About Me

Second only to my gloriously neurotic boxer, Guinness, I love music and laughter and sunny Sunday mornings. There is so much of the world that I haven't seen, and I hope to lessen that quantity one spontaneous flight or road trip at a time. My fantasy basketball draft didn't go too hot, but I'm still optimistic about the season. I enjoy finding the best Ethiopian (and Thai!) restaurant a city has to offer, along with the most beautiful parks and hiking trails, zoos and botanical gardens. I always pull over to read historical markers. I love to cook for people, though in the interest of full disclosure, I am vegetarian (but I definitely do not proselytize!). Also, I know I'm one of the 7 people on the planet not on social media. My profile will never be complete... Sigh!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

There's nothing the road cannot heal. I hope. After quitting a job of 4 years and swiftly thereafter ending a relationship of 3 years, I just need a couple weeks away from my real life (or whatever it will become). It would be great to find some interesting people who can show me the best places, have the best conversations, and allow me to introduce them to the best music. The ideal road trip should be the perfect mixture of heartrending solitude and fascinating new people. Once I'm back on solid ground, I will most certainly open my home to others, and am grateful for such a great forum to help and connect with otherwise strangers. Hopefully this will lead to more trips in the future and making new friends passing through Austin,

Music, Movies, and Books

Music is my greatest source of joy in life, so this is a tough one. But, to be succinct, Jackson Browne is my end all and be all. Additionally, there is what I refer to as the Holy Trinity of Indie Music: Iron & Wine, Adam Arcuragi, Chris Bathgate. As well as the Holy Trinity of Scotsmen: Frightened Rabbit, Meursault, Admiral Fallow. And so much more.

Favorite movies include Ghost Dog, Once, Nothing to Lose, The Station Agent, Princess Bride, Big Trouble in Little China, Away We Go. Such an incomplete list.

Dave Eggers' Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is my favorite book and among my favorite authors, but Wendell Berry is more meaningful to me than words can express, as a writer and a human. Rabindranath Tagore, David Sedaris, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, so much brilliance and hilarity to enjoy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Secured a Tiny Desk Concert for one of my favorite bands and brought Bob Boilen and the NPR Music team a peach pie, which you can hear me talk about as the screen fades to black and credits roll, which is both supremely embarrassing and amazingly hilarious.

Teach, Learn, Share

Some of my favorite brutally fantastic jokes:

How do you make a duck sing?
Put him in the oven till his Bill Withers!

Hedgehogs. Why can't they share the hedge?

What does a nosy pepper do?
Gets jalapeno business.

My favorites will have to wait until we meet in person. How enticing.
