About Me

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Well, it's a big bold world out there, with a lot of cool, interesting people. Hosting or staying with someone is a way to not just visit, but to experience what life is like in another country. And despite the fact that yes, the world is getting smaller, it's still amazing how different our cultures are, how different our environments are, how different our priorities are. As an architect, it's fascinating to see how we are products of our environments, our histories. The context in which we live greatly defines us: it borders our limitations and sets our goals.

So, couchsurfing is a great way to, I think, not just see a new place as a tourist, but to really experience a new place as a local.

And there are some great groups too, to meet people with common interests!

Interests

Ocean
Swimming
Surfing (although I am horrible at it)
High culture: fashion, architecture, interiors
Lowbrow: Street culture, surfer culture, underground music
Nudism!
The gym / working out

Music, Movies, and Books

I used to be a punk/new wave/alternative DJ in college.
But New York has influenced me: techno, house, classic disco. The stuff you hear in clubs, but danceable.

lately listening to:
Royksopp
Groove Armada
Fat Boy Slim
DJ Terrence Parker

Kate Bush
XTC
The Smiths

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My trip to Australia was great: got my scuba license in the Great Barrier Reef.

Been a DJ. Been a fashion designer.
Worked with world-class architects.

Perhaps the big one is: paying Manhattan rent!

Teach, Learn, Share

Languages:
As part of wanting to experience new cultures, I knew that speaking the language of that country was key. Not just to communicate, but to show that I want to be part of that country.
So I learned French, Italian, and Spanish. Grew up with Chinese; so speak like a baby in that language.
For an American, 4 foreign languages is a lot.

I think -- or I know -- that because I've literally spoken the language of the country I'm visiting, I've made the most amazing friends, lifelong friends. I've been able to transition in as not a foreigner within that country, and I'm really proud of that.

Looking back, I've accomplished a lot. It's because I've done everything myself -- computers and tech, cooking, construction (bricolage), fitness -- I'm able to speak to and to teach on many different levels over many different subjects. This includes all the fun stuff that's happening in New York.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, experiences, food. I'm a seasoned professional at this point in my career. From all my varied experience, I'm sure there's something!
Just having lived in New York for 30 years, I've got lots of stories!

Countries I’ve Visited

Australia, England, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Venezuela

Countries I’ve Lived In
