Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I did a home stay in a Jungle in Thailand. I had an amazing time - washed in a river, caught fish for my dinner and even tried eating cooked bugs.

The hosts were lovely too. They taught me a few words of Thai and their tribal language as well. They also taught me how to grind coffee beans in a pestle and mortar and made wonderful food.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It has been 5 years since I left England now, so I have had many amazing experiences and choosing only one is a bit difficult.
But I think it would have to be one of my experiences learning a different language.
At school I was taught French, but it all went in one ear and out the other and I could never make any sense of it.
It was not until I left England for Vietnam that I discovered the ability and joy of learning languages. The first time I spoke only in Vietnamese and was understood was amazing both for me and for my neighbors who couldn't speak English. I was now able to communicate with people and make friends with people I hadn't been able to before.

From learning Vietnamese I went on to learn Japanese at a school in Vietnam. I was the only westerner in the class so it was a bit strange at first. However I spoke to the other students in Vietnamese and made friends with all of them. Everyone in our class became really good friends with each other, and I forgot that I was foreign. Even the Japanese teacher would sometimes forget I was a foreigner. Learning was really fun, and we'd often hang out together after class.

That feeling of belonging and closeness makes this one of the most amazing experiences in my life.
