About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Well, at @ 50 years old, it's still under construction Seriously, I laugh at most everything, but a few things I take seriously: My creative self (poet & painter), animal rescue. Helping others.

ABOUT ME

I am single, native to Oklahoma: a poet, painter, and crafts person. Have worked in human relations fields for the last 19 years, 17 and a half of them with the State of Oklahoma.

I have one sister who is a Physician here in OKC, and one brother, now deceased. I help care for one elderly parent, who has her own residence. Am avid animal lover. Love travel. Have lived in several states: North Dakota, Kansas, California. Have visited many more: both Carolinas, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Iowa, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. Lived for three years in Misawa, Japan as a child; and have traveled to England and Mexico as an adult.

PHILOSOPHY

I firmly believe that it is our differences that most unite us and speak to our common humanity. Dignity and respect for all is not just pretty words to me -- they are the code I live by.

Other than that, I do believe that we are all artists -- seeking where we are destined to bloom. It took me a long time to appreciate that, and I have many friends who still argue this one with me. But I believe we are created precious, free, and with gifts no one but us can share with the world. I believe it is our responsibility to encourage each other to spread our wings and soar where we were meant to go. Does that mean I think everyone is a poet or a painter or potter? Of course not, but I have one friend who defines her "art" as being a good mother to her children, in part because she grew up with severely neglectful parents. Parenting is an AWESOME art form. So is creating a safe haven home for yourself and those you love, or being a computer guru, or a good engineer. Why not call these professions art?

Well, you get the idea. . . . .

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Happy to host, hope to be hosted at some future date.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None through this website so far, but have always preferred to stay with friends when visiting other places -- like Texas, and Greensboro, N.C. I have never had a bad experience couch surfing.

Interests

Well, I love meeting new people. I adore animals, wild and domestic. Grew up (partially) on a farm. I love riding horses, but don't do it often enough to be more than a novice. Love to swim and walk. I have been called a shop-aholic before. I adore CHOCOLATE. I like to bake, do needlepoint (or did in the past). I love to garden and "grow" things (plants of all kinds), but mostly I just watch them die despite my best efforts. I am an avid reader, often reading 3 or 4 books per week. I love to write poetry, read my own and others, and hear others read their works (or favorite authors). I have taught in and out of formal classrooms, but I love LEARNING. Anything you're passionate about, I will enjoy hearing about. I love anything and everything connected to oceans, sea, and the animals that live "below the surface". I am an environmentalist, and am interested in sustainability. I am also an avid OPUS fan (yes the comic strip). I try to be active in my local political party, but that comes and goes as I find ALL politics dis-illusioning, and I don't need to get any more cynical than I already am. No, I haven't mentioned my political or religious affiliations. Yes, I have them, but I am RABID about not FORCING my beliefs on others (or they on me). I love the free exchange of DIFFERENT ideas, provided the discourse remains civil. I promise NEVER to "preach" my beliefs to my guests, as long as they promise never to try to convert me to theirs. Now, if we are able to share positions, and explore otherwise controversial topics in a respectful manner, I am so there. My friends include republicans, democrats, independents, and libertarians. They also include almost every denomination of Christian (pentecostal, catholic, episcopalian, methodist, first christian, lutheran, unity, unitarian, and mennonite), muslim, buddhist, wickan, agnostic, and aethiest. I LOVE all my friends, even if I don't always LOVE all their ideas. But .....see personal philosophy below.

Music, Movies, and Books

Favorite Movies: Willow, Big Chill, Police Academy (1-6) Star Trek. Huge fan of Douglas Adams. Love all poetry, and most good literature; dabble in reading philosophy because it might be good for me, though it mostly puts me to sleep. Love a good story of any kind and in any medium. Love good fiction. Most of my music fits in alternative. I buy most of my CDs at Starbucks or The Blue Door (Darden Smith, Kate Chapman, Ray Wylie Hubbard). Love Janis Ian, especially the later stuff. Old rock; all Country, all blues and jazz and red dirt music -- favorite group: Dave Carter and Tracy Chapman.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Saw the May 3, 1999, OKC, OK F-5 tornado. Had an original play produced; and am blessed with folks who continue to encourage me to read my works.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm good at poetry and play at painting. I also make memorial stones for beloved pet companions. I am a certified mediator and currently assist employees and clients with grievances.

Things I'd like to learn: how to paint better; pottery; more about oceans; palentology, and geology.
