About Me

To restrain the pillow. To acquire freedom for something, not from something.

If I was a lizard, how could you know who I am without my telling you about the desert? I grew up in the middle of Illinois through high school, then went to a small Indiana town for college. I decided to get a completely different experience and move to Chicago for medical school. Now I'm somewhere in between doing a pediatrics residency in Cleveland.

But you're wanting to know how I compare to other lizards? I've been told by some that I'm hilarious, others that I'm a warm person, and by default, others haven't said anything. Looking for someone to tell me I'm rugged and fierce so I can put that here, too, and make me sound really multidimensional.

You can't deny the mind and body influence each other. Running is cool, but depending on when you read this I may or may not be in shape, ha. I dig yoga and meditation, too, but haven't done either in a while.

Polar thinking. Recognize that contrast is everywhere.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies I like include Batman Begins, Home (2009; I'll watch it over and over so likely will see if you wanna watch it), The Smash Brothers (fan-made video game documentary), Samsara, The Matrix, Room, Short Term 12, The Big Short, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Schindler's List, A Bug's Life, The Human Condition... Ich Klage An is a dishonorable film but well worth your time if you can find it with English subtitles (or if you know German). PBS Frontline documentaries are also generally excellent.

Music artists I like include Tool, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, The Doors, Tosca, Gorrilaz, Michael Jackson, and of course... THE CAT EMPIRE. Not an all-inclusive list, and open to most other musics. I especially like jazz as a music genre.

Some of my favorite books are Walden, Book of Five Rings, Catch-22, Anatomy of an Epidemic, V for Vendetta, and Watchmen. Right now I'm trying to learn Spanish and Portuguese so I have started reading Cien Años de Soledad and O Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma. I haven't read more than a couple chapters of Muhammed Yunus' Banker to the Poor, but I love the idea that a small bank dedicated to enabling the poorest ballooned to serving millions of poor women in Bangladesh. I really think it speaks to the spirit from which CouchSurfing was borne.

I like poetry, too; I've got a few anthologies in my small library.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I performed my first surgery in June 2013: a testicularectomy. So I basically castrated a goat while I was volunteering on a farm in Colorado.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can give you a basic intro to meditation, although if you have any experience with it you may know more than me, ha. I think whistling can give you happiness whenever you want, so if you tell me you can't whistle we'll have to fix that immediately. Always happen to learn anything that helps me understand your world a little better. And of course, I'll share my space and time with you.

Oh yeah, I guess I know a thing or two about medicine :P
