office of Education, have a 25 yr relationship with the Lakota Indians at Pine Ridge. . Currently live in a beach front condo in Chicago. Most years I get to Pine Ridge, the Ozarks, and Lake Powell.

PHILOSOPHY : "Do good and care not to whom." I begin relationships by listening.
Physics, not organized religion, is my preference. Community is the source of my happiness.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

By providing a place to stay in my condo on Lake Michigan beach in Chicago, a bed on my houseboat when I am at Lake Powell late August, or a camping spot on my lake land on Bull Shoals lake near Peel, Arkansas.

I have couch surfed in Çleveland,OH, Syracuse,NY and Hyannis,MA. I have hosted a number of people and have enjoyed them all. Much of my earlier years were spent on the road so I have stayed at friend's places over many years of traveling. By motorcycle or VW Bus it was a great time in my life and continues.

Great conversations and interesting people. I've traveled a lot in everything from a VW Bus to lots of commercial jets. I sing simple harmony and play about 12 chords on the guitar but not well. I love great food but barely drink. I am a super networker and can connect you to the very poor & disenfranchised as well as the famous and powerful. I canoe the Buffalo River(AR) almost every spring and houseboat Lake Powell every year. I ride a Harley Fatboy and a K100 BMW . I fly sailplanes, ultralights and gyros. Like my peer group I pretend to understand quantum mechanics and relativity...but really don't. I take long drives with audio books and ride the South Dakota badlands on horseback and sometimes get to dig for dinosaurs or bring the cattle in with my Lakota buddies. I participate in sweat lodges, I've been to Burning Man twice. I visit TED.COM regularly for inspiration and knowledge. DeadHead Intellectual.

Music, Movies, and Books

When I was 16 I walked innocently into a movie house to see Rod Steiger in The Pawnbroker and grew up in 2 hrs. Prefer indy and like foreign flims and documentaries.
The book, "Dune" taught me to love my mother, a great teacher. I have been blasting through audio books on my latest long drives:
Latest great read,"Shantaram."
Music...Miles Davis, The Grateful Dead, Layla, Blind Faith, Ry Cooder, Joni, Bill Evans, Carol King, Iris Dement, Satie's "Gymnopedies", Patricia Barber. Orff's "Carmina Burana." Oh Mio Babino Caro & Un Bel Di sung by Kiri te Kanawa. Ashokan Farewell by Jay Unger. Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy.
Favorite painter is Vermeer.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

-I spent two afternoons having coffee with Joni Mitchell in her kitchen...a true high point.
-16 years backstage with Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead...wow!
-I met DR. Martin Luther King when I was 19, inspirational.
-I learned from my early experiences with entheogens of the incredible capacity of the human mind to understand and create and how vast the territory is.

Teach, Learn, Share

I work with schools on SEL (social emotional learning) basically emotional intelligence. I teach Diffusion of Innovations theory. I know lots about benchmarking individual and group success and why groups fail or succeed. I've been a diversity trainer in the non-profit and corporate world for years. I can set the valves and timing on an old VW or boxer engine. I can teach you how to make marimbas and the types of percussion instruments I made for The Grateful Dead. I research longevity...if you want to make it beyond a 100,try resveratrol, metformin,& rapamycin. I did graduate studies in early childhood education. Certified in NLP, and Meyers Briggs. Four years of modern dance, first one on the dance floor...don't mind dancing by myself. My place is filled with musical instruments that I can barely play (guitar, bass, cello, congas, piano, flute..they're for you).

Great conversation and cooking skills. Knowledge random and specific (like neuro linguistics/autophagy and glycation).
