ABOUT ME

Hey everybody - so I live with my pareja in Brooklyn, NY. I'm interested in getting together to chat or go out and fill you in about things I've learned about the city. I currently teach ESL and work in a refugee employment program with people from all over the world.

PHILOSOPHY

Hmm.. personal philosophy? I guess I would say my philosophical jam is a mix of rationalistic and empirical tendencies (it's in my cultural blood) with a good helping of historical materialism to put things into perspective. I guess that sounds embarrassingly post-modern :/ I'm down with interculturality as well.

Interests

I'm down with cultural production and other stuff. I am trying to maintain a zen meditation practice, which has been a bit on-again off-again as of late. I'm interested in music and I'm trying to get a little musical thing together. I like walking in the city, playing chess with the old russian library masters, and having a few drinks. I need to buy a bicycle and pound the streets. Sometimes I just order delivery and eat inside. I'm dedicated to doing it and becoming a champion of everyday life. I love my wife.

MUSIC: Latin (boogaloo/salsa/son/cumbia/chicha/etc.), soul, 60s girl groups (shangri las, marvelettes, supremes), nina simone, caetano veloso, beny more, hector lavoe, otis redding, captain beefheart, 60s psychedelic music, babasonicos, punk (misfits, descendents, NOFX), willie colon, talking heads, piero, the sea and cake, juaneco y su combo, chain and the gang, etc. etc. etc.

BOOKS: I don't read enough (who does?) but lately I've enjoyed Junot Diaz, Alberto Fuguet, Julio Cortazar, just started reading a book by Toni Morrison.

TEACH: en ingles el adjetivo casi nunca viene antes del sustantivo que describe, salvo en la lengua poetica. What else can I tell you? Creo que ya sabias eso! Si tienes un bolsillo con apertura grande y decides guardar un libro adentro del bolsillo, hay que tener cuidado y estar pendiente porque a veces se te puede caer el libro sin que te des cuenta. Mas que una vez eso me ha pasado...
