ABOUT ME

Linguist, word nerd, seeker of lost voices. I'm a bit shy at first but do really like getting to know people. I spend most days rummaging around in dead people's notebooks recovering words and stories they wrote down. On better days I write down words and stories shared by speakers of uncommon languages. I really can't believe I get paid to do this. Oh, and I teach sometimes too.

PHILOSOPHY

Lighten up. Seriously. (I thought this was clever but it got 56,000 hits on Google. So sub-philosophy: Truly nothing new under the sun. Sub-sub-philosophy as counterpoint: Remember to marvel.)

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I was off this site for quite awhile but am traveling in the DC area this week for work so am interested in finding people to hang out with in the evenings.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I was in Peace Corps in a couple of countries where occupying other volunteers' couches was the preferred mode of travel. I also surf quite a bit of couch as part of my linguistic fieldwork. Enjoyed using this site when I was last on my own in a big city (a few years ago now).

音乐、电影和书籍

I enjoy most movies and a lot of music (usually at least 5-10 years behind the times on both fronts). Currently listening to the Be Good Tanyas and dorky old stuff from high school like Joy Division and Violent Femmes. I recently binge-watched the CW series "the 100" (or, as a friend put it, "Apocalypse 90210," which I hope doesn't make you hate me already.

Lived in a bamboo hut in the Solomon Islands for the better part of two years. During that time I ate mostly ramen noodles and Ma-Ling pork luncheon meat (very tasty when fried) - and lived to tell the tale.
