Here are the basics:
I'm a friendly, rotund, sometimes audacious man.
I grew up in rural Nebraska, on a cattle ranch.
Since college, most of my jobs have been as an editor or writer.
In September 2010, I quit my job as an encyclopedia editor in Chicago after doing it for nearly 10 years. Then I went to Mexico City in mid-November, took a CELTA teacher training course, and worked as an English teacher from January to September 2011. Then I quit that job, left Mexico, and moved back to my home state of Nebraska in September 2011. I got an editing job in Lincoln in December 2011. But I got laid off from that job in January 2014, and had a rough winter and spring, emotionally and financially. Then I got a job at the newspaper in Sioux City, Iowa, and moved there in June 2014. I've been there ever since. In February 2015 I met my girlfriend, Tracey. We moved in together a year later.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
In Chicago in 2010, I went to several Chicago CouchCrash events and hosted one surfer. In Mexico City in 2011, I went to a few events and surfed with numerous CS hosts early in the year. In Lincoln in 2012 and 2013, I went to one CS event and hosted several surfers.
I like cottage cheese, nonfiction books and films, counterintuitive thinkers, alternative country music, guided tours, the Great Plains, encyclopedias and almanacs and atlases, the Internet, the Muppets, the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the radio show This American Life, and Pringles.
I dislike knee-jerk political partisanship, dishonesty, hot and humid weather, sweeping statements against an entire musical genre (such as "I hate rap"), meat with visible fat or gristle, inaccuracies in media, and cab and bus drivers who do a lot of sudden accelerating or braking.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
In no particular order, the impressive sightseeing trips of my life have been to southern Utah, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Quebec City, and Mexico's Monarch Butterfly Reserve.
