About Me

Like the Blues Brothers - I am on a mission from god ! I am just creating my profile - please be patient, I will be more specific soon !

I still have that insatiable urge to travel and to meet people. This fits in neatly with my other interests of history, music, literature, geography and inevitably politics. I love meeting people, getting to know them, see how they live, eat what they eat. We are all from the same human family, the slight variations are the spice of life.

If it had not been invented yet - we are only 6 degrees of separation apart ! As the world rotates, that is nothing. It should bring things into perspective. You can have very strong convictions of right or wrong. This can be applied to countries, to whole groups of people, but it should not be a hindrance to treat people from that same country and the same groups of people with courtesy and with respect. Differences should not inhibit personal relationships. People should always stay well above stereotypes and should be treated as individuals. Having said that, I must confess, I get along very well with people from the political left. Does it sound strange if I say at the same time, that I had some very stimulating discussions with people from the political right ?

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Before I was forced to settle down, I travelled extensively. Later on this became less frequent, but it has been a constant and most pleasurable experience. I am now retired and I have the freedom to be away for up to six months. I plan to make very good use of the time left to me.

Limited. I have experience there, when the concept of couch surfing was not born yet. I hitch hiked a lot when I was younger, starting in Europe and in the early 1970's I hitch hiked East Africa. People took me in, gave me food, let me sleep on any spare space. My repayment, my thank you was to send them postcards ( Yes, wed did that then ! ) from other places in the world, places they will never be able to see.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music : Folk music, music of the 60's and 70's, classical music, operetta. I declare myself ignorant of jazz and I am not keen at all on rap and hip hop.
Literature : I prefer non-fiction to fiction. Politics, travel literature and in fiction I concentrate on Graham Greene, John Steinbeck, V.S. Naipaul and an old favourite of mine - Kurt Vonnegut Jnr.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I wish I was younger, it would be so much easier... The older you get, the harder it becomes to pinpoint really important events. To get married and to have children, these are experiences we all have and that are dear to all of us, in their own way.
I had an unforgettable ride with the last taxi I took to Teheran airport in 2010. The driver was a gentleman of my age. We shared a lot of experiences, despite different cultures. It was a touching moment when he said, that we had so much fun in the 60's and 70's, but now, for him, it was all over. He was sad, that his children will not have the same fun and joy we had being young. His life was full and he had no regrets. He worried though for his daughters. He wanted the best for them but he knew that is a far off dream in Iran. He told me that because he liked and he trusted me and he knew I was on the way out.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have learnt, even if it took me the biggest part of my life, that listening to what people say, can be a very rewarding experience. To be able to listen, is an art in itself.
