One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

On a trip to the Galapagos I came across thousands of baby sea turtles hatching on a beautiful beach in the middle of the day - which is not when they are supposed to do that. The local birds rightfully treated the scene as an all you can eat buffet and devoured nearly every single baby turtle waddling down the shore, even the few that made it into the water. And because the park doesn't allow human interference there was nothing I could do but watch in horror. It was an important life lesson in the way nature works, made slightly better by a scuba diving experience years later in which I was surrounded on all sides by happy-seeming, fully grown sea turtles.
