I am a highly sociable person with an appetite for life in general and travel in particular. I am generally in a great mood and normally walk around with a smile on my lips (though my friends would likely point out that I have been known to become hangry if I go for longer periods without foraging). I like to think the best of people until proven wrong. And like everyone here, I love meeting new friends.
I study whales for a living (and truly enjoy it). I recently moved to the States as a postdoc with the goal of figuring out how toothed whales living in smaller and larger groups structure themselves hierarchichally, including figuring out what animals get to make the big decisions (should we go find ourselves some big, juicy squid, or rather spend a few hours rolling around and having fun at the surface?). This career choice has the side benefit of getting me around to lots of exciting places in the world, both for conferences, networking, and fieldwork.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Standing at the top of Mount Sinai on a clear night, watching the most radiant display of stars atop my head, each of them more brilliant than the other, all of them convening on this night to share a grand cosmic fairytale.
Lying in the prow of one of our research vessels, a 200 year old, norwegian wooden ketch making its way slowly back to shore on a dark night, after a long day in the field. Ahead of us, 5 striped dolphins glide and leap through the most amazing spectacle of bioluminescence, each dolphin surrounded by a halo of bioluminescent lights, and all of them looking like an escort of ethereal ghosts following us along on our journey back to shore.
