About Me

I am a geologist and palaeontologist, currently working as a geoscience software specialist for an exploration company. Before I had various jobs including working at a museum and on drilling rigs.

As (parts of) my job are also my passion, I do many things related to it also in my spare time. I like to visit museums, libraries, do field-trips or search for fossils. I enjoy being a member of the scientific community. Generally, while I am not too much a fan of sports, I really enjoy to be in nature and do outdoor activities.

I am always amazed about the wonders of nature and I enjoy travelling. If possible not on the beaten tracks. Generally, I am interested in any sort of knowledge and curiosity about the world, nature, culture....

By character I would consider myself a bit of shy but interested in other people and readily opening up if in a relaxed, openminded and welcoming company.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I recently came to Hamburg for a new job, but I know only a very few people around here. A friend of mine recommended me Couchsurfing as an ideal place to meet a variety of openminded people. So - here I am, let's see what comes!

On the long term, I will probably offer accomodation, however, for now I will become familiar with the community.

Interests

Aside of my genuine interest in geosciences, I am interested in almost all matters of natural sciences and technology, but also history, archaeology, biographies of interesting peoples, in politics, society and economics. There is hardly anything I am not responding to, at least to some degree.

More personal interests include photography, movies, design, computing, (a lot of) reading books, journals, and learning from the internet, sometimes editing wikipedia, science-fiction and fantasy, meeting nice and interesting peoples and have good talks and discussions, visiting museums, monuments, parks and zoos. I enjoy being outdoors, walking, being at the sea, the mountains or any sort of beautiful landscape.

If I just want to come down, I watch TV (mostly sitcoms or documentations, as I enjoy movies more in the cinema or from DVD) or -rarely- play computer games.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like music in general (with some exceptions like metal, techno, hiphop...) without any special taste... just depends on mood and feeling. Some deeper interest I have in film music.

Among fictional books I like especially those by Terry Prattchett and Douglas Adams, Tom Sharpe, but also those of J.R.R. Tolkien, and Stephen King, aside of many other. Genres include science-fiction, fantasy mostly with a satiric or comical touch, thrillers. As a guilty pleasure I enjoy comic books.

I love movies, first of all many 1970s-90s classics in science-fiction, adventures, and fantasy, as Star Wars, Indiana Jones series, Back to the Future, Life of Brian, Jurassic Park (of course! - but only the original book and the first movie), Lord of the Rings, Conan, Gladiator, Titanic, and many more. Generally, I have a broad interest in movie genres - from classics to experimental - but less in romantic comedies, and I cannot stand completely stupid and brain-less action-flicks without any coherent logic or story (consider this as a waste of time & money). The last film I truly enjoyed in cinema was Interstellar.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I dug for dinosaurs. And I was blessed to see one of nature's greatest wonders: The Grand Canyon.

Teach, Learn, Share

I noticed that -in average- I belong to the older members of this community and saw on many profiles that there are students and people in other stages of education and career-building. I made many experiences on my professional and academic history, some good, some bad, and I will be glad to share some advice, although I am always willing to learn new things from people with different perspectives.
