About Me

I recently retired from teaching marine science in a public school in Fort Lauderdale FL. I plan on traveling to cooler areas in July and August and spending winters in FL. I love meeting new people and traveling to new places. This summer on my "2015 Beat the Heat Tour" I have driven from FL to Denver and will be heading toward Wyoming and across the top tier of the US. I also flew to Portland and spent 10 days with friends in Eugene OR and back to Denver.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I am couchsurfing to meet new people and experience new places. And must confess that I cannot afford to spend extended periods in hotels. I will be camping and hopefully catching a couch or two along the way.

Interests

I am an avid scuba diver and fisherman down in FL. I also am a USCG Master Captain and have logged more than 50,000 miles at sea - primarily on sailboats.

Another interest is gardening -vegetable,herb and have many varieties of tropical fruit trees in my yard. And a follow up of having access to fresh veggies, fruits and seafood is that I love to cook. Of course the natural progression from there would be a good bottle of wine to complement the meal.

Music, Movies, and Books

I have been somewhat stagnant in my music listening - a bit stuck in the 60's, but have been expanding my genres through Satellite and Pandora.

Movies, well that is a hard one to pin down. I have watched from A to Z at home being a subscriber to Netflix. I like some of each category. Some examples might be: action - Jason Bourne , western - Unforgiven. Do not watch Sci Fi and have more of a tendency toward nonfiction take offs.

Books - In my career as a teacher I mostly read research related to marine and atmospheric science. A couple of periodicals that I enjoy are Nat'l Geo, Scientific American, Organic Gardening and the daily newspaper. This coupled with the countless hours of grading papers did not leave much time for novels. Now that I am retired nonfiction novels are on my horizon. Presently reading "Cadillac Desert" about the history of water and water rights in the West.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Captained a sailboat for 20 years (summers only) to very remote areas of the Bahamas.

Did a two month jeep trip from Mexico all the way to Panama.

Teach, Learn, Share
