Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I am relatively new to the CouchSurfing community, but not its philosophy. I find value in the trust, knowledge, experience, and resources I can offer others and they can offer me. The kinds of people who think similarly are usually authentic, genuine individuals -- the people I want to be associated with. So many of the characteristics that make CouchSurfing such a great community are innate in individuals that want a connection with other people, cultures, and experiences. I hope that I participate and offer some value to others in a similar way they have done for me.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I have hosted on Warm Showers before (a place for bicycle tourers to connect with folks who have a warm shower to bathe in and/or a place to sleep) and have met some absolutely incredibly inspiring people. While Warm Showers is a great resource, it is a bit of a niche community and I can only imagine what a vast community like CouchSurfing can offer.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
One time I was driving to visit a friend through this gorge. It was a tiny tiny two lane road with gorgeous red cliffs on either side and the sun was setting ahead of me, illuminating these rock faces red, orange, purple, darker, lighter. And then this song came on (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xWRi8O7gek) and I realized I was alone on that road and felt as though I owed someone something to be the one person to experience that moment.
The first time I visited San Francisco by myself I walked off the train into a thick fog. My friend I was staying with lived up by Golden Gate Park, so I began my walk with my iPod. The instrumental version of this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pRiolOmDaA) came on as I was ascending the SF hills. I stopped and watch the fog lift over the bay. Maybe some people think San Francisco is overrated or not the best city on the west coast or overpriced, but that moment helped me realize those people are wrong.
Perhaps the most amazing stroke of luck involves a 6 day bicycle tour on Lopez Island with my best friend. There's no way you stay there for 6 days with only 2 bikes, a sleeping bag, a crummy tent, a campstove, and one bowl and are greeting with nothing but sun. PNW friends know what I mean.
