About Me

To explore the world

I am a student of French, Portuguese, and Arabic. I also hope to study Russian in the near future. I work with French and English students at Grand Rapids Community College, and also at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport as a gift shop attendant and interpreter.

I am transferring to University of Michigan for baccalaureate studies in the fall, and hope to eventually work in academia, doing something... interesting.

My interests provide a good example of the sort of person I am; I'm rather shy, but curious in many things.

I collect old cameras, old records, books in many languages.

I volunteer at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts whenever I find the time.

I make my life meaningful to myself through my choices and experiences. It is for this reason that I love to travel and to study.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I have only surfed so far, but it was a great experience and I hope to host other travelers in the near future.

film photography, libraries, travel, classic world literature, history, art, book swapping, atheism, veganism, feminism, political science.

Music, Movies, and Books

Withnail and I, Elevator to the Gallows, Pierrot le fou, I Am Curious Yellow, The Dreamers, Aguirre Wrath of God; and anything featuring Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, or Jeanne Moreau.

Tom Waits, Pulp, The Kinks, Édith Piaf, The Velvet Underground, Dr. Dog, Frontier Ruckus, Breathe Owl Breathe, Johnny Flynn, Os Mutantes, Billy Childish. These are just a few of my favourites; I appreciate most genres of music.

Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky), Nausea (Sartre), The Count of Monte-Cristo (Dumas), Doctor Zhivago (Pasternak), Near to the Wild Heart (Lispector). And so many more. I also enjoy nonfiction works about history, language, and feminism.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Driving all night to Washington, DC, for the Reason Rally, and wandering around at 3am trying to find the Lincoln Memorial.

Taking shelter from rain beneath Roman ruins outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Teaching my travelmates the fine art of calimochos, on a rooftop in Arles.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have very much enjoyed my experiences of tutoring French and English, and would gladly offer that to the couchsurfing community.

I'm passionate about languages and would love to practice with native speakers, or learn vocabulary from languages I haven't studied in-depth yet.
